I am about to write AD Sterk a WTF message about the two home games not yet scheduled OOC. Do any of you serious posters have any insight or questions? My premise is that with UW and PSU on the road, we'd need two fairly assured home victories to get us to at least 2-2 going into conference. But, you'd think that if Cal Poly or New Mexico State or So. Utah were available, that would be booked and announced by now. So, what is up? Something unusual like the trade that resulted in the @notre Dame opportunity that arose suddenly back in 2010? Your thoughts?

Those 2 games will almost certainly be filled with an FCS team and a low-ranking FBS team. I don't see any reason to worry about it.

My guess is one will be a lower level team and we are still shopping for a middle of the road team to take a home game. (Army or Louisiana Tech, someone like that) |

With UAB shutting its program down, the OOC teams they were scheduled to play will need to find a replacement.
Here is what they had scheduled:
9/5 - @ Tennessee
9/12 - vs Georgia St
9/19 - vs South Alabama
9/26 - @ Troy
Here is what we have scheduled so far:
9/5 - Open
9/12 - @ Cal
9/19 - Open
9/26 - @ Penn St
Give South Alabama a call and invite them out for the 19th and then pick up a FCS game for the opener.

We play at Cal next year, not UW Thank you for that correction, I indeed know better. The supposed collapse of UAB does open that possibility with South Alabama. Bet there is something going in behind the scenes or we would have booked the FCS teams by now. |

I'm sure you're aware why 1 of the slots is open - San Jose St was scheduled but when they moved to our conference we had to replace them. I don't know all the details but I do know we've had 1 or 2 contracts on the verge of being signed only to have them pull out at the last minute. And I also know the dept (Wicker) is working daily on filling the spots and is in negotiations. I agree with you that with 2 really hard P5 road games we need a couple softer home games, but many of the teams you reference are already booked. It's also important to find someone we don't have to overpay to schedule. I'm sure they'll have something in the next few weeks (knock on wood). |

I heard a little more about this today from a top source. Yes, they had something all set to go and the opponent bailed at the last minute.

SDSU needs to find and sign a home-and-home with any power conference bottom feeder....an Indiana, a Washington State (again), Vanderbilt, Kansas, etc. Some team the Aztecs could realistically (on paper at least) be victorious over.
Note: Cal was one such bottom-feeder when the home-and-home was made, but I'm more than a tad nervous about it now with the Golden Bears improving from "suck" to "mediocre". Should be a good 2 games against Cal these next 2 seasons

Yes the answer would be Colorado, Kansas, Purdue, *Michigan and practically anyone from the ACC other than FSU and Clemson. Vanderbilt could be a potential from the SEC.

Also we play Hawaii on the road next year so we could have an extra home game if we wanted and can fill up 3 spots on the schedule. But it sounds like SDSU won't take advantage of that rule next year.

It was more like 2007 because the game was scheduled for September 2008, and my family and I went to that game in South Bend. Just because they have a couple of openings in the schedule don't get uptight. Sometimes working out the details with teams takes some time, and may be they can't find a team with an opening who wants to play us. Or, they may want us to visit them instead of coming here. The school has until May/June to make a final decision usually, so it's no big deal. |

Can SDSU schedule all of its OOC schedule or have to get their MW schedule first , so they know open dates ?

They know all their conference opponents a few years in advance, and the general time frame for conference games is also known. Most know OOC games get played in late August/early Sept, but they can work with the conference to move them around if necessary. For instance, USC/Stanford always play ND late, so they & the P12 work their byes around that. It helps that ND is independent. I'm sure we'll typically assume the first 4 weeks will be NC games & therefore when booking we target an opponent for a specific date. If something can't be worked out (e.g. if we only have weekend #3 & #4 available & we can't find a school to fit those dates) then we can work with within the conference to juggle specific dates & maybe find a bye date during the season for that 4th NC. Getting the opponents is the bigger problem; finding dates usually can be done. |
