Interesting momentum happening at Nevada Reno, CSUN and ASU. Musseleman, Theus and Hurley all NBA players & coaches look to be finding a home in the West. Musseleman signed 4 guys since he started, a couple of transfers and the LA CIF POY. Theus just picked up 2 4-star transfers Darin Johnson (WA) Kendall Smith (UNLV). Hurley has brought players and recruits with him from Buffalo and sat with Bailey at his home in UT, so he obviously has chemistry and can connect with young players.
Add in Shaka Smart to the mix, and the recruiting battles in the West and Southwest increase. I think this hurts UNM the most, CSU and then lesser MWC schools like FSU and SJSU.
The Aztecs and UNLV will always recruit well, but now we have to be aware of not only the PAC but some other building programs.

ASU , Nevada , even USD will improve their recruiting , the PAC has really stepped , so there are now numerous schools there to battle for recruits . CAL , OSU , ASU , USC, Washington all doing a good job of recruiting A lot of schools battling for key recruits , in CA , Northwest , Texas . Agree UNM and others who used to work the state of Texas for their recruits will be battling Shaka , USD and others . Now Northridge and others... Nevada picking up decent transfers. The Mountain schools who do not have a great quality of home grown recruits , could have trouble . It shows you better have a good network on the AAU circuit , in a variety of states . Know the recruits and who their key support group is .

Uh no. Nevada and Northridge will not be recruiting near our level anytime soon. There is nothing to beware about

We aren't really competing with any of those teams for recruits, Arizona is our main competition.

CSUN and Nevada are where sdsu was 10 years ago or more. Getting bounce backs but not competing with us for high level high school kids. They dont have the facilities to compete.

I agree that CSUN and Nevada are not at our level, those programs are on the rise. The PAC is getting better Oregon, CAL, Zona all had very good classes + USC and Coach Bland took two top 50 PFs away from us, WDub is in a shuffle. UCLA failed, and we still compete with Zags and UNLV, we can't take for granted our offers, especially when other programs are having a positive impact.
I think the biggest losers will be UNM, CSU and Fresno and San Jose St. What I am talking about is momentum in Reno and Northridge not a complete shift in power.

I do think SDSU does give hope to all the up and coming programs who seek national relevance. The Fish Effect haha

The PAC has really improved with the coaches they have hired the last few years . They signed at least 25 top 150 recruits this year . Already have a couple top 20 for 2016 . For SDSU to move up to SW16 again , we will need to battle for some top recruits in 2016 besides Narain . not going to be easy . Even the Zags have a quality recruit and transfer. Rebels still can recruit. Nevada , helps MW competition . Northridge the BW ( maybe another OOC game ) , USD picked up a couple guys from Texas .

You must be related to a UCLA alum to be that critical. Back to back S16's and bringing in good classes is "failing"? A little harsh. They may not be keeping up the Kentucky's & Arizona's, but they're still pretty elite.
Great gets by CSUN & Nevada, but curious - didn't you think CSUN was going to be pretty decent this year in the BW after seeing them play against us? We did pull away, but watching them I thought they could contend in a conference like the BW. Instead, 4-12 & now losing their 2 best players, and these guys transfers have to sit, right? Plus, Johnson was beat out by a walk on at UW. I do agree Reggie will get the occasion stud transfer, much in the mode of Long Beach St, but can't see them doing any better than winning that conference every 3-4 years.
Nevada will be interesting. Will the excitement of new "pro" coach wear off, or do they continue to grow? They lose a lot after next year, so Mussleman will have his work cut out for him. Has to compete with UNLV to the south, and Utah St, Utah to the north, plus the Cali teams.
PS. I believe 7 teams in the P12 had extremely strong recruiting/transfer classes if not 8, which is a big statement, and if Eric Gordon, Thon Maker & a couple others land in the P12 it only gets better. But rising tides raise all ships - I also believe the MWC is going to be significantly better than we were last year. There are SEVERAL legit programs on the west coast right now, including several risers. Hence why CSUN & UNR are going to have a tough time retaining momentum.

unless these teams start winning right away and have a motivated student body, it's difficult to sustain. though I do like musseleman and smart we ought to keep perspective at where the aztec recruiting is at present and then realistically compare the aztecs to where usd and the rest of these other schools are now. sdsu has a 15 year head start. the aztecs are a national name brand. we have an nba star alumni. we're a basketball destination. getting to the tourney is what we do here.
if these other coaches want to really compete the way the original post suggests they better prepare to walk around campus to give out free tickets, and stay at their schools when they get moderate success. how many great programs get broken when a larger school offers more cash to a coaching staff?
if musseleman or smart are willing to do that, then we might have some western rivals.
otherwise we ought to be really thankful that fisher never jumped boat and that he had his eyes sets on retiring in san diego.

And as soon as these schools have one successful year, the big schools will be calling and these coaches will move on. That is why we were lucky to keep Fisher all these years. We now have a program, and not just a team.

Reno excited by landing former Arizona State commitment Lindsey Drew, Fairfax HS LA CIF section POY. Its not a game changer, but they will get better and hopefully be a boost to the MWC and the league RPI.

He was a ASU 2016 commit but last I saw he was going to go the prep school route before going to ASU as he's still a work in progress. Not the prettiest shooter. Like you said - not a game changer. Was offered by Fresno..

verbal commits has him playing freshman year, 2015. Then that's a big change. He's basically a 3 star project, but could turn into a player by his 3rd year (or not). : )
