Shrigley's FG% for the season is 28.2%. Chol is 61.2%. Not sure the relevance of this stat. You're right, Chol should start at guard over Shrigley .

Shrigley actually made a move toward the basket today which was encouraging. I agree with the OP at this point though. Dakari has played his way on to the starting 5. Which is incredible because I saw more than a few posters, before the season started, saying he should transfer. He finishes so well around the rim. Shrigley didn't play great today but I'm encouraged by his play since starting. Whether it's by his own actions or by coaching design, his offensive game has been opened up a bit. Driving to the basket, catching the ball on cuts inside the three point line. It's good to see him become less one dimensional as a player. Defensively he knows where to be, just way too slow to stay in front of anyone driving.

Heck, if Fisher has enough confidence to start him, I'm sure Matt does...

BUT...there's no denying that Dakarai brings an energy level that Shrig, unless he's en fuego from deep, doesn't supply. If he can shoot 35% from deep, I'm all for his starting, but we have to remember, he wasn't a long range guy in high school, maybe we're expecting too much? He is still a value to this squad though, love that he's an aztec.

Shrigley made a couple goofs on defense. I see him going over a screen when he should be going under a screen in then post thus losing his player to a wide open jumper. I am sure he will watch film and learn. It was obvious that he lost confident or was instructed not to shoot because later on in the game he was passing up open 3s and elected to drive to the hoop and tuning the ball over a couple times passing in the post.

The Aztecs do not care who starts, they want to be there at the finish. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Aztecs need some kind of balance to start the game. Dakari has been coming on but even with his recent slashing to the basket his offensive game is still a work in progress. Shrigs is streaky but at least he presents the threat of making an outside shot. If Allen starts Aqeel Quinn is the only outside threat, and with Spencer and Allen on the floor at the same time it's basically 3 on 5 at the offensive end. This is why we see Fish sub in pairs, Chol replaces Spencer and Allen subs in for Shrigs, we trade offense for defense at different positions. I hope it's left as is.
The one that perplexes me is why Malik Pope doesn't more minutes. He has a freaky skill set and is looking more and more comfortable, he a matchup nightmare nearly anywhere on the court.

MS has had an over abundance of opportunities this year and last year . His defense is very slow to react against quick guards. He makes the same mistakes on screens that Zabo made but Zabo does not get PT and MS gets almost 20 minutes per game . If he was not the local hero from LCC ,would there the saving grace for him . AQ takes enough shots for both the guards . Allen , Pope , Kell , even a true PG provide better balance for the team . We are what we are , a very athletic team that plays best when we involve the guys going to the basket not just guys trying to set up their outside shot . only getting 4 FT , is not working to create your shot . I would prefer the opportunities inside rather then MS's . He has hit his peak with 3 or 4 games of shooting over 40 % . Has Pope , Allen , Kell , Williams , Zabo ? they are the future if they get the opportunity to play . Can you imagine Pope with 20 minutes of PT or even the others. Not saying kick him off the team but he should not be getting the PT he is getting . If he was not a Fisher favorite he would not .

I trust fish will limit Shrigleys minutes if he doesn't show an offensive pulse soon. If he can't hit an open shot he doesn't really do anything else to justify the minutes he's getting.

I agree with the "continue to start Matt" camp. I think other teams perceive Matt as our best outside shooter and feel compelled to devote resources to guard him, especially because of his freaky quick release on the catch and shoot. This tends to create lanes in the opposing defense. Matt draining an early three can establish this tone for the rest of a game. I think that's why he shoots a lot early. Because of his quick release, his open shots may look a little less open than they truly are for Matt. In theory I'd be happy for Matt to drain an early three and not have an open shot the rest of the game because that would mean the opposing defense may be over-committing to him. When and if Matt does get hot, it's gravy. This is why I like Matt starting. His defense has been improving with time.
By the way, Dakarai has been my favorite player this season.

One thing people are forgetting to mention is how our bench has been out scoring the opponent by a pretty wide margin ever since Shrigley was placed into the starting line up(62-21) If we learned anything from Polee this year is that some players just play better coming off of the bench. DA is allowed to play with so much energy, he's our spark plug off the bench right now
Just because Usain Bolt can run the 100 yard dash faster then anybody in the world, that doesn't mean you can put him in a marathon and expect the same results. Keep short energy guys in short energy guys roles to maximize production.

I would not change the lineup yet because team is 3-0 with Shrigley starting and even though he is not making shots, he does provide a threat of doing so and helps spread the floor.
I do like how Dakarai is staring to take 3's. He needs to do that, you can't have guys on the floor who are scared to shoot. Once he started to get more aggressive offensively, his game really took off.
Clearly Dakarai needs more minutes and some or all of those will come at the expense of Shrigley.

Shrigley is struggling no doubt, he has been poor this season on both ends. He is just shooting 28% from three, and has only 2 FTA while taking 64 shots, simply put that is a huge hindrance. His defense has been just awful, on the ball he gets beat off dribble a bit but he is worst off the ball defender on this team by a lot, he makes big errors on switching off and communication errors where it seems he doesn't know who to guard. I'm not sure if it is rust, a lack of practice time, or what but at some point he either needs to play well or SDSU will need to go another direction in the starting lineup.
Dakarai at times hurts spacing but he makes up for it with his suffocating defense, and he is actually one of more intelligent offensive players on the team, he knows his role and does not take dumb shots. One last note is that Shrigley took 1 absolutely awful shot in UNLV game early, he held ball for 1-2 seconds and a guy was all on him, he had already missed a couple of threes and predictably bricked that one. No need to attack Shrigley on a personal level but his game so far this year has been disappointing no doubt.

Maybe I'm not watching the same game as you guys but I'm not seeing this "Horrible" defensive player everybody keeps talking about since being named the starter. He had very good defensive efforts vs NW and Wyo(His man I think scored a total of 11 PTS in those two games) Adams got acouple buckets on him late im the Wyoming game and he that McCaw/Vaughn combo will give anybody terrible when they get hot like that but he hasn't been bad. The flaw I see in his game right now is that he's not hitting his open 3's. That's his role on the team and he's not doing that. I wouldn't panic though, he will get better

Just an observation/opinion...
If Shrigley was actually as bad on defense as many in here seem to think, do you seriously think there would be any chance in hell that Fisher would be starting him? I think it's fairly well known that Fish is a "D First!" coach... if you aren't playing sound defense, you don't start. Period. That's what lost Kell his starting job more than the spotty shooting and turnovers.

I've often wondered. I know D'Erryl Williams and Dakarai Allen were recruited as a package deal, but which was the player they were really after?
