It may have been pointed out before but Matt is now #20 ( JJ's number)
in basics IMO D.Allen is a good defender , was better then our other guards last year Shrigley , Kell , AQ , DW . the only guard that may have been quicker was Polee. So yes he had to guard the other teams best guard , he does play D , so he does pick up fouls , trying to learn the transition of not "hand checking " on defense has not always been easy, so he does pick up fouls .He is not a 3 point shooting player but can take it to the basket, defend and rebound better then Shrigley , Kell or DW .

He's definitely not slow, he just can't shoot. I never said he was "slow," I said he was a "step slow at the guard position," which I think he is and most would agree with me. He's got plenty of length and can alter shots on D, but I don't see him keeping up with PGs or SGs at the D1 level. That's not a bad thing...like I said, we can and do utilize his length well. Fisher knows how to get the most out of guys like Allen (although I wish he'd turn him lose on offense and let him shoot more). Yeah I thoroughly disagree with you. Defensively I think he's very quick, quicker than just about any guard we have. Offensively I think he's quick too but because he knows he's limited with what he can do with the ball we rarely see him take anybody off the dribble. Most buckets are smart slashes toward the basket.

On the offensive side of the ball, I'd love to see Fish turn him loose...I know he's much better than a 3rd-down, nickel package defensive substitution that we kind of use him for now. Maybe we'll need his offense a bit more this season with Shrigley going down. Of course, we now have probably 3 legit scoring threats in Pope, Kell, and Cheatham, but it would be nice to see him contribute.

He is an excellent defender although he is prone to foul trouble. I agree that if he played more minutes (which he probably will this year) he will probably learn to foul less and may be more comfortable in the offense.
We may also see some instant offense from the new walk on Ben Perez.

Second, we HOPE Cheatham is a "legit" scoring threat but until he actually plays a collegiate game.... Definitely will bring energy - that we do know.
We should also see more scoring from our 5's this year.

If JH is the real deal at PG that could help every player on the team . Basic message to all move when you do not have the ball and be ready for it when it comes to you . Adjust the offense . From slow down ball screen half court to - Attack the basket as soon as we grab a rebound and get into transition quickly . Should benefit guys ,that like to go to the basket . Could be perfect for D. Allen . Chol should be a reserve for Spencer . That down low combo at the 5 position could go from 8 points a game to 15 ( plus 7 for the team). Cheatham reserve at either forward , Allen at SF or SG as needed ( but let him do what he does well going to the basket , do not expect him to be a three point shooter ). Williams back to JH . Plus U or current walk on at SG ,if needed .
We have the controlled scrimmage , X game , then ILL State and very important be prepared for game at Utah ( ESPN ) 11/16

True, I did forget Shep, my bad. I'm hoping for continued consistency in his game. I'd be ecstatic if he averaged 13/8 per game this season. As far as Cheatham, that's why I said "probably" .

Hearing that Shrig is expecting, hoping for a January return. That would be awesome. Healing is going well.

Good news update from Heidi Krim Shrigley:
"Matt is doing great, rehab started immediately after surgery and has been going strong. He seems to be way ahead of schedule! Of course he is getting the best of the best at SDSU."

The big issue will be conditioning and the lack of practice time for him.
