1992 Sophomore Marshall Faulk was second in the Heisman voting behind Miami QB Gino Torretta. Faulk 265 carries for 1,630 yards 6.2 yards per carry and 15 rushing TDs.
Donnel Pumphrey in his Sophomore season, 255 carries for 1,755 yards 6.9 yards per carry with 19 rushing TDs. pumphs didn't even get an All-American node.

Faulk did his carries against much better competition that season: SC and UCLA right out of the gate and then had a national bullseye on him the rest of the season.
Pump's good stuff, but let's keep it in perspective.

Just the younger generation. That's all. The ones who also don't remember our horrible hoops teams of the past and an empty Peterson and Cox.

Pump's good stuff, but let's keep it in perspective. In 1992, USC went 6-5-1, lost four of its last five, and fired Larry Smith at the end of the season. UCLA went 6-5, finished eighth in the Pac-10, and missed a bowl game.

The eye test showed Faulk was better. Bigger than Pump and was shifty... could plant his foot and cut on you (like Pump does), but could also dance around you and even run through you sometimes. Pump is awesome but I don't think he's Faulk good

Marshall had the ability to catch on a sprint and cut like no other. Different style of running back. Best I have ever seen in college.
Pumph is awesome, just not Marshall.

I knew Faulk was for real when he ran around some great Miami, Fl., defenses during a home & home in the 90's. If Pumph was 25-30 lbs heavier, he'd be the Heisman front runner next year. Pumph is more like Hillman than Faulk. Better than Ronnie, a step below Faulk.

The OP needs to remember that Faulk is a legend to Aztec fans. As such his yards were longer and the competition tougher. He played every game in the snow, every linebacker was 9 feet tall, and somewhere between 700,000 and 4,000,000 people attended every game.

Adam, Pump is a great running back but there is really no comparision with him and Faulk. No shame in saying that.
Many times one step after Faulk took the hand off, no matter where he was on the field, you could tell he was going to score. Faulk was just a special back, much like Barry Sanders. I never saw Gale Sayers live but have heard he was similar and just because I never saw it live doesn't mean it's not true. If you had seen Faulk when he was an Aztec you would understand.

He played every game in the snow, every linebacker was 9 feet tall, and somewhere between 700,000 and 4,000,000 people attended every game. Simply not true. Faulk was the real deal, and everyone who saw him in college knew it immediately (except Lee Corso.) Faulk was special. He knew the game inside and out, backward and forward. He was an excellent receiver. He could go short or go long (80 yd. sideline route bomb against BYU, anyone?) Could've been an All-America safety had he wanted. The thing that most impressed me about Faulk was his speed. I used to run track and was on a team that won a couple of CIF Championships. I was a distance runner, but would love to stand on the infield and watch the 100-yd. dash (yes, I ran just before they converted everything to metric.) At the CIF S. Calif. meet, there were 10 guys in the finals of the 100-yd. dash. Three went on to run in the Olympics and another 3 played in the NFL. There's fast, and then there's world-class fast. Most people don't know the difference. Pumphrey is fast. Hillman is fast. Faulk was world-class fast. There's a huge difference. Dude could've run track had he wanted and could've certainly been an Olympian. He was world-class fast. And remember, he lost a half-step after he blew his knee out in the Fresno St. game and had to have major reconstructive surgery (which was kept hush-hush.) People on this board were saying the same thing about Hillman a couple years ago. Who's better Hillman or Faulk? Well, there's a reason Faulk went on to have his career in the NFL and Hillman has gone on to have his. Pumphrey's a fine back, but he's no Faulk.

The better debate would be who's better between Ronnie Hillman and DJ(I think Ronnie was the better RB for what it's worth) Marshall Faulk is a legend, guys like Ronnie and DJ are great players...There's a difference
