I'm predicting an Al Faux-John Sharper cosmic reentry. He must be stoked!

Former AFA recruit? They tend to shoot fairly well.

Former AFA recruit? They tend to shoot fairly well. The military is full of "shooters". I like this idea of bringing in another "Aqeel Quinn" to shore up the point guard depth and help with perimeter shooting. Oldie Out

Is the coaching staff saying they are not going to be recruiting a SG or SF in the 2016 class ?

We have a history with walk-on's named Ben. OK, ONE, but a popular one.

He did well at the Adidas Nations AAU Tourney in LV with Dream Vision (same team as Brendan Bailey) and generated interest from schools like Iona, Florida Gulf Coast, Portland and Rhode Island. Those are D-1 level schools. If he can shoot from the perimeter, he is a "good get." Another Shrigs or Rahon...

Maybe scheduling St. Katherine wasn't a total waste of time.

Within a few weeks the staff was able to address the roster hole created by Shrigley's injury. Great job.
His video shows an athletic 2 guard, think more athletic than Dakarai, but a little less meat on the bone. It looks like he can shoot. So if he can hold up, guarding other 2s, then he could get minutes this year.

He is basically injury insurance.
ESPN writes: Perez has a wiry frame with good length, solid athleticism, and much room for growth. He is a natural scorer, who can knock down 3s and he shows signs of a solid mid-range game as well. His pull-up is consistent off the dribble (in transition)
If his "good athleticism" allows him to not be a weak link on defense, the Aztecs can work him in if they need a scoring punch. If he finds minutes not due to injury it means the other guards the Aztecs were hoping to be ready aren't so ready, and neither are the Aztecs.

We have plenty of openings, and he's a walk-on. 2016-2017 roster: Williams, Allen, Kell, Hemsley, Shrigley, Nolan, Max, Z, and Pope/or not. That leaves 4 or more likely 5 roster spots assuming no one else leaves. Aztecs will be adding all types of players.

That write up is 17 months old before spending one year at rhe AFA Prep school. His video from this summer shows that he is likley more than insurance. My guess is that this has been on hold waiting for NN. If he had stayed in HS then we would have given Ben the scholarship instead. A little gravy in that he played with Bailey.

This is basically someone to fit into that 10th spot, which is insurance in case of foul trouble & injury situations which happen in a 30-game schedule. He & U'u could battle it out as extra insurance.
Still hoping Shrigs can get back in mid-February, but if not we're in a little better shape. Never know, he could earn a scholarship for next year.
Our Scout team is going to be very good - Norain, Max, Perez, U'U, Federico, allowing Shelton to rest those knees a little more.

We still have an open scholarship, even with Norain coming. If he was scholarship worthy I'd think they'd have offered him one.
Hopefully he surprises & we end up going 10-deep this year (or he displaces Williams for that 9th spot)!
