He has been the number 1 rated recruit for the last two years . We have contacted him . Are we on his real list hard to say , he has mentioned SDSU . Want any chance to sign him , we will need a strong run in MM , at the very least SW16 or E8 , this year .

There's at least 10 threads about or focused Ayton going back 2 years, plenty of discussion past, present and future.

We're a mention, by default. Being the hometown team.
I'm not sure, we're big league enough for the kid. But I can always hope.

Oldie Out If you're playing the odds I agree with you, but every kid is different. Could say the same thing about Cal & Rabb, but he placed MAJOR value in playing close to home & being the guy to raise their profile.
We could get lucky & he's that type of player, but so far I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe that unfortunately. With Rabb he always placed a premium on the hometown angle, even before Conzo got there.

Not sure if Rabb actually grew up in Norcal or not (I suspect he did)... but Ayton grew up in the Bahamas for his younger childhood and moved out to San Diego only a few years ago correct? If that's the case I don't see him having many ties to SDSU

Plus, he's living with a former Aztec player, Zach Jones. Proximity can be a huge tool in recruiting, as he can attend games & even take "unofficials" to practices at the JAM center, etc. Our coaches will be able to easily attend his games & build relationships over the next couple years, whereas many others will have a much tougher time hitting a weekday and/or Saturday night game.
So a few things playing in our favor, hopefully.
Never say never....

The Irony is that if he would stay home @ SDSU, close to friends, his BB coaches, beautiful city he hopefully has grown to love, He'd lead us to the final 4! We are already good enough for him to take us to the promise land, he's going straight to the NBA after 1 year anyway! Why not?

Exactly, which is what Rabb wanted to do. He's a 1 & done talent, but instead of going to UA or even Kentucky which he could easily have done he wanted to LEAD Cal to the promised land. Not go to a program with a recent history & ride their coattails.
Heck, just get one of his stud AAU teammates to come with and/or Hands & add to whatever talent remains from the '14, '15 & '16 classes & we'll be looking VERY good.
But it takes a special kid with that goal/mindset....

will be very important for the Aztecs to do very well in MM this year for him to consider SDSU . Could also help if the Aztecs are able to get some additional quality recruits in the 2016 class and get the momentum rolling for highly rated recruits to consider SDSU . Rabb is from the No Cal area and do not forget CAL is a P5 school playing in the PAC , a conference that has been getting schools in the SW16 or better . Aztecs still play in the MW and when was the last time a MW school got to E8 ? I hope , he , McCoy or Hands do consider SDSU and we are able to land some local talent , since we always seem to be considered but forgotten when the top 20 local talent make their selection.

Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll decide to stay in SD for one more year. Thats's what Mudiay was going to do with SMU and Dallas before he decided to go to China instead.

He is rated the #1 recruit for 2017 , will be looking for a school that can prep him for the NBA . Good training for a center . Good competition in OOC and conference play . Make a good solid run in MM. In reality he can pick any school he wants . The NBA needs quality 7 ft players . So if we want a chance, we need to show we are close to SW 16, and with him , E8 or F4 . Talent around him but need him to get us to the next level . That is why how we do this year , plus guys we recruit for next year are important .

Now having J. Hands as his PG they should have a very good team . Ayton keeping his #1 ratings and Hands going up the ratings chart .

I'm not totally sure but I don't think Zach Jones is a big SDSU guy. When he coached at Horizon he had 2 big time players in his tenure Jared Dudley and Jeff Withey and they both landed elsewhere, I don't think Withey ever even gave us a sniff.

It's crazy how many top-tier bigs we have coming out of SD in the next two years.
Okay, so there are only three, but aside from Ayton being the consensus #1 recruit of '17, McCoy is #17 in '17, and TJ is #11 for '16. When's the last time we had three top-20 bigs come out of SD all within a year of each other?
If there was just one in play, I wouldn't think twice about it, but considering we're going after all three, I wouldn't be surprised if we land one of them.

The basketball program was completely different then as well. Dudley committed in around '02 I believe, Fisher's first decent year & first NCAA bid I believe. When Withey committed, which was around '08, we were still a NIT type team. Would be tough for a HS coach to steer top tier athletes to a mid-tier, non-P5 school. Very different formula now. Don't know what Joneses relationship with the program is today, but SDSU is no longer a stretch to land 4-5 star talent, and it wouldn't be a stretch for him to encourage the relationship if it's relatively positive.

I hope , he , McCoy or Hands do consider SDSU and we are able to land some local talent , since we always seem to be considered but forgotten when the top 20 local talent make their selection. I am so tired of hearing about how important it is for the Aztecs to have a great season in order to recruit a top 20 player. If a local player wants to stay in San Diego and believes he can be the difference in reaching a final 4, why not stay home. It would mean a lot more to the Aztecs to get a top 20 high school player than it would to Kentucky, Arizona or even Cal. Too many people here seem to think we cannot compete against many schools when it comes to recruiting. With our arena and JAM center, our facilities are better than almost all teams in the PAC12. Our fan base is also one of the best in the nation.
If a player see's himself as a "one-and-done", then why not play in front of family and friends for that 1 year? It only takes 1 or 2 great players to lead a team in March. If I were Leaf or Ayton, I would have already committed to the Aztecs. But these guys are being pulled in so many directions they don't know what end is up. We have seen the success Gonzaga, Butler and Wichita State have had recruiting players. Is it really that hard to see the Aztecs doing the same? For a team that has been consistently good over the years, without a top recruit, it seems logical that a top 20 player from San Diego could imagine being the guy that takes the team over the hump. Note: Leonard was ranked #56 by ESPN in 2009.
