Believe the new coach at USU has scheduled a MBB game: USU at Duke . Game will be on ESPN family network . Congrats to their coach for stepping up and scheduling a quality OOC game . Think BSU , UNLV and others are doing the same . If you want an opportunity to get MM at large bid you better put together a quality OOC schedule (ask CSU ) . Aztecs have Kansas , Utah (road game) for sure plus possibly playing CAL or WVU or Richmond ( Vegas T )

We played @ Duke with Randy Holcomb. I was one of the few boosters who went. What a dump that arena is. Their football field was worse at that time.

Got to see Duke v UNC a while back & it was one of the most electric atmospheres & best places to visit I've ever been.
Good for USU for going there. Will be a good experience for them. They bring back their entire starting unit & practically their entire team so they have an experienced team which makes it more appropriate for a game like this. You don't have to worry about them losing confidence as much as you would a young team, and catching Duke earlier rather than later is always good.

USU scheduling Duke is a net negative for the MWC. USU will not be competing for an at large berth, so losing to Duke only acts to lower the SOS of all other MWC teams. Any team that doesn't have a realistic shot at an at large berth should schedule to maximize wins OOC. Fans who push the idea of lesser conference foes scheduling up, don't understand how the numbers work.

Any team that doesn't have a realistic shot at an at large berth should schedule to maximize wins OOC. Fans who push the idea of lesser conference foes scheduling up, don't understand how the numbers work. Can you explain further? Isn't 50% of RPI based on SOS and 25% based on a sliding formula for wins/losses, so if USU is playing a tougher SOS doesn't that positively impact their RPI & thus ours, even in a loss to a top 3-5 team like Duke on the road?
Also, I actually think USU is a potential at large team. They surprised last year, finished 4th & return virtually everyone. I'd think they could move up to some degree. To me it'd be hard not to see them POTENTIALLY within the top 3 or 4 next year again, and 3-4 going from the conference??
Overall though I agree with you. I think teams should base their schedule to the expectations of their team, more so than just booking a hard schedule. A bottom tier team going 4-8 out of conference against a top 30 schedule doesn't do them or us much good.

How a team affects your RPI is through the change to your SOS when you play them. An opponent affects your SOS by 2/3 their W/L and only 1/3 their opponents W/L. So your opponent having lost to a team that is undefeated adds only .3333 while beating a team that has no wins adds .6667 to be averaged into your SOS. While it is true that their RPI may improve by losing to Duke, that only helps other MWC teams if USU's RPI moves between levels with that jump in RPI. That is, if they move from say #106 to #96. That will improve your top 100 W/L while still lowering your SOS and therefore your RPI.

The MWC is no power conference, but being forced to upgrade became his nightmare.

It may look good for USU to schedule Duke, but the Blue Devils will just shine their floor with them. About the best the Aggies can get from this is they can say they played Duke. OK.
