Johnson was player of the tournament , great player in the game against us , as the top players make plays all over the court but did you notice his stats 4 of 14 FG 29% , but 9 of 10 FT , 9 rebs , 3 steals Jefferson 5 of 13 FG 38% , 4 of 5 FT, 6 rebs , 3 blocks.

There are quite a few reasons we lost, FT shooting was one of them. I agree with the overall sentiment of the OP. We are really good in basketball but have a ceiling this year, that could change in a couple of seasons. I can overlook the poor FT shooting, although it was a main factor for the loss. However when you go back to our Sweet 16 play against them and last night, there's a pattern. We make unforced errors towards the end. I don't know if it's fatigue or failure under pressure. If it's the former, use a 10 man rotation. If it's the latter, get a shrink.

I agree with the OP as well. We are at the threshold of elite, and the road ahead looks very, very bright.
On the one hand, I keep struggling with the difficult notion of "ANOTHER single digit loss to arizona." Yet, on the other hand, it was "another SINGLE DIGIT loss to arizona." They truly are a great team--a west coast program we can respect and strive to be like, and I sincerely hope we get to see them again in LA in March. There does seem to be some mental aspect they have over us which I believe will make our breakthrough in this budding rivalry all the more sweet when it finally does happen (and likely all the more significant too, ie taking us to the next level of an Elite Eight or Final Four).
Nothing but pride and excitement for our team!
Go Aztecs, -BRB

I think FT shooting will improve, over the next couple of years, before Fisher had to make choice of athletes or shooters, he choose the first and then we went to versatile athletes, now we are getting versatile athletes that can also shoot.

With everybody else our guys are masters at closing out games hence that 124 game streak.

3 things we need to do, 1) hit free throws 2) rebound 3) close games.

I cannot agree that Arizona is ELITE and San Diego State is not. I believe that Arizona has been fortunate to win a few close games against San Diego State. If San Diego State wins last season Sweet Sixteen game, basketball program would have reached a new milestone as an Elite Eight and potentially a Final Four team. So, the Sweet Sixteen game was a tough game to lose.
In my humble opinion, I believe that San Diego State is on equal par with Arizona. Lest we easily forget, San Diego State went on the road to Arizona and ended their 22 game home winning streak; When Arizona played San Diego State at Viejas, they lost by double- digits; and in their last four meetings, Arizona has not been able to beat San Diego State by double-digits
However, I believe this year's team is under a lot of pressure to maintain the prestigious level of basketball San Diego State enjoys today. Now, winning a Conference or Tournament Championship is expected; Advancing to the NCAA Tournament and winning a game is expected; and Advancing to the Sweet Sixteen is expected. This year's team and teams that follow will be expected to surpass Sweet Sixteen, and that my friend is a lot of PRESSURE!
This year's team is good. Any player can miss a FT or miss a few shots. My concern about this team is their inability to create for their teammates and make their teammates better. Team is too good and disciplined offensively to have more turnovers than assists. It seems to me that players are bent on trying to create their own shot as the shot clock is winding down. And, no low post game is going to force teams to play ZONE if San Diego State cannot shoot the ball consistently from the outside.
Again, this team is under a lot of pressure to exceed expectations that have been placed upon them by the Basketball World and AztecMesa!

I have watched a lot of college basketball the past couple of weeks. It seems to me that the Aztecs are much quicker than almost every other team in the country. Their problems in the transition game will be corrected very soon. The Aztecs are an elite team when you compare them with who else is out there. Arizona is also an elite team who will just get better as the season plays out.

Kentucky is way better than anybody. Zona is real good. We're real good. Another 10-12 teams in the mix for final four. Kentucky is on another level. Watching them absolutely slaughter Kansas last week reminded me of some of the mighty teams of the 1980s and 1990s (Duke, Michigan, UNLV, and Arizona, btw) that would lose like one game all year and blow most teams out by 30 points.
Zona has been a NC contender again for a couple of seasons, thanks to Miller's insane recruiting. We handled them while Miller was getting started, but he's recruited very impressively since then. They also have the legacy as a top 10 all time program. The last four losses to them have been hear-breaking, but not really surprising. For me, the most painful was the year before last when Chase Tapley's wide open layup to win at the buzzer was swatted by that smug f^&$er Nick Johnson.
