The UT article says Zabo has not decided where to go just yet (Hawaii is an option but even farther from Canada). Is it possible for a school to take back a player who has left the team? Suppose Zabo wants back and Fish wants him back... can Zabo just return and take a scholarship? Or are there NCAA rules saying no. Not that he's coming back or that I have any insider info...just curious about the possibility of any player changing their mind and going back.

From research I did years ago I think the option to return is absolutely open, however, rules may have changed. Now, just because the option is open doesn't mean the player or the coach would be interested.

I'd gladly take him back given recent circumstances, but it would be seen as a bit of a desperation move on both Zabo's and Fisher's part. Therefore, extremely unlikely. But I'd rather have Lonnie Jackson somehow pried away from Boise.

As the article says what Zabo needs is an opportunity to play this year to get back his confidence be it JUCO or come back to SDSU if the staff sees that he will get the PT now ,or transfer and sit a year , or to a lower level school and going . But that means Williams would be ?? Zabo can play both guard positions . IMO either Zabo or Williams should have red shirted last year once the decision was made to have Kell move to PG - a move that did not work out well in my opinion . Bottom line we had too many players- especially guards- to keep them all happy so Zabo left . Plus our guard play was below average. Wish him the best , where ever he lands.

Bottom line we had too many players- especially guards- to keep them all happy so Zabo left . Plus our guard play was below average. Wish him the best , where ever he lands. If Zabo would have RS'd how would that have made him happier? He'd be even further behind this year with zero game experience and nothing to benchmark against, and he'd still have the SAME players in front of him. RS'ing him would have done him NO good, and in fact would have been worse. When transferring to another D1 team he'd have had to RS back to back years, meaning ZERO PT for 2 straight years (or transfer down/go JC). Plus, JH was still coming to the Mesa - it's not like he couldn't see the writing on the wall, and his chances of getting significant PT would still be a couple years away at best.
Often the reason kids do not redshirt is they want to keep their RS year available in case they do transfer, even if that means getting little PT as a freshman. A little PT is much better than none & being off the floor for 2 years.
Also, keep in mind he was hampered by an injury, I believe early in the year after Hawaii, which pushed him further back. That's not something you anticipate. And it's not like he didn't play - he was averaging 15 minutes a game over the first 8-9 games, so he was given ample opportunity to win a position. If he wasn't going to be given a shot I could see potentially RS'ing him, but that wasn't the case. Had he not played those minutes the staff wouldn't have had an idea as to where his game strengths/weaknesses are, nor would he. It's unfortunate he got squeezed out, but it's part of the game.
As it is, he has some college ball experience including playing against UA, Utah, BYU, Pitt, UW, etc., and if he goes JC route he can play 1 year & still be a 3 for 2 when he transfers; or he can transfer & is a 4 for 3. He has a LOT of options AND experience at the highest level. Nothing wrong with that.

believe Zabo was the first of the 4 freshman to sign last year . Recruited to be PG . Kell signed later. Then during Fall early fall practice Kell who was recruited as SG was moved to PG . So that meant Aztecs had Kell , Zabo , AQ , Williams all at PG . SG had Polee , Shrigley , with some Shepard , AQ , Kell ... Definite overload of guards. Aztecs also signed JH to come in and play PG in November. So not sure how it was going to work out other then some guys were not going to get PT and some one was going to transfer out . As it turned out it was Zabo . Once the decision to move Kell to PG think it meant some PG would move on. Hard to keep 12 or 13 scholarship guys happy with PT . We do not know if Zabo had not been injured if he would have gotten the PT later ? I think he has talent but the only opinion that matters is the coaches. Did the one year of playing at SDSU help Zabo , does not seem to have impressed other major colleges , not many offers. If he gets in to a major college he sits then has three to play after transfer sit year. Go to JUCO , get back his confidence, get offer with 2 years to play ? Was he or Williams asked to red shirt ? do not know . Is Zabo a talent for a major college , we do not know . Only time will tell . Was he just a guy that just had better talent on the team so moved on or should he have stayed to try this year ?
If the red shirt is so wrong why is Nolan Narain thinking about doing it ?

He's younger, and is much further from maturing into his body than Zabo. It's more common to RS bigs than guards or wings.
Flip the coin - what if Zabo RS'd last year but tore up his knee like Shrigs & didn't have a year to use for a another RS? How would that have helped him? Or what if he gets injured at ANY point in his career early in the season (or before)?
Every player who comes to any university knows there's a chance they won't get PT and/or they'll fall further behind the curve with new recruits. When Zabo committed he didn't know JH was going to be in the wings. Things change.
It happens. It's NORMAL at college programs. Transfers are commonplace - around 1 in 3. Because FR are more apt to play right away these days kids put more of a premium on getting immediate PT rather than waiting their turn on the bench. Plus, coaching turnover is more frequent so having flexibility is a good thing these days. Because there's a chance they'll transfer down the road most don't want to RS away their FR year. Not if there is ANY chance they can make the rotation. Zabo had a chance to make the rotation. Hindsight is 20-20; you don't have that luxury in November.
AQ & Williams both missed time with injuries - we were going to need Kevin ready just in case, which means early season PT. He got it - plenty of it.
BTW, how would NOT playing have improved Zabo's perception among other programs? I'd bet Zabo's had opportunities to go to several programs but just hasn't found the right fit.

I don't know the procedure, for sure. But I think that if he's in good standing with the school academically and he hasn't signed anywhere else or done anything official there would be the possibility of him coming back. But we don't really know what happened behind closed doors, what was said, what lead to the decision to leave, etc. And he's 18-19 years old... a lot could have been said privately that could make coming back. Certainly, not as simple as a mea culpa and showing up again.
All the best to him. He seems like a really nice young man and no one faults him for wanting to play more elsewhere.
