The energy and excitement was palpable in these games. So different now. Shameful, that we failed to expand on Marshall's brilliance. The "afterglow" when he left, evaporated quickly. Instead of capitalizing, we sank. What a waste.

The energy and excitement was palpable in these games. So different now. Shameful, that we failed to expand on Marshall's brilliance. The "afterglow" when he left, evaporated quickly. Instead of capitalizing, we sank. What a waste. The opening 3 games to start the 1992 football season I believe were probably the most difficult games we have had in Div. 1 football. Opened against U$C, and then BYU, and UCLA. We had to play two of the three games on the road. Most college football experts probably figured we would go 0-3 to start the season with a schedule like that. But, even with an opening like that we finished 1-1-1, and with a little more luck we might have gone 2-1. UCLA was the only ranked team (11th) when we faced them, and we got blown out by them, but we played very well against the Trojans, and the Cougars. Even though we had Faulk & Scott our defense was just not strong enough, and we may have bitten off more than we could chew that year. If, we had beaten the Trojans we would like I said be 2-1, not bad at all. Our scheduling that year was overboard, because we ended the season with No.1 ranked Miami, and even with Faulk at home they were too much for us to compete with. Some good points though is that the win at Provo was our very first over BYU at their home stadium. Faulk ran wild over the 'Cougs! And, Faulk & Scott also helped bring the Aztecs back to life in the second half vs. U$C at Murphy's Stadium (the Q) as it was then called.

I was bored and hungry to watch football so watched the entire USC game from start to finish. What a game. The worst part was the dropped open pass that would have given our kicker a way better chance to redeem himself in the final seconds. I blame that drop more than the kicker.
Also, Marshall was a beast!!! I wish Lowry threw to him more though.

I have to respectfully disagree MOW from the standpoint that Luginbill's record during Marshall's tenure was 22-14-2, and one bowl loss(OK). But when the team went 6-6 in year three and Luginbill was on the carpet, Marshall claimed if Lugie was let go he would bolt for the NFL. (Personally, I didn't believe that. Whether he stayed or left, I believed Marshall was gone like a fart in the wind). And they both were after '93. Granted, this was a relative bright period surrounding by decades of dismal Aztec football following the '70's, but it was a pretty ugly ending, IMO. (And as much as I enjoyed watching Marshall, I still give 80's QB Todd Santos
the "gutsiest Aztec ever" award, but I digress).
Following their departures, the decision was made to hire USC reject Ted Tollner who, at State, produced three winning seasons surrounded by five miserable seasons and, again, one bowl loss. So no, the program never had a chance after Faulk's departure.
And while I'm amused by the tongue-n-cheek apology by some on the board, the decisions made by those paid to think is the reason Aztec football is where it is. But emotions aside, that is just an empirical fact.
We'll see what 2015 brings. Actually, maybe I totally agree with you after all...

We'll see what 2015 brings. Actually, maybe I totally agree with you after all... Whoa! Realized I punched in the wrong numbers, (that's what wine will do), Lugi's record during Faulk's tenure was 19-15-2, (right or wrong, no doubt, one of the reasons he was passed over for the Heisman). Too much emphasis placed on history perhaps, but the past is the present and until proven otherwise, the present is the future. RLong, to this point, like Lugi, has a winning overall record. But like Lugi, to this point, he has failed to double down on games that could have brought the program some notoriety. Just one big long continuum. But, as always new seasons bring hope and optimism, (a least for some). This will be RLong's fifth season. Something's gotta give, one way or the other.
