Other than this kid being from the Vegas area, I am wondering why he chose UNLV. Frankly, I am wondering why a lot of these kids choose UNLV. Is it the glitz? Is it Bennett going #1 in the draft a few years ago (before flaming out). Because it can't be to improve their basketball game, to become a better player. I would imagine few to none actually believe that. Frankly, I believe it's something more and most like it's $$$ from boosters or something like that. Let's just say I in no way believe in the Desert Miracle. collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/04/16/five-star-7-footer-stephen-zimmerman-commits-to-unlv/

They don't understand human free will and we are only living our lives, no one else's. This kid made a decision on HIS life, and that is that. It was his decision, not anyone else's. Regardless, UNLV is still a quality program to go play for. True, he had offers to go just about anywhere he wanted, but he chose UNLV. There was some factor compelling him to stay. What was it? it doesn't matter. It was his decision on his only life. There was something he liked about UNLV, and that is why I decided to stay in Vegas.

For the life of me, I don't get how they continually get such great talent and highly rated players when they under achieve every year, their coach is on the hot seat and there is major turmoil and turnover each and every year. Something is not adding up.

Maybe the coaches stress scoring and individuals games more than wearing yourself ragged playing D? It has to be something, perhaps the fishing in Lake Mead?

Rice's brother is Zimmerman's HS coach. I think we can all do the math on this one.

Maybe its because they were a major national powerhouse not too long ago and have documentaries about their school like the Fab 5 do... And then there's the playing in a pro-style arena with other highly regarded players ensuring scouts will always be around, not to mention family members, and playing in an actual uptempo scheme that routinely sends multiple guys to the draft and just recently sent a middling MW player to the #1 spot.
Let's face it, UNLV is the most highly regarded school in the MW DESPITE their shite coaching not because of it. We can get there - nothing special about the city or people - but they have way more cache than we, and every other school on the West coast not named Arizona or UCLA, do.
Good for the conference, especially considering the bad coaching. Sour grapes people claiming shady dealings sound EXACTLY like the Lobo trolls that accuse Fisher because of our turn around.

It also helps that almost every huge AAU tournament and showcases are held in Vegas. These kids have been doing road trips there to play on the big stage since they were 11 years old. I used to love going to Vegas to play, these kids are excited by Vegas

You're probably right...Las Vegas players know it's all about them getting their points and moving on to the next level as quick as possible... Couldn't care less about wins, the team, and/or a post tourney run...just want to get their points and opt out before anyone notices that they aren't going to any classes...and since Rice doesn't care what they do on the court or off the court...it's a perfect environment for play-grounders and AAU players...

Writers may talk about individual players on other teams...but as far as class and respect go...Aztec basketball stands head and shoulders above the rest of the league (unfortunately just as Boise does in football).

We are top dog right now Jimmy but we all know UNLV's history in bball. It absolutely kills ours. They still have that name brand that we don't have quite yet nation wide. Even though the recruits now did not grow up watching rebels basketball like during our time, they will know of their history with the Larry Johnson teams and how they made name for unlv. It's a top notch program but with a terrible coach. He is a very good recruiter though. I think it's a good thing to have vegas good (if somehow Rice can) since it will only make us and the league better. We want to play top teams to get ready for the big dance. Good get for UNLV. I still think we will be better for the fact that we have Fisher and staff but they may have closed the gap a little with this kid. Seems like a real good player.

I know they won a national championship in 199...1? Outside of that, they've been an above average program since I started following college basketball (in 2005, when I went to college). College athletics aren't often something people follow before they go to college on the west coast. I really don't think their history plays as big a role as facilities do, but I'm sure others disagree. And of course they wouldn't have those facilities without a strong history, but I don't think most of their recruits are swayed by their parents' college years.

UNLV IS A ONE & DONE school location, why is anyone surprised.
The GOAL is the draft!
With Anthony Bennett #1 - its a proven route.
I'm happy we have a school with a National Championship & 5 stars to compete against, The UNLV game is always the best conf games of the season!
& who doesn't like VEGAS!

What reason does he need for choosing UNLV other than Dave Rice is such a great coach?

Yes...they do have a banner in their rafters...but there is plenty of dust and cobwebs on it... The University of San Francisco won two consecutive championships (with Bill Russell anchoring their winning team)...but I don't hear many kids talking about this when considering going to USF... I completely agree with your assessment with regards to facilities and would add to that - Coaching
- Fan support
- Overall market size (big city vs small town)
- Conference visibility (yes...P5 conferences do sell)
- Team's style of play
- Educational opportunities (playing for Harvard...does provide you with the opportunity to get a Harvard degree at some point)
- College life
- Weather
- Girls (these are young men after all...and you can only play so much basketball)
All of these things matter to a young recruit and possibly their family as well...
The history of the program is nice...especially if you are playing for the legend who actually made the history (like at Duke, Kansas, Kentucky...or even with Steve Fisher at San Diego State)...it's an entirely different thing when a school had a small window of achievement...a generation ago...attributed to a coach who isn't even alive.
