Seems to me a lot of people wouldn't care if SD loses the Chargers, Comic-Con and Qualcomm as long as they conceive that they don't have to pay anything...
BAMM!!!!!!!
Add Aztec football to that equation. The history of Aztec football is Aztec Bowl and Jack Murphy Stadium. When the stadium was approaching 30 years old, the decision was made to gut the long empty football stadium and build a basketball arena.
Sadly, my first time in this new arena I was underwhelmed by its simplicity, (like they just dug a big hole and put in seats....hmmmmm). The fact is, the San Diego Sports would STILL have been a better venue for Aztec basketball if for no other reason than I could continue to consume cocktails while watching the men's team lose, (or win). And if they'd had the same success they've had at Cox, I trust the SD Sports Arena would have been just as full as Cox and SDSU could have focused on the ONE thing that pretty much separated them from any other member of any conference they belonged to in recent decades...an on-campus stadium, that could be brought back to life.
Now, as I understand it, State is going to pony up some $120,000,000 for 60 acres of land(?!)...for what? A new stadium? A new campus? Not if ONE PENNY has to come out of San Diegan's pockets. Sorry, but in the real world they're just not that in to you.
Yeah, my sad tale is "water under the bridge", just like toppling a dictator, creating a vacuum resulting in a total crapfest in lands that have very dangerous people that have truly grown to hate us. But decisions have consequences and the short sighted thinking of past State administrators is something they're going to have to work through. Or just focus on maintaining the existing campus. Now there's a thought.
I truly wish it was as easy as people on this OPINION board make it. It all looks so good on paper.

Many people are just into themselves for better or worse. Selfish bastards. Probably a combination of selfish, stubborn people and transplants who really don't care about our fine city. Either they call somewhere else 'home' or they're here passing through until their job takes them somewhere else again. (I knew a lot of transplants from my last job and people I've me through friends who fit those descriptions). I almost think that you shouldn't be able to vote in local elections unless you've lived here x amount of years.

I can see a Super Bowl coming to SD at least once every ten years. LA as well. Why wouldn't there be any other big events to come here? Why not a World Cup with new stadiums in LA, SF, Arizona? Bigger Bowl games? Bigger concerts? WrestleMania (just like the one that was just held in Levi Stadium)? It could lure a MLS franchise here. So many things could come from this.

I disagree regarding the frequency of hosting Super Bowls ... if the current trend in stadium construction holds: "... And there are signs the trend is accelerating. Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder recently said his team is already starting to look for a replacement for FedEx Field. It opened in 1997. "We love FedEx Field, it's a great place to feature our home games, but it's 17 years old now. So I think it's time for us to start looking," he said in a television interview." The NFL has begun to promise a Super Bowl to new stadiums as an enhancement to construction negotiations, with 32 teams trying to build a new stadium every 20 years or so, "If you want to keep up with the Jerry Joneses, a 20-year-old stadium isn't going to cut it," said Marc Ganis, a sports industry consultant who has worked on numerous stadium deals, referring to the Dallas Cowboys owner who opened a billion dollar stadium in 2009. Then it's likely that a new stadium in San Diego would get a Super Bowl once, maybe twice before a new stadium would be demanded. A stadium of any size (with or without a roof) would have to compete with other venues in San Diego like Viejas Arena, the Amphitheater in Chula Vista, Petco Park and the Sports Arena for concerts, WrestleMania and other events. MLS has some specific ideas about the size of the venue they prefer to play in, I don't think a 65K plus stadium would fit their criteria.

www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-0408-nfl-stadium-scenarios-20150408-story.html#page=1Nobody has followed this story and has more contacts than Sam Farmer. If he says two stadiums being built is "implausible," I say the Chargers aren't going to Carson. Period. It's almost a foregone conclusion the Inglewood stadium is going to be built. Inglewood is gaga to get that done as evidenced by the huge land development project which will be included. And Kroenke has megabucks and is hell bent on moving there. Granted, St. Louis looks like it will build a new stadium but I think it will end up holding a different team than the Rams. Very possibly the Raiders. That would make everybody happy except the residents of Oakland and, sadly, they just don't count because it's all about money and Oakland is strictly a blue collar city. Would the Spanoi agree to be Kroenke's tenant? Not happily. Would Kroenke want to have them? Probably not. But if enough other owners forced the issue, it could happen. In the meantime, am I the only one who wonders why a Chargers to Anaheim move hasn't been considered? A football stadium proximate to Angels Stadium and the Honda Center would make a lot of sense and there's probably plenty of room to build one nearby.

I truly wish it was as easy as people on this OPINION board make it. It all looks so good on paper. When does a city pay for a universities stuff? It would take state bonds, private donors, and various student/alumni fees and naming rights. A large endeavor, for sure. But if you haven't been on campus, there is starting to run out of available space for a lot of things, and we have a serious lack of recreational green space as is. It's not a bad thing to kick around in our noggins.

There are plenty of NFL and NFL-sized stadiums being used for MLS. I looked at upcoming events for 2015 at Petco Park and Viejas Arena and I couldn't find many. A couple of motocross events and a two big concerts for Petco. I guess you probably can't have too many events at Petco from April to October. Viejas had five concerts listed for 2015. Seems like the Amphitheater has a lot more stuff going on but not exactly the greatest location for a lot of North County.

Your first consideration in choosing what venue to contract with, you have to be realistic about the number of seats you can fill at the price you want to charge per ticket. That is your first cut -- if you're gonna sell about 20K in tix, you don't book anything bigger and you don't want anything too much smaller unless you want to play more than one show. The next cut is competitive bidding, as in how much will the rent for the venue cut into your profits. A moderating factor would be if you can negotiate a piece of the parking or concessions ... if you can, then the higher rent amount would be less of an issue. In all these facets -- stadium shows come up as a non-preferable.

Don't you think the Stones would rather play in front of 70k instead of 45k? As far as signage it would all be electronic. Apparently no on-campus stadium will be built per JD Wicker. Either they (sdsu) ride the coat tails of the Chargers or they have to figure out a way to fund the Q site. FWIW- the head of the stadium committee is on the Board of Trustees for the Cal St system and the mayor is a graduate of State and a former Aztec Athletic Foundation Board Member, as I was. So your statement of afterthought is only a guess on your part.

It's not a bad thing to kick around in our noggins. There's still plenty of usable space on campus for buildings. Just build parking garages on 1/3 - 1/2 of the flat lots now and use the rest for buildings. There's a lot along Alvarado that is used by nothing except for the 18wheeler and Christmas Tree recycling in January. For greenery, plant some trees but then again, we're in a severe drought at this time. If someone wants recreational green space, use the practice fields w/ the artificial green stuff. It's all a matter of space utilization, just like the casinos/hotels do on the Strip in Vegas.
