Habemus Papam! He was clearly rusty, and probably had a few first game jitters, but there were definitely flashes of the skills that should serve him well once he hits his stride. Towards the end of the pregame warmups, I noticed he was working on his 3 point shots all around the left side of the arc... while I was watching, he was 7 for 10. Once he shakes the rust off, he should be fine. I must have seen the 3 shots he missed then. He was clearly lost on defense, especially early and you could tell he was thinking more than reacting on offense. Exactly what you would expect from being out of the game so long. He did make his two free throws and it looks like he knows how to shoot those. Good to get him minutes, though. I don't think we will see a lot of him against YBU. I was surprised that he played in the second half. I thought Fisher would want to see how his body reacted playing a decent portion of the first half given Fisher's desire to bring him along slowly. I'm sure he and the trainers will be taking a long look at how he is feeling today. I am really hopeful we can get him up to speed during conference, we need more offensive production up front.

You could tell he was rusty but who wouldn't be after not playing for 2 years. But his Euro step (although he missed the shot) for a 6'10 guy was impressive.

He looked a bit slow and rusty to me as well, like he was trying to get used to game speed, which is about as much as should expect. He flashed to me too though, he has excellent length and really causes problems for opponents as an on ball defender. Also blocked a couple without much effort. Once he gets comfortable out there, I really think he'll be lighting it up for us on the offensive end. He missed his two threes, but his jumper looked good, especially on the two pointer that went down. That Euro step in the lane was niceeeeeee too, even though he didn't convert.
EDIT: one other thing I liked were the couple times that he set up down in the post, he's a thin guy but he looked good as a post player. His length alone down there should get him some easy baskets, I think they'll try to get a perimeter player on him then post him up to get some mismatches.

A lot of potential , but as noted , rusty , coach said afterward that it takes time for most guys to learn the D . Will bring him along slowly , be patient and remember he is a freshman that has not played in a while . Also that he has not played against many teams that have the talent he will face at MAUI ,or the size , it is an adjustment .

The kid got out there and didn't appear once to be protecting his leg. Once he gets the rock, he's aggressive with the ball. He'll be a big time scorer for us. What I didn't expect was his defense at the rim. No easy layups with he and Sky out there.

Pope was definitely nervous coming into the game in the first half. But once he broke a sweat he really looked legit. He had his hands on everything on both ends in the second half. He was very comfortable in the post looking around for the open man. Euro step was nice. He looked like our best player. Once Shrigley is back and they can play some inside-out we will finally have some offense.

Am I the only one who wanted to see The Pope on TV tonight to stretch the floor? We're gonna get zoned, can Pope be a short term solution?
