I know a number of people here disagree, but last night was a good example of the limited impact a defense can have on an opponents 3pt shooting pct. for certain there is an impact, it's just not as much as we'd like there to be. So if someone is draining (especially 3 ft behind the line like last night) then the best you can do is deny them the ball/shot.
And fwiw I doubt they'll have a night like that again in viejas, or get as many whistles.mwc is still ours

They were unconscious from the arc. What impressed was Avila getting 29. It seemed like like our D was sagging on Avila, which gave them extra time from outside. Have to give both teams credit, CSU for hanging on, and SDSU for giving them a scare after being down by 18.

Normally the pressure we put on teams works like body shots in a boxing match. As the fight goes on, the legs get gone(My high school coach will tell us that all the time) They did get tired at the end of the game and we had a chance to win because those crazy shots that we're going in in the 1st half werent falling in The 2nd

Giving up 57% is not going to win you many games! Can't wait to hear the clank of the Viejas rims as both Fresneck and the Aztecs brick 3's and our defensive supremacy is restored...

I thinking 3 point d is a thing over a large sample size, but stuff like what happened last night can happen to the best of defenses.

CSU's guys were feeling it from way outside, Jimmer-like, they can probably score from half court. Our defense can't stop that.

Any team can get hot from 3 for a game. Just like we showed against Air Force.

We gave up 5 3's in first 4 minutes - crazy . gotta give credit to CSU. Many had hands in face D. If that does not happen and has to be admitted that is amazing and rare no matter who the team is we win .

Hitting 6 of 7 contested 3's to start that game showed up in the D's morale as much as the scoreboard. Quinn said it bothered them to defend hard & have the rammies drain those 3's!

CSU had 6 days to prepare. We played them at 5000 ft. after having crazy back-and-forth travel between SD and Denver this week. Advantage: Rams.

Seemed to me that we were a step slower than usual. From our rotations to keeping up on drives to getting up on ball handlers...just a bit slower.
Also, this loss to me highlighted the impact of losing DPIII and of not having him and Shep in at the same time. They're length pushed out opposing points and the ball so far out that other teams couid hardly get their offense even going much less get passes inside or even drive into the key w/ any success. Every brick in the wall matters and DPIII has left a massive hole.
Last thing- I've finally seen enough of Pope to get a good idea of his ability and potential. Defensively he doesn't have the best foot speed to keep up with smaller, traditional size wings. Offensive he'll eat them up but until he learns to better use he's length, he's gonna be a bit of a matador.

He doesn't seem nearly as confident as he is with the ball in his hands.

Fisher always coaches to make them have to take tough 2's. For the most part we did, although watching the game back again today, they got most of their 2's on fast breaks, and got the rest of their points from 3.
Just one of those games, and we still almost won.

No it was not, it was an example of a fluke shooting game, it can happen in every area of the game.

When we beat Jimmer a few years back, we put someone tall and long to defend him from perimeter (Billy White) and it worked. If we had Polee back, we'd have a better chance against the hot outside shooting that CSU has.

Just crazy.

They were hot hitting threes in the first half ,then cooled in the second half . Fisher was more upset about our interior defense . He felt Pope was having difficulties knowing when to double .

Against some teams we can reduce their 3 point shot attempts. We make the shots more difficult. This reduces an opponent's shooting percentage, given enough samples. But in a single game, a team can still make a high percentage of shots, even though they are more difficult. It is a percentage thing. The standard deviation difference between team's defensive 3 point percentages and offensive 3 point percentages is close to the same. So if we can say who is defending makes little difference, then we can also say who is shooting makes little difference. Both do make a difference.

Near the end of the game it was 73-72 , we were at the FT line and in simple terms we did not finish well enough on offense to win the game . Do not have the clutch guy .
