If we think we deserve a place at the big kids' table, we should be able to go 11-2 or 12-1 multiple times in the next 4-5 years . If we can't do that, P5 dreams are just that - dreams. If we can't do that, we really are living on a prayer and no amount of world class marketing could change that. Expect good things and good things can happen. Expect mediocrity, and mediocrity is what you get. Mediocrity has been keeping the wheels turning for decades... Change is now going to force our hand, and it's time to nut up or shut up. WIN THE GAMES WE SHOULD, and maybe, just maybe, like ONE we shouldn't?
Looking back on the Aztec success in the '70's, including community support, the key was a successful season for a number of consecutive years in terms of wins verses losses. (And yet the best we could do in that decade was a trip to the Carnation Bowl).
If somehow this year's team backs into a 10-11-12-13 win season it will no doubt peak some interest. But, you're right, one season isn't nearly going to seal the deal.
I'll say it again. The fact that I have no use for Aztec football doesn't mean I have no interest. After 35 years, I still keep hoping someone with a true football mind, (not just a football brain), will come along and turn this sorry program right side up.
The fact is, if the time does come that a Charger departure is a done deal, in spite of all the assertions and assumptions, it will truly jolt the city. And it just may not be in the mood for small time Aztec football.
(I can still remember the night the Rockets move to Houston become a done deal, the last words a very angry San Diego sports reporter icon, Al Coupee, said was "we don't need some fly-by-night ABA team coming in to try and fill the gap". Take note Aztec fans).
Carnation bowl? We never even went to ONE bowl in the 70's. Most of the schools we were playing against don't even have a football team anymore. It was essentially a D2 schedule.

So tell us ,retiredaztec, just what year did they play in the Carnation Bowl? Never heard of it. The Carnation Bowl was our "Formal" Bowl game. After being snubbed even though we were ranked, had several years of not more than one or two losses, and totally destroying Florida State (they still got a bowl game that we thought was going to be ours), we declared that the final game of the year against Iowa State would be our "Formal" Bowl game. Everyone attending was encouraged to come dressed in formal attire. Tux rental shops all over the city gave special discounts for Aztec fans. It was in incredible night. It seemed like everybody came dressed to kill. The ladies in their fancy dresses and lots and lots of Tuxes. It was amazing to see the city come together like that to support the Aztecs. Unfortunately it was not a real bowl game, but it had the best atmosphere of any bowl game I've ever seen. BTW, we whipped Iowa State 41-28 to complete a 9-1-1 season and were ranked 19th.

If was essentially a D2 schedule in the 1970's, then we had the best D2 schedules ever. Here is a list of some of the teams we played during the 70's. Some of these teams were a lot better in the 70's than they are now. Houston, Iowa State and BYU were all ranked in the top 20. We finished ranked in the top 20 in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1977 and were ranked in the top 20 during the year in 1971 and 1975. 1970 (W) Brigham Young (W) Southern Mississippi 1971 (L) Southern Mississippi (W) Arizona (L) Iowa State 1972 (W) Oregon State (L) Houston (W) Iowa State 1973 (L) Houston (W) Florida State (W) Iowa State 1974 (L) Arizona 1975 (W) Oregon State (L) Arizona 1976 (L) Brigham Young 1977 (W) Arizona (W) Florida State 1978 (L) Iowa State (L) Brigham Young (L) Miami (L) Utah 1979 (L) Missouri (W) Wisconsin (W) Miami (W) Utah (W) Arizona (L) Brigham Young
