from San Diego. He's only played basketball for 4 years and grew from 6'3" as an 8th grader to 6'9" as a freshman to 6'11" as a sophomore and he's still growing. He's also a bit uncoordinated as he has not grown in to his body yet. However, he's still averaging 19 ppg, 16 rpg, and 7 blocks. Just think what he might do when he gets good. An athletic big guy who plays great defense. Are the Aztecs on this guy yet? hs.utpreps.com/news_article/show/465700

Indeed, if Kentucky or Arizona want him, he's gone.

Let's hope he's a little more put together offensively than Deshawn.

IIRC Deshawn Stephens was cut from his HS team. After that he grew from 6' 2" to 6' 8" and played for Santa Monica CC. From whence Fish fetched him.
Not the same as an HS soph that has "only" been playing for 4 years.

I was going to assume he was related in some way to Jelani McCoy, a San Diego product (St. Augustine), until I read the article and saw he moved here from Chicago. Good story, I hope he succeeds.

And he was okay at ucla and nothing in the pros (a couple of years from what I remember). That team with Jelani and Darryl Russell on the front line was killer though.

Do think Aztecs should pursue McCoy and the local recruit at Balboa Prep who was rated the #1 HS recruit . Believe Arizona had two other guards that they selected so no longer were after Kell .

It appears that one of these days Fish & Dutch & Hutson/Shelton/Velasquez need to hop a flight to Chicago for a meeting with his Mom. She clearly has the most influence on where her son lives/plays and should have the opportunity---on a continuing basis---to get know the SDSU coaches well.

Not sure if the Aztecs can have contact with McCoy's mom if he is still a sophomore . Do know the coaches do talk with the families of potential recruits. Would be nice if he attended a game on campus or came for a visit. Have not heard much about if there is a solid connection between the staff at state and Balboa Prep , who seem to have a lot of quality players ,including the #1 rated 2017 recruit.
Pope visited Kansas with Oubre . The Jayhawks chose Oubre , then Pope selected the Aztecs .
