Aqueel Quinn helped lead Leuzinger HS to the California Southern Section Division 1-A championship in 2009-10. He scored 13 points as Leuzinger raced to a convincing 58-39 victory over Santa Monica High School in the CIF championship contest. AQ earned first team All-Bay League and first team All-CIF Southern Section Division 1-A honors, his HS teammate Delon Wright (Utah) younger brother of Portland Trailblazer, Dorell Wright was his best friend. The two of the met in 9th grade on the Leuzinger track.
AQ went on to play at CSUN and his friend, Delon attended CCSF but was recruited by Udub, Wazzu among other P5 schools and then signed with the University of Utah. Today they played together but in different jerseys. AQ had 6 points, Delon 7, but Aqueel's Aztecs won.
The story goes, after two years at CSUN, AQ called Steve Fisher and told him he wanted to walk-on at SDSU. Coach Fisher told AQ he thought it was a bad idea to walk away from a scholarship and playing at Northridge under coach Bobby Braswell. Fisher told AQ he had no scholarships left and couldn't guarantee he would make the Aztecs team and if he made the squad, he couldn't guarantee any play time. AQ told him, coach I'll see you for summer session!
The rest is history, he walked-on, got play time, was part of a MWC Championship, the Sweet 16 and this year a top 20 ranking. Last Friday night he lead the Aztecs in scoring against his old Matador team with 17 points. His previous high was 17 while at CSUN versus Pepperdine and today AQ had 4 steals against Utah, his previous high 3 against Long Beach at Northridge. He has more personal bests to break, but I believe he has accomplished his personal goal.
AQ has a good heart and once said poverty would be one thing he would change if he had the opportunity ...His greatest hero is his mom. She worked a few jobs to pay for his tuition at SDSU before he earned his scholarship.
It's two games into a Cinderella season for AQ and I couldn't be happier for this kid! Well done Aqueel. Well done.

Love AQ. It is toss up for me whether he or DPII are my favorites on this year's team. I think I just call them tied for first and move on. Chol is growing on me too.

AQ played 30 minutes and did a defensive number on his best friend. Congratulations on winning the bragging rights yesterday. I hope that he remembers to remind DW occasionally.

Forget basketball. The way his mother raised him with that mindset will carry him far in life. Most people are content with average and are afraid of risking what they currently have to chase their dreams. AQ was one of the rare few who never let the limitations others put on him, including Fisher initially, to sway his vision. These type of men and women become our future leaders.

Well done. Excellent story! Thanks for sharing. AQ's hard work paid off with Fisher rewarding him a scholarship instead of giving it to Stanley Johnson who transferred to Arizona. I commend Fisher for doing what he did. It certainly was a class act. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision.

I must admit, I havent been too hot on AQ during the offseason and thought he wouldn't get much PT this year. He totally proved me wrong and looks like a MUCH improved player so far. He was solid last year and his shots would often go in, but he had an ugly release and the rotation was sideways... he's totally fixed both of those issues and he looks slimmer and quicker this year. He's going to help us a LOT this season

3 step, Three for the tie. Not a well officiated game. The calls went against us in the first half, for us in the second.

AQ is a stud..
By the way AQ never spoke to coach fisher about coming to SDSU prior to Transfering. He know coach Hut but didn't speak to coach fisher until tryouts.

According to the 1090 interview with Steve Fisher, AQ spoke to Fish who told home to stay at CSUN. Anyway, AQ is a success story. I don't need to debate your ass when we have players. If you call me a lair, you're saying Fish lied. Either way we need AQ. Dude balled tonight.

I feel like I just heard Fish talk in a post game press conference about how he didn't know AQ when he came here and AQ had only talked to coach Hut. I'll look it up.

The TV announcers talked about the AQ story . More important then if Fisher knew him or not is the support he received from his mother to let him walk on at SDSU . Also the scholarship Fisher rewarded him with this year , when he could have given it to Ryan Anderson , who is red shirting at Arizona this year , then playing next year . Sometimes coaches do what they consider to be the "right thing" . Sure hope AQ's mother was able to see him play last night and thank her for supporting her son , paying his tuition the red shirt year and also allowing AQ do what he felt was right . Thank you
