Malik Pope was BY FAR the best player in the game tonight. We lost. It's bad. Getting down 17 is inexcusable. CSU is good. But come on, Malik was bringing the NBA game tonight. Scoring ability above and beyond anyone on either team, by far. And for crying out loud (talking to you Standiego), let's stop the Shrigley bashing. Dude lit it up. I love every singly guy on our team, but at least on offense, Pope and Shriggs kept us in the game. Personally, DA is my favorite player, and AQ is a rock. JJ is smoother than smooth (and had a great game), but Malik is the future. And Matt needs to get some props.

Not much you can do when a team lights it up from the perimeter (12 made 3 pt shots). No moral victory here. CSU was the better team tonight. It does say a lot, however, that the team battled back with Pope's and Shrigley's shooting. O'Brien, who historically has gotten a lot of crap by many on this forum also had a good game. That last make by Avila with O'Brien and Pope in his grill was the back breaker. But hey, it happens. No spilled milk. Move on. It's safe to say that it was Pope's coming out party. He took more shots this game than any game previous. He looked comfortable on offense and his "famed" stroke was on display tonight...every bit the 5 star recruit.
Can't wait! - Bart Scott

When the game is on the line I'd like to see him at center. He has good hands for low post passes and rebounds well, which is what both Chol and Spencer lack. He could also play SF, but Fisher won't allow Shepard to sit. When Pope and O'Brien were both on the floor, good things happened.

how do you not run a play or let the guys that are a combined 15/18 shooting get a shot down the stretch?!

Pope will be a special player when its all set and done. The guy knows how to score from everywhere. For someone that has only literaly played one month of basketball in the last two years.. Wow... I can't wait to see what he will look like in a month from now when he is in shape. Just imagine if Fisher would have but him in 8 minutes earlier in the first half what his stat total would have been. Even the CSU fans where like "wow" when he broke someones ankles and hit the long range step back jumper.

how do you not run a play or let the guys that are a combined 15/18 shooting get a shot down the stretch?! Fisher has no control of his teams during the game. No one on this team knows where to look for guidance down the stretch. We're probably the only team in the ncaa with a "coach in waiting" and to make matters worse he's been that for what seems like 4 seasons. Our head coach and coach and coach in waiting are going to be ex coach and ex coach in waiting when the fan base gets fed up with the lack of preparation.

I saw at least one occasion where Malik was calling for the ball because he was seeing 2 steps ahead but was overlooked. Once everyone has time with Malik it will be showtime. Bummer of it all is Shep should play behind Malik.

Maybe we'll get as lucky as UNLV did when they fired that loser Lon Krueger and hired the hot young BYU assistant Dave Rice.....

Pope reminded me of a young Kevin Durant last night. He just glides around the floor, covering the hardwood in long strides, smooth as silk. Malik made his threes look easy... just popping them in the hole like itty bitty jump shots. Even though it was a tough loss, it was thrill to watch this kid come into his own with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. That is a heck of a game by any standard!

I too thought Mr. Pope and Mr. Shrigley seemed to really have offense going, and I was impressed with CSUs 2 hot hands too.
Even though we might still have lost, there was a potential highlight reel play that got stopped at the top of the lane. With maybe 5 minutes left (somewhere in there cause I had a few beers by then), Mr. Pope, near the top of the key, noticed a lane right down the middle. After very quickly going slightly to his left and down the lane, the ball did get knocked away at the last second. But had he kept the ball, I think he was heading for a monster slam....2 big steps down the center of the lane....and hammer it home.
I know, would'a, could'a, should'a...but still, it is coming.

Sadly for us Aztec fans Pope's scholarship will be available for the 2016-17 season. Enjoy him while we can.

Bummer of it all is Shep should play behind Malik. After tonight Quinn better learn how to dish to the hot hand. He's no X even though he's trying to emulate him. Concur. Missed FTs aside, I thought there were three killer mistakes down the stretch. First, AQ thought he, too, would join the Pope/Shrigs party and jacked up a couple of I'll-advised/worthless treys. Second, as was pointed out, AQ dribbled way too much (burning seconds off the clock) and compounded that mistake by trying to play hero ball. Shoulda been dishing to three guys only: JJ, Pope, and Shrigs. Third, with about a minute left and the Aztecs down by one, Pope had a wide-open look at a trey from the top of the key. Shoulda pulled the trigger the way he was shooting. But he hesitated. The defender closed and then Pope decided to drive the lane, but drove into traffic and got stripped. That was a killer turnover and a display of indecisiveness by a freshman. A blemish on an otherwise stellar nite.
