Ayton is a 7 foot sophomore at Balboa City, San Diego, averaging 25.2 points, 17.3 rebounds and 4.6 blocks against similar private schools and AAU teams. ESPN ranks him the No. 1 player in the high school class of 2017. ScoutHoops.com goes further, declaring Ayton the best high school player in the United States, regardless of class. Tyrone Hopkins coaches at Horizon Christian Academy — the same school Jones guided to two state titles — and has faced Ayton in summer leagues. He vouches for the 7-footer nailing treys. He admits Ayton defended his best player, a 6-2 guard. “He locked our kid up,” Hopkins admits. “For a 10th-grader, the kid has a total game, right now. The sky’s the limit.” Last August in the Bahamas, Ayton played for a club team against a side that included players from the University of North Carolina. Ayton’s team won with the 7-footer scoring 17 points and hauling down 13 rebounds. hs.utpreps.com/news_article/show/480554

I'll give him 6-10 having played against him in a men's league over the fall, they tend to hype these guys like crazy on their height. However, he's skilled, athletic, has a nice touch out to 20', can handle the rock a little, and when he wants, can take over games. However, unless we produce a final 4 in the next couple years, he's blue blood bound in my opinion.

I hope he really loves it here in San Diego. We'll need some other factors to entice him to want to stay at home

He seems like a great kid . But there is already a battle behind the scenes as to who is his "guardian " Jones or Manning . The blue bloods are definitely aware of his talents , and there will be a battle there . This will get very interesting very quickly and nasty on the recruiting level for the one and done star . There is a very good sized article about him in Wednesday's UT.

Jones is an Aztec. So hopefully, that can help.

Jones is an Aztec. So hopefully, that can help. Are you sure? He coached Jeff Withey and Jared Dudley and both chose bigger conferences to play in. Granted SDSU wasn't at the same level it is now but I don't necessarily think Coach Jones has a ton of love for sdsu over other schools.

Ollie Goulston is also involved, and his lack of love for SDSU is well known. He helped steer Angelo Chol to Arizona and JayDee Luster to NM State (and eventually Wyoming as team captain) when he was coaching at Hoover.

I'm not the biggest fan of Zach Jones OR Ollie Goulston. I played AAU ball with a number of Horizon players, and my high school teammates played for Ollie at High 5 America for the summer sessions, neither of them play the game the right way in my opinion, both pretty shady characters. This Manning seems like more of a "guardian" figure from what he quotes in the article, and I hope Deandre follows his gut with who influences his decisions post high school. I wouldn't want Zach Jones having any influence over my life, that's for sure.

Seems like this kid may have a similar disposition. Would be awesome to have him play here in his adopted home town.

Couldn't agree more, I truly believe that Coach Fish has the players best interest at heart. Can't say the same for the aforementioned guys in the article.

Sounds like from the article that Ayton is very humble and low key. Just the type of guy we would love to have, and if he talks to Fisher we may get the inside track no matter what Big name school is after him. I definitely would give it a good shot because he is worth it!

But it would surely be nice if the kid did come here, even if for only 1 year.

Basketball is big business now , so there is no inside track . do think the Aztec staff does a pretty good job trying to find out who are the key people that help a recruit make their decision but no one really knows until the recruit does make that decision . would help if Ayton runs into some of the current Aztecs around San Diego in the summer and chat about their experience.

The article did say The Aztecs have already made him an offer.

yes we have made an offer as has every other major college MBB program to the #1 rated player for 2017 . Key now is getting to know who are the real key advisors for him that will assist him in making his decision .and what his priorities are for selecting a school . Home work for the SDSU staff .

Was just perusing Rivals & saw that not only is Ayton still the #1 recruit for the 2017 class (surprise surprise), but that his point guard also checks in at #72 (package deal?). Chula Vista Mater Dei's PG Jaylen Hands is rated the #19 prospect on this list as well.
