Warms my aztecfan cockles that you boys took an interest in this preseason thread. By the way Chapman reportedly now is up to 200 and Horton loves the kid. I think we can agree that our QB fortunes are on the rise.

To be fair. I'm not saying J Rod won't be good, or overtake Chapman at some point. Chapman's simply outperforming him right now. That's it. And I am sticking with maybe. Ohhh. Apparently he's at 200 lb's now. Is he considered a starter by you now? Hey, I also hear he's performing like a 4 star QB. Does that put him in starter category now for you? Ha!!!!

Waiting for the best of 3 QB's is much better than hoping a QB suddenly plays better than the prior season. We are in a much better situation than last year.

I still have J-Rod at #2 Regardless.I have watched Chapmans high school videos and spring practice and I am not sold also because his stats also he is a redshirt freshman. What I figure is it is a ploy to hype up the competition before the coaches decide who the starter and second string actually are going to be. No. J Rod is playing like the #3 QB right now. That's why he's there. From reading this board months ago I got the impression that Rodriguez was so good that he would automatically waltz into the #1 spot. So, what happened?

I think he is ajusting to the different recievers.Looking at film he has a excellent arm and accuracy is not bad.

Hopefully JR will be used as a changeup QB with a heavy running aspect.

At this point, Chapman is simply outperforming him. That can change at anytime. Rodriguez has alot of potential, but you have to do it on the field. He has to get more accurate.

All three are better than what we had the last two seasons. I thought J-Rod would be the top dog last year when I bought into the hype. Smith earned the job. It's his. He's had success in the SEC. He gives the Aztecs the best shot at winning the MWC.

That was before they got a close look at Rodrigues (with an S) and realized they could do better and Smith appeared. This board only knows what people on the board are saying for the most part. You can bet that Jeff Horton is very high on Chapman who definitely is the heir apparent for 2016 and beyond.

Not sure what happened with JR.....Maybe the new coaches weren't impressed with his laid back style?...maybe he thought he would just waltz in and have the job?....maybe he didn't expect to be in this competitive environment?...maybe he was nursing an injury?....it's a mystery at this point, but I expect him to make a serious run at starting by end of camp.

He may make a run but it's Smith's job to lose. I watched in the spring and Rod was clearly 3rd. Smith has a confidence about him that impresses.

"Of Smith in spring camp, Long said, “He seemed unflappable. He seemed confident in the pocket.” The coach also lauded Smith’s accuracy, something which was a problem for Rodrigues, who will have to improve in that facet to stay in the QB competition. Long said he believes Chapman has the biggest upside because of his chance to be a starter for three years if he progresses this season." www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2015/jul/29/mountain-west-quarterbacks-new/Oldie Out

I'm very pleased with the quotes about Smith & Chapman... Glad we seem to have 3 (2.5?) good options to compete against each other, instead of "hoping somebody steps up" like we've had in other summers.

I as at the Spring game also . . Most passes were short ones to TE's . No runs by the QB's other then to escape the rush , as OL got beat numerous times. Thought the 1 long ball that was complete to a WR was by JR. Sat with parents of the OL . They told me that the full offense had not even been put in. So many battles for starter positions would come in the fall, Running Pro -style with Spread options. Expected that to happen at the start of Fall Practice . Can some who may know , do the players have practices after spring game and during the summer, other then volunteer work outs with Coach Hall ? After Spring Ball Smith was #1 but Rocky said then and again at Media time , the battle for starter really takes place when Fall practice starts , is it August 6 ?

Turnovers will get you killed. Tough to win when you're on the wrong side of that margin. Inaccurate QB's are going to throw more int's. It's pretty simple. Let the guys fight it out and let the best man win. It shouldn't matter whether he's a senior or a RS frosh.

Believe Horton has said the offense will be Pro Style but with Spread Options . Passing - use the TE's more . Also get the ball to DP , Penny, WR's ..... in the open field and let them make plays . Let the skill players turn short plays into long gainers .
Yes do see that both Toledo and Sipe are gone . Do hope that we now have coaches that are going to take responsibility for recruiting the QB's and developing them , take ownership . Stop passing the buck . Horton also was the coach who recruited QB Agnew for 2015 class .

Players have voluntary (read-mandatory) strength and conditioning sessions 5 days a week(running and weight training) after Spring Game all summer (with one week break between summer school sessions 1 &2, and one week break prior to Fall Camp (Aug. 5). Incoming freshman/transfers join in at start of session 2 of summer school.

So the three QB's have been doing strength and conditioning all summer . No Practices . Come back August 5 , start putting in the true offense . When they finished the Spring Game, Smith, Chapman , JR in the mix for the starter in that order . Fall practices deciding who ends up being named #1 , #2 , or #3 .

They do practice, just not with assistant coaches. They play skelly all summer, and typically most even compete against other teams. Often the true leaders of a team step up during the summer and lead these practices. Would be curious to hear who led the charge this summer for the Aztecs?
