...so too does consecutive, respectable preseason tournament appearances. I LOVE going to our preseason tournaments...especially now that we have a "program" that is wanted at the desirable sites. We are coming off of three straight upper-tier tournaments with Power conferences and ranked teams...in destinations we all want to go. Our next three all fit the mold (though I can't divulge more than is publicly known)...starting in Vegas this November. A look at our road to now annually participating in the better preseason tournaments: 2001 - 4 team tournament in Lubbock...played N. Iowa and Texas Tech. 2002 - Nothing 2003 - Maui Invitational. This was not what some think. The NCAA just passed a rule (lasted less than a year) that threw all tournaments into scheduling chaos and basically most the big name schools weren't allowed to play the tournaments they were scheduled to. That's how we backed into this one (earned our way this year). We played Ohio State, Dayton and Chaminade. 2004 - Nothing 2005 - Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks. Played Alaska-Fairbanks, Illinois-Chicago and Southern Miss. 2006 - Shamrock Invitational (St. Mary's). Played Murray State, St. Mary's and Seattle Pacific. 2007 - World Vision Classic (Fresno State). Played Liberty, Portland and Fresno State. 2008 - Great Alaska Shootout (not what it used to be). Played Western Carolina, Seattle and Hampton. 2009 - West Coast Classic (thought up by Santa Clara coach...played on home courts). Played Santa Clara, Fresno and Pacific. 2010 - O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic in Oxford Ohio??? Played Green Bay, IUPUI and Miami of Ohio 2011 - Basketball Travelers Classic (in Viejas). Played Bryant, So. Utah and UC Davis. 2012 - Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. Played San Francisco, Indiana State and #3 Arizona. 2013 - Wooden Legacy in Anaheim. Played College of Charleston, #20 Creighton and #25 Marquette. 2014 - Maui Invitational. Played BYU, Pitt and #3 Arizona. 2015 - Las Vegas Invitational. Field includes West Virgina, CAL and Richmond. 2016 - Good One. 2017 - Good One. That is quite a journey from absolutely no where (and no one wanting us)...to where we are to today. Don't feel bad if you forgot some/many of these tournaments. I was surprised by how many I was able to block out of my mind. Thank You Coach Fisher!

Are the good ones in desirable travel destinations or close to home? I have yet to attend one of the preseason tournaments but it is on my list of Aztec things to do. March madness was a very fun time (twice). Not looking for details just (hoping I can make one)!
Is there any ideas of playing at UCI, UCD, Stanford, Long Beach or USC for drivable road games for recruits to see us near them? I just listed random California schools. Just would be fun for mini road trips. Football has a game versus Cal so that's an opportunity for one

Man, that 2010 tournament was bonkers. We had two comebacks iirc, one of them was something like 25 points against Green Bay?
Anyway- Dave L, when you say "good tournaments", does that mean we aren't the headliner? No specifics needed/wanted, I would just define good in the sense that we'll have the chance to play blue (or close to blue) blood programs that wouldn't otherwise schedule us...

Believe 2010 was CBE Classic

Part of 2010 was playing at Gonzaga.
5 years in a row in the upper half of the brackets says more about our program.

Nick and Bill are both right. I changed 2010 to the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. We were part of the Crap teams that gave the "Big Boys" extra games...then went someplace obscure to play our own little tournament. Little would they know...our "under card" game was our coming out when we beat Gonzaga at their place. More info on it: Link

They have Gonzaga reaching the championship round and we beat Gonzaga at the Dog Pound and Billy White scored 30+ points. In fact we beat all the teams we played,IUPUI, Green Bay, came back from a 25 point deficit. Yet we were not in the championship round? Can you help and old addled mind make sense of this? I remember all of these games, the only one I remember on TV was the Gonzaga game. Thanks!

If they had beaten us...they were not replacing us on our flight over there. Most tournaments can count four games as one...hence the extra home game disguised as a tournament game.

Is there a reason why the T's the Aztecs will play in going forward can not be revealed ? Can we buy a vowel or two ,or use a life line to call a friendly Dave ? Think it helps recruiting when the coaches are on the recruiting trail. . Hope they are "name " tournaments in either Warm Island settings or NYC . The Vegas ones do not seem to be that high brow . take it you are saying the T's are all carried by ESPN . Are we also in the ESPN tip off or other ones they promote .?

Because they haven't been announced to the public. And that doesn't necessarily mean the coaches aren't pitching them on the recruiting trail. It just means Dave isn't posting for everyone to see on a public message board before official release.

It was was one of our first big recognition wins.........then to beat Kansas! Both wins on the opponents home floor where they rarely lose OOC games! = PRICELESS!

funny to see the juxtaposition of this thread against the FB schedule complaints. MBB had to work its way into a premo pre conference schedule, FB is heading in that direction, but like all things it doesn't just happen overnight. Glad Fisher has set such a high standard on the Mesa and changed the fortunes of the MBB program. Where would Aztec athletics be without him?

As much as I dislike going to Vegas, at least our pre-season tournament is within striking distance.

Most of the non-trollers would agree I believe. I also have no idea of any of our 2016 or 17 opponents. Haven't asked. I think I knew Maui opponents about 18 months before event (purely because I know the person to ask...and he has trusted me to keep quiet). There has to be some reasons why these tournaments (and networks) don't want their participants out too early...and the schools comply. It seems to be this way with all of them so one could speculate lots of different reasons.
