"The mayor and others are buoyed by the increased involvement of San Diego State, which owns property and has the financial resources to contribute toward the stadium" -Lets hope that any involvement by SDSU contains land for an expansion of campus and EQUAL partnership in a new stadium (with full rights to revenue generated by parking, signage and concessions)
"Still, this will take cooperation from the Chargers, a willingness by the team to accept creative solutions. It is still considered a near certainty by some that the Chargers will find problems with whatever plan the task force presents." -Will the Chargers accept the Aztecs as EQUAL partners in a new stadium?

HighNTight - When you consider how little both the Chargers and SDSU use that much land... I would love to see creative development down there. We're talking 16 games a year(it) for something that costs more than $1 billion. Certainly, there has to be a better use of space both functionally in the community and as it relates to revenue.

Bingo Bango. Such a wasted opportunity if we keep it just at a structure. It can be so much more than just a parking lot and a stadium.

And whatever the plan is it will be a simple majority vote on a county wide scale. I think they want SDSU to be a partner especially because there will be more public support and less court reviews if a school takes over part of the property vs. condos and businesses.

It is a mistake to just think of this facility as just a use for the Chargers and Aztecs. The Q has also been a place for bowl games, concerts, supercross, fire rescue center, etc. USD also has ambitions to be D-1, so maybe they could play there too. The city really needs to utilize this new facility creatively. I hate MLS soccer but this might be the impetus to get a team for that too. A retractable roof should be considered because due to our mild weather we wouldn't need an expensive structure since we don't have to worry about high winds or snow. This would allow us to go after the NCAA Final 4 like the Cowboy's stadium in Arlington. We really need to not just think of this as a Charger's only stadium.

Chargers president Dean Spanos, according to multiple sources, is believed to have accepted that the downtown site is a non-starter.
And it only took that rocket scientist 14 years to figure it out.

As a native and current San Diegan, SDSU alumnus, San Diego pro-teams fan, and tax payer, I think my dream scenario would be:
- Qualcomm Stadium and Sports Arena demolished. Saves San Diego maintenance costs for horrible facilities
- Convention Center/Stadium Downtown. To maximize the usage, the building can be used for just more then 10 Charger games, 6 Aztec Games, 2 Bowl Games, a Monster truck rally, MotoX, and Jehovah's Witnesses. That's only 21 days (I used to work at the Q for 5 years, btw). Tie in ComiCon and other conventions, and add back Big Night San Diego, etc., and hopefully the once a decade Super Bowl, and that is great value for the land and building.
- SDSU takes over current Mission Valley site - Add more classrooms, student housing, add degree programs that raise the school's academic standings and alumni donations. And...
- On campus stadium for SDSU football and MLS team - Multi-use project to split funding, maximize resources, and use. Maybe host Final Fours?
- City uses development of Sports Arena area, sale of Qualcomm site, Convention Center budget, hotel tax, whatever, for their share of funding Downtown Stadium. Spanos and NFL throws in as well.
- SDSU and/or State gov't could add some parks, river restoration, and development in Mission Valley site.
- San Diego Gulls - Umm.. Viejas? In new arena at current Sports Arena? Facility for concerts and the opera as well.
Yea.. one can dream

As long as we're throwing our ideas out there ... It would be great if the 3 or 4 projects could all be advanced at the same time from separate funding sources:
Convention Center Expansion (contiguous) funded by an increase to the Transit Occupancy Tax for hotels and rental cars (2/3 City of San Diego vote)
Chargers Stadium in El Cajon funded by a combination of Charger/NFL & Public Funds from San Diego County and the Cities of El Cajon & Santee (Public funding voted on by Santee, El Cajon and County of SD)
SDSU expansion in Mission Valley (funded by SDSU, CSU-System and State of California), Chargers and Aztecs continue to play there until the County Stadium in El Cajon is completed, then SDSU can demo the Q and build a 40-50K Aztec/MLS stadium on the expanded campus.
Sports Arena either renovated/expanded at the Midway site or a new arena built downtown ... the funds could come from a sale of the Qualcomm site to SDSU (166 acres at $2M/acre = $332M)

How about...
- Sell Sports Arena to development for funds to build downtown Arena & convention expansion (conventions could actually use the arena vs a stadium).
- Build new stadium in Mission Valley (between Qualcomm and Int 15) with new south entrance/exit bridge over SD River directly to Int 8. After completion, demo Qualcomm and create 3 story parking garage on about 25% of lot. Then sell western 25% to SDSU for two dorm towers, student parking structure and student commons building. Remaining portion of lot salvaged for tailgaters.
In the end, Chargers satisfied, SDSU expands campus and gets new NFL stadium (recruits would freak out!!!), sports arena eye sore goes way, convention gets expansion and useable attached arena.
Too good to be true?

Too good to be true? how about we split the Q site back into the 2 parcels, one owned by the City and the other owned by the water district ... Let the water district sell their 80+ acres to SDSU and let the City decide what they want to do with their 80+ acres. The only reason the Stadium Task Force is not considering other sites than just downtown and Qualcomm is because they were assembled by the mayor of SD and are probably limited to a City of SD solution. If the STF were a function of the County and not the City, perhaps they could expand their site search beyond the 2 sites identified to include considering other sites in the county like Chula Vista or El Cajon.

Here's an interview with Acee where he talks about SDSU getting more involved. www.mighty1090.com/episode/kevin-acee-34-with-scott-and-br/I would love to know what SDSU is bringing to the table. If the Chargers do get a stadium in Mission Valley I hope there is a way for SDSU to keep the fans closer to the field so it doesn't feel like a mausoleum like the Q does.

face it people . Football just is not a winning sport in San Diego. Let it go. You have hockey a better sport in town now. Embrace it.

So now the conversation is going full circle back to Mission Valley? How long will THIS conversation take? Blah, blah, blah. Get it freaking done and stop blowing smoke. Or move on.

Sterk and Hirshman's official position right now is to say nothing. I think the reason is they hope for one of two scenarios. First, that the Chargers just up and leave and if they said that publicly, they would be excoriated like everybody who has said that here has been. Or two, that just as Spanos, Fabiani and the rest of that Dream Team of legal halfwits has finally figured out that they can't get a downtown stadium built, that they will also figure out that the best way to get a new Qualcomm stadium built is to partner with SDSU. And the best way for SDSU to get some signage, SDSU colors and the like is for it to sit back and wait until the Chargers hit desperation time. And unless I miss my bet, desperation time for a new stadium in San Diego is fast approaching. (Not that that bothers me in the slightest.)

It is the height of arrogance for the chargers to point at other (stupid) cities footing 65% of stadium costs and saying "It's only fair you do the same for us."
If an asshole in a lightning bolt costume at a pep rally can emotionally sway voters into a bad deal, obviously more money needs to go to schools because our citizens are f****** stupid.
