Any school in the country, including Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc etc... 15+ years as 'lead' assistant coach qualifies you to become the next head coach. Especially at SDSU... where Fisher delegates a lot of responsibilities to assistant coaches... where Dutcher has been involved in recruiting for a long time... where Dutcher is well respected by current and ex-players. That is a fact. The fact is Dutcher has NEVER been a HC. Plenty of former assistants who became HCs failed as well as many succeeded. I prefer someone who has a proven track record as a HC rather than one who has only been an assistant. Again, no offense or knock on Dutch. Obviously many thought Rice who had been a well respected assistant coach would become a good HC or UNLV would never have hired him. Also obviously, he's proven that he's NOT a good HC. Grier, who just got fired at USD was a longtime assistant to Mark Few at Gonzaga. I'm sure we could find a lot longer list of failures of assistants becoming HCs rather than HCs becoming HCs elsewhere. I'll leave you with this thought... Fish thinks Dutch is qualified for the position. That's good enough for me.

I'm sure we could find a lot longer list of failures of assistants becoming HCs rather than HCs becoming HCs elsewhere. And you could find a longer list of those who have been very successful, including the one you name above. PRIME example of a good program with a good formula, which we're following (without spending money on a search).
BTW, how does a coach develop a "proven track record as a HC"? Nearly every single coach, including Menzies & others, came from being an assistant & developed into a HC. Someone had to give them their first chance, like NMST give Menzies. Dutcher's been here 16 years, and won't have to develop the program, lose any momentum in recruiting, nor will the players have to go through a season of adjustments.
Why are you questioning Dutcher so much?
BTW, part of a reason assistants fail at their first job is they're replacing someone who got FIRED, and the program they're coming to is not greatly established. Dutch won't have that mountain to climb. He's being set up for success.

In every post I've made in this thread, I've indicated "nothing against Dutch" or "no knocks on Dutch" so how in the hell can you come to the conclusion that I have anything against Dutch? I've been very clear that it is my opinion that this program is at the level to have an open interview process and IF Dutch is the most qualified then hire him. IF he isn't, then go another direction i.e. someone who does have a successful track record as a HC. Why is this so hard to understand? As I've told others, read the words, don't read into the words. FWIW- I have the same belief in ANY coaching change whether it's at State or otherwise. FIND THE BEST NEW HC whether he comes from within or outside. PS Rice didn't replace someone who was fired at Vegas. Lon Kruger is back in the Big Dance with his 4th team at OU. He's lucky he's got a staff who can recruit as well as almost anybody in the country.

The fact you keep insisting on opening up the interviewing process while very well knowing we have a HC in waiting by definition indicates you do not have faith in Dutcher. Opening up the interviewing process when you know you have a more than qualified person sitting right on the bench would only show you don't lack faith in him and is not the right answer. When we made the decision to make him the coach in waiting we by definition went thru the interviewing process & came to the conclusion he is more than qualified to take over.
There's no reason to go out & seek out another candidate when you have one in-house. NONE.
Why can't you accept the fact that by maintaining continuity while ALSO hiring a more than qualified person IS finding the BEST NEW HC!??
PS. Who mentioned Rice? I said the reason MANY assistant HC's fail when they get their first attempt is because those first attempts aren't always at good programs.

We've hired 2 extremely successful head coaches (Brandenburg and Trenkle) with disastrous results. I think our chances are much better with Dutcher than taking a gamble with someone from outside the program. If he falls on his face, unlikely, then we look elsewhere.

I don't believe Fisher had HC experience at the college level when he became HC at Michigan. I'm for giving it to Dutch.

Listen- I don't care if it's John Calipari, Rick Pitino or ANY HC who is retiring, I believe that it's best to open up the process up to find the best candidate AND IF THAT CANDIDATE IS ALREADY IN-HOUSE THEN YOU HIRE HIM. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE COACH-IN-WAITING unless you are afraid to lose that coach. So, you're assumption is totally f'd up. I KNOW WE'RE NOT GOING TO OPEN ANYTHING UP BECAUSE THE AD CHOSE TO PUT THAT LABEL FOR DUTCH. CAN YOU COMPREHEND THIS YET? As to whether or not I have faith in Dutch as NOTHING to do with it.

If a really good guy with HC experience such as a Menzies became available we would NOT be interested because we want Dutcher MORE. You don't think Sterk is aware of the potential pool of coaches? He STILL wants Dutcher.
Opening it up (if w/o HC in waiting title) would be useless & a waste of time & money.

Who the F is "we"? Are you Sterk's assistant? The you aren't part of "we", whoever that is.
I get it plenty. You just think you know more than you do. You're not paying attention to what I said. I said it again...I (REPEAT AFTER ME)....I DON'T BELIEVE IN THE COACH IN WAITING TITLE AND WOULD NEVER USE IT IF I WERE THE AD. EVEN AT KENTUCKY!!! What Sterk did is his choice, no doubt with plenty of influence from Fish. Only time will tell whether or not Sterk's decision was the right one. Are you dense or just not paying attention?

Then THANK GOD you're not the AD, because in this situation I believe most would. Continuity is actually a plus in the minds of many, so on that we'll definitely disagree. And no, don't think I'm "smarter" - just have a significantly different perspective & opinion than you do.
And "we", in case you can't grasp it, is like when people say "we won" yet "we" were not on the court playing were "we"? Or "we" played Duke last Sunday even though I really doubt anyone on this board really did. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to comprehend. Get it?

So you deemed that "we" is the majority of the SDSU base. I'd bet your assumption is incorrect. If you were right, then more schools would issue that title. Know of any others in College Hoops? There's been very few in College Football and for the most part those "in waiting" folks took other HC jobs first. FWIW- Dutcher is 0-1 as a HC at State. I hope he is a good HC but until he takes over and runs with it for awhile WE won't know. Also FWIW- Haven't you ever wondered why he hasn't gotten a good HC job elsewhere after all these years? I might know more about this than you do......and I'll leave it at that. You're right, your perspective is significantly different because of your narrow focus on the subject. Come back to me when you can name 10 other Coach in Waiting in all of D1 hoops out of the 300 + D1 programs. So are you a Zoob? Is that what the "coug" part of your name is? Either way, you aren't a Rocket Scientist on this subject.

Think mighty highly of yourself - laughable.
He's loyal - he's had other opportunities.
So something isn't widely used it's a bad thing? Brilliant - who would want a unique or new idea. How many programs have a coach they KNOW is going to retire in the next few years? BTW, what do you think the motivation is behind the title? He's already proven his loyalty - it's not going to make him more likely to stay. Because he wants more words next to his name? Because Dutch needs the official title to feel he'll get the job? he can get that in conversations, and it pretty confidence in himself. No. When you have a coach who has said he WILL retire in the short term you want the kids you're recruiting to know that the year they get there or the year after there isn't going to be a staff change. They KNOW who will be coaching them throughout their career, which is a critical factor in why they're still choosing to come to state.
But if you're so smart you should already know that.
And no, talk about swooshed. "We" doesn't mean the collective majority of the SDSU FAN base. When you say "we won" are you saying the majority of our fan base won the game for us? You're referring the team. The program. That's who won. When you say "we" have a game on Saturday the collective majority of the SDSU fan base will not be playing the game. We is used to talk about the teams/program. The people you (in theory) are involved with and support (or in your case everyone but Dutcher).
But I would guess the majority of the fan base WOULD support Dutcher as the next HC. Other than you of course and your "inside" knowledge.

Other teams were hinting that Fisher was going to retire soon . Fisher wanted a set plan in place so there was not going to be a problem when recruiting and running the program , probably part of the deal for him to stay was that Dutcher would be the next coach- set deal . Like it or not Dutcher will be the next coach . Fisher has already started having Dutcher do some of the duties of the HC , so there will be an easy transition ,recruiting , running the team , being on TV and radio..... Doing many of the same thing Fisher used to . Not sure if they have pictures of Dutcher with Fab 5 or with K.L . Not sure how many years are on the contract for Dutcher ?

The more you type the more foolish you sound. We both have the same goal, get the best replacement for Fish when he decides to step down. Your way, we have 1 candidate. My way, and the way most ALL schools do it, we'd have a variety of options. Either way, we could end up with the same HC. Shouldn't finding the BEST replacement be the goal? Again, since you don't get it, Dutch could be that guy but maybe not. By the way, I knew you couldn't come up with 10 schools with coaches-in-waiting. There's only 4 and SDSU is one of them. FWIW- Bill Grier was a HC-in-waiting at Gonzaga far before Mark Few would retire. How'd did that work out for USD by hiring him? Fish hasn't said anything about retiring so that blows your first paragraph above. He could continue as long as he does a great job and feels like doing it. Who knows how long that will be. He keeps getting contract extensions that covers any inbound recruit. No coach can guarantee they'll be there throughout a recruits tenure. They'll all say it but guarantee it, not a chance. As for supporting Dutch as the next course......man you're smart. Of course everybody will support him as long as he'd doing well. Hopefully that will be for as long as he wants to coach. Since you assume you're right in the way it was done, then I guess 333 out of 337 D1 Basketball schools must not have a f'ing clue.

Fish has talked specifically about retiring, but you may have missed that given your bias towards Dutch. Other programs use that in recruiting. As for 347 of 351, didn't realize 351 schools have coaches nearing retirement and are in the same situation as us. Wow - amazing all teams are in the same situation, right? And tell me, how does your "interview everyone" scenario address the concerns of recruits unsure of who will be coaching them? It doesnt. And no, coaches cant guarantee they'll be there but most arent known to be in their final years either. Our situation IS unique, and if you could get past your bias you'd actually figure that out. BTW, you've been "foolish" from the get go, but you know that.

When was Grier coach-in-waiting....maybe when Few was mid-40s. I have no bias as I've told you OVER AND OVER AND OVER and f'iNG OVER. You're flunking reading comprehension each and every post you make. Congrats! I just want the BEST REPLACEMENT FOR FISH WHOEVER THAT IS. Now stop before you type anymore nonsense.

Only 4 out of over 300 schools believe in it so if you're in agreement w/ the other psoter than you're as dumb as he/she is. Why don't you go back to your Monopoly game trying to figure out why the new stadium won't get built?

The main problem with getting into a "pissing match" is that everyone gets pissed on.
