UCSD exploring move to Division I... again The Tritons tried to make the jump in 2012, but the measure didn't pass. Now, they're giving it another goBy Stefanie Loh “Our university is about the pursuit of excellence,” Edwards said. “Why shouldn’t athletics, like any other department in the university, be an extension of that for competing at the top level? That would be in line with our philosophy on campus.” ... they aren’t planning to add football to their menu either. Their more modest goal is to join the Big West Conference and compete against other UC schools such as Davis, Irvine, Riverside and UCSB. “We’re not trying to compete with UCLA, but we want to have the opportunity to compete with them,” Edwards said. “That’s the other point: By moving to Division I we will be playing the UCLAS and some other bigger schools, which I think is very attractive versus what we do now with the state schools people aren’t familiar with.” “Division I schools have a clear advantage when it comes to alumni engagement, community involvement and branding,” Edwards said. “Those are things that we are lacking in as a university and athletics can clearly help to adjust that.” www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/apr/19/ucs-tritons-athletics-move-division-i-transition/?#article-copy

Question from reporter, "Did you hear the news Director Sterk?"
Sterk, with big grin, "Yes, I couldn't be happier. We're in serious negotiations. I wish they'd lower their price however. Hopefully, they'll change their mind about a new football program. Maybe we could rise together. You know make a big statement."

This is not a reference to SDSU ... it was about schools like Cal State San Marcos, Humboldt St & Cal-Poly Pomona etc. that make up their current conference ( CCAA)

I hope this doesn't happen. why not? as the 16th fastest growing city in the United States (and already the 8th largest) ... there should be room enough for 3 or more D1 programs. Its gives the City of San Diego another D1 team in Basketball, Baseball & Soccer (etc) -- bringing more D1 teams (even if they are Big West teams) to the city along with their fans and money SDSU gets another D1 game to schedule (and one less exhibition game) without having to travel outside of the city limits (for sports other than basketball). It gives USD another local D1 team to play -- and we can alternate the two of them at Viejas

If they actually ever got funding for a real facility then I think they could actually be pretty damn good one day.

Funny how attitudes change over time. As an undergrad at UCSD, the goal was for 100% student participation in the intramural programs. And back in the day, it was a pretty robust program. There was something for everyone, and everyone I knew was on some kind of team - several, actually - and all year long.
While there were still what we'd now call DII/DIII teams for some team sports, they weren't really the focus at all.
That said, I really don't know if the university ever achieved their 100% goal, but the intention was certainly good.
I wonder how many of their current students are involved in any kind of intramural sports.

I would even welcome CS-San Marcos to the ranks of the D1 if UCSD does improve, in the short term we'll have 2 little sisters -- and should USD and UCSD both become top 100 teams, it will be even sweeter for a "State" school like SDSU to continually dominate them

With their new facility I think it's only a matter of time before that happens. But there's a reason SDSU has tried to block UCSD from becoming a D1 basketball school for a while now.

I was unaware that SDSU has been actively trying to block UCSD from D1 status ... I know the combination of our move to the BW and the lack of student support for higher athletic fees at UCSD killed the 2012 effort. I would agree that it would negatively affect Aztecs football if the Tritons were to field a D1 team, but I don't see how UCSD moving to D1 in basketball (and other sports) would have an effect on SDSU (any more than UC-Irvine or UC-Riverside does). I don't see UCSD building anything to replace 5,000 seat Rimac Arena anytime soon, but I do see them wanting to compete in the Big West against UCI, UCR, UCD & UCSB (along with Cal-Poly, LBSU & CSU-Fullerton) in baseball, basketball and other sports. UCSD is already a member of the MPSF for Men's Volleyball. "... UCSD’s previous dalliance with Division I ultimately failed, and cost remains a prohibiting factor. UCSD’s 2013-14 athletics budget was a little over $8.75 million. Division I UC-Irvine’s athletic budget for the same year was more than $15.9 million." ( SDSU's athletic budget is just under $40 million) I don't think we have anything to fear from UCSD moving to D1. There's two potential reasons why you shouldn't want UCSD to join the D1 ranks, HighNTight. Whether or not they hold any value. I'll leave to the masses.
1. UCSD joining gives the BW a 10th member and greatly reduces, if not completely eliminates, whatever hopes certain Aztec fans might have of us taking San Jose State off your hands.
2. UCSD takes away your safety net. The BW is no longer a fallback option for San Diego State if your efforts to join a p5 conference or form a best of the rest conference come up short, your football stagnates, you need to save money on travel, whatever. We will already have our presence in the San Diego market covered with a UCSD who actually wanted to join.
If UCSD moves up, I hope the BW then takes Grand Canyon and Seattle from the WAC. It would become a nice regional western conference with 12 members and most major western markets covered. I think GCU is going to join within 10 years anyway.

Meanwhile, the CFP limited to 4 teams won't last forever ... just gotta wait for something like 2 of the teams being from a single conference or an independent like Notre Dame to make it and shut 2 or more of the P5 conferences out of the playoffs. Expansion to 8 teams should happen soon after that. I just hope when they do expand to 8 teams (and they will), 1 of those spots will be for the top G5 team -- leaving 5 auto-bids for the P5 champions and 2 at-large for independents and/or a 2nd team from a top conference (or in rare years a 2nd G5 team).

My gut says it will always be at-large...but who knows I would like to hope that the top G5 champion were one of the auto-bids ... it would at least give the appearance of equal access. I would be a really like to see an 8 team CFP that was made up of the five P5 Champs and the other 3 were Notre Dame, MWC Champ (SDSU) and AAC Champ (Cincinnati)

It is interesting though that your suggestion would effectively create a new 90 team playoff division. Which IMO would be the perfect number of D1 programs. The tv ratings would be astronomical.

Seriously doubt there would be any automatic bids to the 8 team playoffs . P5 would want to keep it as the best 8 rated teams . If a G5 team gets in the top 8 then they deserve it. If a G5 team is rated lower , no way will they just give them a spot . They would have to earn it by getting the top 10 - which is doubtful since G5 does not the schedule to get into the top 10 . So as you said win the MW Championship or hope that the best of the G5 can form new conference or just join AAC . Also hope they have at least two better Bowl games rather then 1 .

I completely overlooked that part about the deregulated CCG. Thanks for pointing it out. The Big XII isn't going to add anyone for a while now since they can stay at 10 teams (although they should address West Virginia's isolation). Cincy, Memphis or someone else not named BYU would eat into the revenue pie more than add to it from what I've read on a couple message boards. There is still the SJSU angle though. Do you believe SJSU should stay in the Mountain West?
