Yes he has been touting his brother who has been an assistant coach for 19 years at a variety of schools in the west . but not any HC experience. Lately he has been at PAC schools . has helped recruit at least two good recruits for OSU for 2015 and helped them improve last year. So is a good coach and recruiter. But not much familiarity with WCC , as Grier found out coming in as an assistant from the Zags then being a winning coach in HC is not easy . Zags own the WCC , recruiting , transfers , out of the country players , now success in MM . BYU has its strong network , national name and best facility in WCC, so USD is not that easy of a recruiting school but maybe some one with strong recruiting ties could do it or at least get them close as number #2 . Musselmen (sp) really wanted the job but was told they still wanted to look at others so he jumped on Reno job , another tough gig (has Reno announced if they are doing Stipends for all their athletes ?).

Is Velasquez getting any interviews? Not sure if serious.

Zeigler hinted a strong candidate could be Kyle Smith ,2010- current HC at Columbia ( has HC experience ) was an assistant coach at USD from 1992-2000 , then an assistant at St Mary's 2001-2010 , set up their offense and top recruiter ( helped get them into MM ). So he knows WCC and recruiting . Is 46 years old and from Texas ( another recruiting area). Doug Gotlieb was advocating that his brother get the USD gig. Greg probably deserves the shot. Would be a good fit for a place like USD.

USD: Where head coaching careers go to die. Funny, they were saying the same thing about us even when we had just hired Fisher. Fisher has shown anything is possible if the right coach comes along. Hutson is a very good coach and recruiter. Let's not forget he is the one that lured Kahwi here. He will be sorely missed if he leaves, but he deserves a head coaching job because he has earned it.

Is Velasquez getting any interviews? Not sure if serious. Definitely not serious I presume however he has done well, works very hard, and a great film coach too. He'll grow and be a great coach one day soon.

Nothing against USD, but I'm not sure how you can win consistently there. Getting players in academically is very hard, so that is against you from the start. If he goes there I would wish him nothing but the best, but I would think that he would struggle just like previous coaches that have been there before. It's a private University , there is nothing hard about getting players in.

For some reason, I just don't see Hut taking another job at this point. I could be way off. I think it's smart to interview to prepare for the time he does leave....I think that will be when Coach Fish decides to hang 'em up. But this is just a feeling.

If he does land the gig, and not to start any funky rumors but what about DA & DW following him? Seems like 2 players who could be a good cornerstone defensively for the program in a couple years. Heck, reach out to Darin Johnson at UW & you could recreate the Sarkesian 3.... Hope Hutson a ton of success, but really hope he decides to stick around for a couple more years. Those three aren't from Sarkesian. They are all from Sheldon High in Sacramento.

I wouldn't take the USD job unless they made a serious commitment to the program financially.
If you fail there other AD's wont care why, they'll just blame you for the failure - even if the school itself was largely responsible. It's a huge risk to take a job at a school that hasn't made a serious commitment to winning. Sometimes it's better to wait a couple years and take a job at a better athletic school.
On the other hand, USD's women's BB program is doing pretty well, so who knows? They've got a nice gym to play their games in, and there are worse places to go...

To add, the media in this town have done a great job over the years as making USD appear to be some elite academic institution. There is nothing wrong with USD, but it is a middle of the road school, no better, and in many cases ranked worse, than State. It has never been an elite academic school and this "can't get players in" nonsense is always spewed but never quantified.

USD is a middle tier job in a middle tier conference, it isn't a dead end job where you can't win, and it isn't some great job.

USD is a middle tier job in a middle tier conference, it isn't a dead end job where you can't win, and it isn't some great job. It pays very very well, Grier was taking home a truckload of money.

So does this come down to money? What do you think Hutty wants. More money now, or to stay at SDSU while we get better? Only he can make that choice.

would guess you do NOT want to replace a "winning legend at a school " . So check that box. Be able to advance in the conference and get some national recognition for your hard work . At USD ( his family could stay here) , and they could get a chance to move up to number 2 or 3 in the WCC , after the Zags , BYU . But is that likely to get you into MM ? Or is he happy being HC at USD for a while ? If it is money can the "JAM " group help out ?
