Besides being poor shooters, we are NOT a quick team. Our press has been far less effective this season than last year. I disagree, as a team we are quick. To be a #3 defensive team you have to be.

We just looked slow, because no human can outrun good ball movement and great outside shooting.
Moving way forward to next year, I think Pope will be the guy next year. His D is lacking and so is his aggressiveness on the glass on the defensive end It's almost like he is unsure of himself still on D, because he looks like a natural on offense from any spot on the court with handles. Players improve the most between their freshman and sophomore seasons. He could dominate due to height, length and range as a 3 and be a stretch 4 and 5 who could also blow past slower guys, if he gains some weight.

Since Chol and Spencer are having a tough time establishing inside game and with Pope and Shrigley ability to stretch the floor, I would love to see the following line-up:
AQ MS MP JO WS
JJ is already playing in the post and this is where he is most effective against a non-athletic player give Aztecs inside O and he is an effective passer out of the post.
By starting Pope, you add length, athleticism, offense, rebounding, and decent defense. Yes, Aztecs will miss Spencer's defensive presence, but I believe Pope gives Aztecs more versatility offensively and defensively. It appears that Aztecs coaching/trainers have brought Pope along at a conservative pace to ensure that his body was ready for playing extended minutes in a game.
Now, its time to find out if Pope can duplicate the game he had against Colorado State. To play well on the "road" in a hostile environment in a competitive game is amazing for Freshman and player who has not played basketball for over tow years! And, it appears that Shrigley play at a consistent level with Pope on the floor.
Hopefully, Shepard can regroup and come to play next game and not get down mentally and emotionally. Tough deal for your so-called team's best player to get benched, but it happens. The remainder of this season is going to be crucial for Shepard. Again, I would place Shepard at the lead guard and give him the mandate to be a distributor, post him up, defend and /offensive game demand that he crash the boards. Trying to work on his jumper is hurting his overall game. Shepard should just let the game come to him and use his 6'8 length to his advantage! Basically, I would encourage him to concentrate on his mid-range game and forgot about the perimeter.

Chol had foul trouble all game. That's probably why he wasn't in there. 4 fouls in 4 minutes of play. He has chronic foul issues - probably his biggest area for improvement, IMO.

Our leadership did not come through, but we will learn from this one. That's the problem, this team lacks leadership. Our supposed leader was benched most of the second half and never returned. We're a team of talented supporting cast players. I'm still hoping that someone who takes the leadership role, can help us finish strong (see Xavier Thames). Oldie Out AQ is that player but should get support from JJ and Shep down the stretch. Shep was in the tank and AQ & JJ had little left in the tank at the end of the game. Time to focus on Fresno State payback. I can't wait to get CSU at home too.

Dakarai has now caught this bug from Chol. Seriously, Chol does commit some very dumb fouls, but I both he and Dakarai for some reason seem to get some BS calls against them. Not sure I understand why. Both are a little more foul prone than they should be, then you throw in 1-2 BS fouls, and our bench shortens very quickly. This has happened in at least 2 recent games, maybe 3.

Agree that half of Dakari's fouls are bogus! Chol, not so sure.

Chol's fouls have been largely legit. With Allen it seems that the officials see the opposing players react to his aggressiveness, length, and constant movement by assuming that DA is out of control and has made contact.

I don't see leadership as an issue anymore, we just played a CSU team who happened to make very tough shots at home on that day, it happens.

Man, this team needs some serious attitude. We lost that, also. Here's a photo of that attitude. Oldie Out
