Fish definitely used to walk campus handing out free tix. Cox/Viejas wasn't even close to full his first 5 or 6 years.
And ticket brokers don't get priority. Donors get priority. Those people with the best seats pay far more than the stated season ticket price. You gotta pay to play, some brokers have a ton of 'priority points' but they aren't given any special treatment like the individual donors are.

per ziegler UT The Aztecs have sold out 55 straight games at Viejas Arena. The school has a 750-person wait list for season tickets, and annual renewal rates have been north of 95 percent in the last three years. Renewals are due May 6. Already renewed both Football & Basketball for next season.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, my memory fails me more and more often these days, and I don't know if ANYBODY has ever mentioned this before, but didn't Steve Fisher used to go around campus trying to hand out basketball tickets to students? If I'm way off base here, please do let me know. Maybe it's another school I'm thinking of. I thought I remembered hearing a TV announcer say this one time on air... I think it was the same announcer who said something about Coach Dutcher taking over the program once Coach Fisher decides to retire... It's really hard for me to remember what all those east coast reporters say about the Aztec's program...just so much information from them I can never keep it all straight...

Those people with the best seats pay far more than the stated season ticket price. You gotta pay to play, some brokers have a ton of 'priority points' but they aren't given any special treatment like the individual donors are. Brokers don't get priority....and donors, in general, don't get priority...people with priority points get priority... Three basic ways to get priority points... 1) 2 points for each continuous year of being a season ticket holder 2) 1 point for every $100 donated in the current calendar year 3) 1 point for every $1,000 of lifetime giving In addition, there are bonus points given from time to time (like 5 extra points for being a football season ticket holder). If a certain ticket broker has purchased season tickets for a number of years...and has a lot of them (let's say 20 seats in total...with the associated donor fees)...then there is a very good chance that that ticket broker has a very high priority point total...and thus has the opportunity to purchase additional tickets (yet increasing their point totals even further). The only hope is that no one actually buys tickets from these brokers and they get burnt holding tickets that they can't sell...but that's living in a fantasy world... Unfortunately...the system is set up to reward ticket brokers (or people who pool their tickets...or people who can write a big check to the Aztec Club)...it's the real world...

It's a story a lot of announcers like to use, and it is true.

One thing the ticket office should do, and I have talked to folks in that office about it, is set up a system where season ticket holders can donate tickets to the university. It would have to be like a day in advance and the school could resell the tickets. The donation can be added to the tax information that is sent about the current seat donations. That would give people an additional motive to donate the tickets. There is no reason for empty seats when other people really want to go to the game. Uh, they have this system already...

There's always stubhub..............its only a 5000% mark up........... Not sure who is buying the tickets next to me but they are always empty for out of conference games and bad games. When they do show up they are never the same people so I guess either a company is buying them and giving them to different people or someone like stub hub is buying the season seats. Do brokers buy tickets direct or do they just get tickets from others who don't use them and then resell them? If brokers are buying them direct, then the Aztecs should definitely not be selling to them and sell them to real fans.

If a ticket broker has seats that are often empty, they should get in a different business. A year when Kansas visits isn't one when ticket brokers would be bailing.

Uh, they have this system already... Don't think so. The ticket office has computer files with email addresses of season ticket holders and files with tickets that weren't used. Those two files can be used to create an email to ticket holders whose tickets weren't used. The email can detail the method to donate future tickets that won't be used and the reasons why that's a good idea. The application can remember who got emails so they aren't spammed every game. I suspect a lot of tickets are business tickets that aren't used unless someone in that office claims them or old people who just use to buy them as a donation.

I know that we are dollar poor but that kind of attendance plus the money from the NCAA tourneys over the years has to help, doesn't it?

Fish wouldn't sink so low as to personally go hand out tix to the riff-raff.

I'm really lucky. Two years ago when I got my Masters, the University offered grads-to-be season tickets (bench seats) for $100 for the season, price guaranteed for two years. I jumped on it buying two tix. Two years have passed and now I have to pay full price.... and I plan to. No way I get rid of those!!

They could be sitting there. I do that with my buddy. I have bench seats but we often get there early and just sit in the student section. They don't check tickets.
