How many years ago was that? Why are you referring to something that happened 18 years ago and defining him today? He's definitely been approached within the last 16 years, and he's MORE than qualified to take over this program. There are few men as loyal as Dutcher. can you name who he was approached by? Was it a small division 2 program or division 1 program? Or are you just assuming that he was? "Dutcher's reputation has prompted interest from programs seeking a head coach from time to time, but they all have been turned away. That's the kind of loyalty he has to his longtime friend and the program they built together."

I wonder if Dutch will have a different offensive scheme.

From a prior article:
Schools have tried luring him away, knowing his DNA is on the Aztecs' continued success. But their offers can't trump his quarter-century partnership with Fisher, so they never pass the sniff test.
“In this coaching business, it's like you never seem to stop and smell the roses,'' Dutcher said. “A lot of guys, all they do is look for the next job and that is what their life is about. They have one foot out the door.''
And from Jamaal:
“He could have easily left this program and be a head coach anywhere in the country,'' SDSU forward Jamaal Franklin said. “But him being a loyal guy and a good person, he is sticking it out with Coach Fisher. But Coach Dutch will get his opportunity.''
His dad was a very successful HC. Anyone who follows the game knows that his resume alone would yield several offers to D1 programs. The fact he chooses not to publish nor use those offers in contract negotiations is a sign of the type of person he is.
But then again, you'll probably never believe he's qualified to coach anywhere until it happens, so why bother making the point with you, right?

let's see if he has that same "loyalty" if he's a runaway success as head coach at SDSU

I hate when they just give it to the next guy on the staff, the way they did with football. I would much rather prefer an open search and if coach Dutcher is the best guy then, so be it. Totally agree. Nothing against Dutch, but this program is at the level that an open interview process should be used to see who else is seriously interested in being the HC here.

I'm not sure how much longer Coach Fisher will stay. Of course he will stay as long as he wants --
But count me as one who is not concerned at all when Coach Dutcher moves up to the #1 spot, whether that's in one year or five. For all we know he may take the Aztecs to a whole new level of success.

Not many established coaches would come to SDSU... for what we could pay them. Dutch is qualified (let's be honest, he has helped build this program to what it is)... and perhaps more importantly, is willing to work for relative peanuts. Turning your back on the 'head-coach-in-waiting' now would send a terrible message.

Those thinking the grass is greener on the other side need look no further than the big story hires of Sendek and Enfield on the PAC 12. I trust Fish.

Two years ago it was the connections of Dutcher that produced a Great Aztec4Life: Josh Davis.
I'm thinking that ole Dutch still has a little left in the tank for the Aztecs.

We're committed to Dutch. As to whether or not he's qualified is questionable as he's never been a HC. That's no knock, it's just a fact. There are HCs who are successful, who make less $, who would want to come here. Marvin Menzies is one.

Any school in the country, including Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc etc... 15+ years as 'lead' assistant coach qualifies you to become the next head coach. Especially at SDSU... where Fisher delegates a lot of responsibilities to assistant coaches... where Dutcher has been involved in recruiting for a long time... where Dutcher is well respected by current and ex-players. That is a fact.

Half the job in being a good HC is having a staff that can recruit quality players . Next is being able to coach those recruits get the most out of all the guys , then it is how you communicate with the players , motivate , get guys mentally ready . schemes for offense and defense for game day and scouting future games ( many times that is done by the assistants ) . Right now Fisher is already having Dutcher do some of his duties then Fisher is the closer . Dutcher has been soaking in the little things that Fisher does , will have the JAM center . Not sure how much Fisher would be able to do when Dutcher is the coach ,to help seal the deal on the recruiting . Would guess there are numerous pictures of Dutcher and Fab5 or with KL. so we know ditcher will get at least a few years to make it or break it.

Is anyone else the least bit apprehensive thinking about the day, hopefully way down the road, when Coach finally says he's had enough. I know Coach Dutcher has been the Coach in waiting for years and it is a forgone conclusion that he will be the next head coach. But I have to admit that it makes me a little nervous to turn over the reigns to someone that hasn't had any head coaching experience. I realize that they have been together forever and ideas and game plans are probably already a joint venture. I also understand that he probably would have been long gone if that title and promise were not made to him. But, the bottom line is he has never had to be the man to make the decisions on his own. He will have assistants to bounce ideas off of but when it comes down to it the final say will be his and his alone. Will he stay the course and stress defense above all else, will he look for a mixture and sacrifice some defense for more offense. I honestly just don't know much about Coach Dutcher other then he has always been the right hand man. I agree it is the right decision to hand it over to him when that dreadful day happens upon us...... and loyaly to the players has been evident over the years so I wouldn't expect anything else for the staff. Hoping others with more knowledge of the staff and their philsophies can tell me that I have nothing to fear and the program will be in great hands........... Coach Dutcher has been around the block a few times, and knows as well as anyone what it has taken to turn Aztec Basketball into a relevant program after so many years as a joke. If you believe that Coach Fisher has been truly great for SDSU (and I do) then why not trust him in his recommendation/choice for a successor.

That is a fact. The fact is Dutcher has NEVER been a HC. Plenty of former assistants who became HCs failed as well as many succeeded. I prefer someone who has a proven track record as a HC rather than one who has only been an assistant. Again, no offense or knock on Dutch. Obviously many thought Rice who had been a well respected assistant coach would become a good HC or UNLV would never have hired him. Also obviously, he's proven that he's NOT a good HC. Grier, who just got fired at USD was a longtime assistant to Mark Few at Gonzaga. I'm sure we could find a lot longer list of failures of assistants becoming HCs rather than HCs becoming HCs elsewhere.
