Is he our next JJO-type player (meant entirely as a complement)? We all know his shot will come around at some point (not really concerned about that).
Not gonna wow you with off-the-charts athleticism, but a smart player (doesn't get rattled) that potentially does a lot of little things that just don't show up in the box score?
He may very well be our 'glue' guy for the next 1, 2 or 3 years. Every team needs one...

He is going to be a good player but it is clear he is struggling as a freshman with the jump in competition. It is easy to forget how hard it is to go from playing HS players to Division I college players. A lot of what I am seeing with Kell is him learning on the job, it isn't an easy jump to make.

I agree and disagree. Trey hasn't turned the ball over but he hasn't been good from the outside and hasn't attacked like Zabo. Honestly. I like Zabo better in the roll of a starter. perhaps Fish should switch it up and let Trey come off the bench? Both Trey and Kevin play with maturity. We like that.
Fish becomes a creature of habit, it's time to 'test' and 'optimize' line ups. I'd also have D. Polee come off the bench to add energy. I think he's putting too much pressure on himself to score.
Have Malik Pope and Zabo start, run DP and Kell off the bench against BYU. You heard it here.

When I envision the Aztecs as a final 4 team this year it is a team with Trey Kell as PG. He may not be the best choice now but is the best choice in the long run for the season.

He's a shooting guard, who just happens to be our best option at PG according to the staff. Speaks more to the level of our point guard des parity than anything else. Zabo/hemsley are the points of the future

Do you think Willams has a shot to get back? Can't see why Kell is better at this time

Agreed, but Kell is a shooter, and I'm not saying Hemsley isn't, but Trey is, in my opinion, more suited for the 2 as opposed to running an offense. He's a scorer, he needs plays ran for him, not to be the one creating for an offense.

Trey will pick up his shot and become more confident with the ball. Dude's only played three college games in which he was under tremendous pressure. He'll be awesome for us. Count on it.

Oh no doubt, the guy is gonna be a stud. I just feel like we're forcing the issue with him at PG, he's a natural shooting guard, just biding our time until a better option comes along and he can slide back to his natural 2 guard position

Kell has 3 Turnovers in 70 minutes as a freshman starting PG for a top 20 team. Who cares that he is 2-16 from the field? We know the kid can and will shoot a high %. He has the basketball IQ to run a team and will only get better as he becomes more comfortable.

I think Kell has performed admirably, i.e. 3 TOs in 70 minutes... I just think, from my own uninformed basketball fan perspective, that Zabo is a natural playmaker and leader that can run an offense that will be stagnant at times (as we've already seen). Kell is obviously going to be a big part of our team over the next few years, but I think he fits more of a 6-man or off guard role. With so many wings that can't produce for themselves (or at least that we've seen thus far), Zabo's upside becomes really important to develop sooner than later. Of course, Malik could come in and find an offensive rhythm, and if so, Kell could run the point and be free to roam on offense more so than if he's trying to create. My thought is that we really need a primary PG who is going to make things happen for our other, talented players who can't always make it happen off the dribble/drive/pick, and Zabo pushes more than Kell. With a healthy progression over the OOC, Kell could become a great offensive piece playing most of his time off ball and Zabo could be running the team in large spurts averaging 5-6 assists per game.

Against BYU we will see a very tightly packed zone. Polee finding his shot and Kell hitting a couple is important. Quinn and Pope may see more time to counter zone defenses.

You are delusional at best if you think pope should start. He is a tremendous talent, but he is coming off a major injury and played part of a game against Bakersfield.

The ravenous wolves of this board already seeking to judge a highly recruited freshmen who has played just three games.
When was the last time Fisher started a freshmen at point guard in the first game?

Kell was a great player at prep level. I'm sure his game was incomplete as a freshman in H.S., but I suspect by the time he was a sophomore his game was much better. I predict we'll be singing his praises by the time March Madness begins.

I see him more as a Tapley type of player for us, which isn't bad at all. Zabo has shown improvement in each game and he is starting to gain a bit of confidence. He is a prototypical PG. Kell is best suited as a 2 and with a team struggling from outside I'd really like to put him there. AQ, is also a 2 but I'd prefer him over Kell at PG just because of his experience.I don't know why Williams isn't getting time at PG.

According to Ziegler, Pope may not even play in Maui: Freshman Malik Pope made his much-anticipated debut, getting a standing ovation from the Viejas crowd when he checked in for the first time. There’s a chance we might not see him again until mid-December, or least not with heavy minutes.
The Aztecs coaches looked at the schedule, with the potential for three tough opponents in Maui on the immediate horizon followed by games against USD and at Washington, and figured it was now or December. Fisher said Pope will suit up in Maui and beyond but made no promises that he would play. www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/nov/21/sdsu-basketball-3-thoughts-bakersfield/2/?#article-copy
