Can I just say I'm sick of the complaining?
How about cheering for your team instead of complaining about them?
How about understanding the freaking context? Our football and basketball teams spent DECADES as laughingstocks. And now? Basketball is in the top 20 teams EVERY SEASON and football, while not 10-2, is competitive and fun to watch.
We have tons to celebrate and get excited about. Today's players need today's fans to be on their side. When the big play comes late in the game they need to turn around and see fans making noise, on their feet, excited... not a bunch of people sitting on their hands or heading for the exits. (Literally, I don't even know why these folks come to games at all. Go get drunk somewhere else.)
But this [all San Diego sports] thing that we only get excited if a team is white hot and bitch and moan is teams are anything but perfect... it's time we shut that down and allow a new history of SDSU emerge.

My challenge to fans and alumni who have been around for a while? Open your minds and hearts to SDSUs new identity.
State isn't perfect. No school is. But it is also a great place. We have a lot to be proud of. My hope is that we'll start reflecting that as well.
And you know what? Things are even better in 2014!
It's time we expect our fans to be fans, to cheer for the home team, and to couch our complaints... making a choice to get behind teams and players... and stop questioning every coaches decision or damning 18 year olds for being 18 year olds ad nauseam.
It's flat out embarrassing to bring brand new Aztec fans to their very first games, super excited and ready to jump on board, and have them listen to a bunch of Negative Nancy's. I'm tired of apologizing for our fans... I'll post here what I tell them, "SDSU needs new fans, get on the bandwagon, and ignore these bozos."
- An Aztec fan heckled Winston Shepherd during game 1 of the regular season. "You're terrible. Get off the court." I turned around and reminded this fan that he's also ranked as a top 100 college basketball player and maybe he should cheer for his team and not against his own team.
- There is a general gripe on this forum that Rocky Long should be fired. Yes, the winningest coach in our conference, a coach who has yet to have a year without a bowl appearance, who lead our team to a conference championship last season, and is the 3rd winningest coaching in school history should be fired? Geniuses.
- On Saturday, a yahoo behind me spent half the game telling his buddy that our basketball team had "no chance" of making it to the NCAA tournament. Based on the shooting percentage against Bakersfield? So the most talented team we've ever fielded in the history of the program is "terrible" because their defense is nearly perfect while their offense hasn't yet come together? Maybe... just maybe... it's too early to tell. And maybe... just maybe... he doesn't know what he's talking about.
- The same fan went on and on about how this Aztec football team is "terrible" and the worst he'd seen in years. He's had season football tickets for 25 years and this is one of the worst. He did not like when I turned around and reminded him that he didn't attend a single home football game in the 2008 season, when we really were terrible, no fight whatsoever. And in 2009, as Brady Hoke was bringing the Aztecs back to life, he wasn't there until the end of the season... wearing USC gear. That season the field level on the home side often had 200-300 fans in the second half, we know who was and wasn't there because we high-fived each other. He wasn't even there. So how would he know?
- I don't know (or care) what has happened in the past or how many years you've been a season ticket holder. But any time the game is close all I hear at games from our fans is "Oh no, here we go again." I've seen fans leave games when it gets close because they care more about their freaking parking spot than they do about making noise and helping their team win. I've seen fans sit down and refuse to cheer because "they can't watch this again." Dude, it's a self-fulfilling prophesy. We stop them on a key 4th down in the 4th quarter, you turn around to high five someone... and people aren't even cheering! You've got to be kidding me...

Simply put: The SDSU I often read about here on the forums, marked by a "whoa is me/sky is falling" and small school chip, is just not the SDSU I experience when I walk around campus.
