Well, consistent with what you say, THE major fail was this staff's not getting anyone except a grayshirt freshman as the understudy to Quinn Kaehler, a guy who had already had surgery on his elbow. If SDSU is going to have a shot at gaining B12 admission when that conference gets around to expanding - which is a when, not an if - the school simply can't afford that magnitude of error. But at the risk of incurring the wrath of Rocky and Friends, am I the only one who's a bit concerned about only having Bawden as a possible understudy next season too? Gaining B12 admission is about providing the B12 more money, not QB's. We could go 6-6 year in & out, but if we bring the TV ratings & market that's what's important. Once in SDSU will attract a completely different type of athlete at QB than we will in the MWC. There definitely should have been a bridge between QK & Bawden, but Bawden as a SO should be a completely different animal than the one who faced FSU in his first career start & was a deer in headlights. The game slows down with every bit of experience, and he's had a taste now. I'd bet if we went in there TODAY with Bawdin at QB we win, assuming even a couple fewer blown calls. With Ruffin, even more so. Bawden should be a RS this year; the fact he's not actually says something good about him.

But at the risk of incurring the wrath of Rocky and Friends, am I the only one who's a bit concerned about only having Bawden as a possible understudy next season too?As to Saturday's game, it is indeed huge. As you say, Andre, if we win, we're in the driver's seat to win the West division and play for the conference title. However, if we lose, we can pretty much forget about that and plan on playing another Sun Belt team in the N.O. Bowl as most pundits are now predicting. Go Aztecs! my feelings ecxactly I am going to be apoplectic if we repeat the QB scenari . I think we will be in the Ponto against Navy even if we go 7-5. WE do not have the issue of repeating the same bowl. It will outdraw any other matchup. Totally on target! ! ! ! No, you are not the only one wondering why in year six of a fairly serious resurgence, we have not been able to recruit better. Better, at least, at the crucial QB position. I'm afraid too many fans are willing to keep waiting, waiting 'till next year when so-and-so will be eligible, no doubt the second coming of Don Shy or Brian Sipe. Well, maybe 2015 WILL be the big year. Since we will be playing away games at an improving Cal and a pretty good Penn State, please forgive me if I am not totally convinced. Here's the thing. We cannot wait 10 or 15 years for a program to develop to the level of a fourth or fifth place P5 conference school. Rocky and his staff have done a good job, but a good job isn't what we need. We need a super job. Now, I admit that such a goal may simply not be reachable for SDSU. Finishing 3rd or 4th in the MWC, sometimes 2nd, may be the best we can hope for. But I won't be willing to say that we have risen as far as we can expect to do given the realities of college football until the kind of coach I and others have been calling for . . . someone who has an outstanding football resume built at the highest level of the game; in other words, the football equivalent of a Steve Fisher . . . has been hired as HC and has been unable to get us where we want to go. (To illustrate the possibility of relatively quick football program turnarounds, I recommend to your attention the cases of Miami of Florida and Kansas State. In the 11 years prior to the arrival of Howard Schnellenberger, the Hurricans averaged 4 wins a year. Schnellenberger's record at Miami was as follows. . . 5-6 9-3 9-2 7-4 11-1 That last year the Hurricanes were national champions. The thing is, it did not take Howard long to go from a losing season to 9 wins and then to a NC. (I might add that Miami did not have the support of a big time conference's TV money helping out. The Hurricanes did not join a conference until 1991. Even more astounding is what Bill Snyder did at Kansas St. You have to study the Wildcats all-time record to appreciate how terrible that school's football program was. . . terrible for generations, not just years! K State had exactly FOUR winning seasons in the 1935-1988 period! In 16 of those years, K State won either ONE or NO games. In the four years before Snyder took charge, K State had won just THREE games! Yet look at his record. 1989 1-10 1990 5-6 1991 7-4 1992 5-6 1993 9-2-1 In the 11 years from 1993 to 2003, Snyder's teams won 109 games for a yearly average of 9.9! ! ! Yes, I know, no two situations are exactly alike. But Miami of FLA and K State were either bad (the former) or downright awful (the latter). Yet, outstanding coaches somehow managed to make those programs regular Top-10 finishers for years. It can be done. Surely we can manage to hire a replacement for Rocky Long who will not find himself so bereft of key talent (i.e., quarterbacks) a half decade after taking over. Or maybe not. In which latter case we will know for sure that where we are is where we will be till the sun cools down. AzWm

It essentially means (IMO) that the division title is on the line in Reno Saturday. We MUST win if we want to represent the West in the CCG. Fresno holds the tiebreaker over us, so if we lose one game the rest of the way (I'm thinking it'll be in Boise), we'll need some help from someone against Fresno (Most likely the Wolf Pack) who can pretty much coast in from here with their remaining schedule. A loss to Nevada also gives them the tiebreaker over us. If that happens then the CSUF/UNR game is meaningless to us since both own the tb over the Aztecs. There is some hope that AFA could pull an upset over Nevada or SJSU over Fresno, but I don't see it happening, and we MUST go 3-1 the rest of the way. Basically, the title is on the line Saturday. Remaining games SDSU@reno @boise AFA SJSU NevadaSDSU @afa @fresno UNLV CSUFWHYoming SJSU @nevada Hawai'i I'll throw SUSU in there as well since the sit in 2nd as I type, but I see them finishing 1-4 the rest of the way SJSUCSU @fresno Hawai'i @usu @sdsu "Losing to Fresno is a major FAIL" is redundant.

You make a great point about Gentry. IIRC, Rocky has known him since he was a little kid and therefore probably suspected we were in the driver's seat. So back to the reasonable discussion... Looking at Texas roster, there are 7 QBs and only one is a SR. While starter is currently a soph. Gentry has a lot of guys to beat out in a crowded roster spot. If he gets antsy over there I wouldn't be surprised if he were a bounce back in a year or two just like Rodriguez, Babiash, or Heyward. This is literally the Fisher model at work. Recruit some guys who are above your current level and have open arms waiting when they want out of their original school.

Kansas State was and is still in the Big 12, that gives it the ability to recruit a lot more premium players then we can. Snyder's formula includes a lot of junior-college players from Texas, Dodge city, and California.(if we did that the screams would reach Saint Don in Heaven. He also did not make a habit of scheduling powerhouses in his out of conference so he would have two or three losses, before entering conference play. As for Howard you got a be kidding me, Miami was in a boom they have lots of big money behind them. We all know that they were fueled by steroids many former players admitted it. They didn't test them at all, and that's why they acted like asses on the field a good deal of the time. Both of those coaches are in the Hall of Fame so just go out and hire a Hall of Fame coach, should be easy. Now the last time I looked several Big Ten teams have not been able to just do what you say is so easy even with a big budget for coach. I don't see Iowa State or Kansas tearing it up either. If you get a coach that good you better be ready to pay him $3 million a year at least. Other than that your plan is flawless.
The way to the top 20 is play a crappy out of conference schedule so that you're guaranteed to have 11 wins or more. When you defeat another team close the gates of mercy, and run up the score. If you want to increase attendance just score 1,000,000 points a game whether your defense is crappy or not.(Baylor) Fresno State was ranked last year and they had only three or four good players. The rest of them were very average as far as the quarterback situation is concerned as long as we're ground and pound we aren't going to get Mr. four-star unless he comes as a bounce back. You're also not going to recruit Haven Moses, Isaac Curtis, or guys of that ilk in quantity at WR either. They want to play on a spread offense. Now if Toledo gets a good enough quarterback which he may have, the team will go 50-50 pass run and you may see us recruit some good quarterbacks. This is not to say that Chapman and Nick don't have the potential to be good quarterbacks. It is always possible as well that Gentry could get beat out at Texas. If he does and Rodriguez is successful guess what, as Rocky likes to say.
Rocky exaggerates with the 15 year nonsense he is right on the verge with five years, now if we could play Kansas and Tulsa instead of California and Penn State on the road, I'd say we would be in the top 20 next year by half season.. If we can win one of those games California or Penn State and win out in conference will be in the top 25 next year. Didn't we beat Wazzu a few years ago?
Being in the top 25 does nothing for you except your ego. Did Fresno State turn their ranking into its greatest recruiting year, No. Did all those years of winning under Peterson result in Boise being invincible in conference, No. If it wasn't so devastating for basketball and the rest of our teams, it would be better to be independent and play crap teams. Remember when BYU was ranked 18th a few weeks ago.

no doubt the second coming of Don Shy or Brian Sipe. We have the second coming of Don Shy in Pumphrey this year. Muema and Hillman in prior years. Did you really mean Don Horn?

I think the QB concerns are legitimate. Rodriguez by all accounts will be light years better than our current situation and I think Bawden has the tools to be developed into a good QB but that will probably take some time. So yeh if Rodriguez goes down next year and Bawden hasn't made significant progress we could be back in the same hole as this year. If anyone on this coaching staff has a hot seat it is certainly Sipe. I think Rocky went all in on trying to get Zach Gentry the kid from NM who went to Texas. I like that he's going after some big fish though. Maybe the kid will bounce back here if he doesn't get playing time in the next year or two? The wagon wheels have really fallen off at Texas. They have zero excuse to be as terrible as they currently are. Maybe they should have kept Mack Brown. Here's hoping Gentry ends up as an Aztec.

But the right verbiage from the coaching staff's mouths' can change family's minds about where their kid should play ball! Now with these stipends, will SDSU match what the P5 conferences are giving their foortball & basketball athletes? My guess is only for the 2 biggest sports. Sorry baseball! Sorry soccer teams! Who knows? We shall see....

Can SDSU become a national brand in football as it has in basketball? That's the essential question. All the facts seem to indicate that SDSU is very unlikely to achieve that much sought after goal. It's not impossible, but the odds are very much against us. Not as much against us as they are against New Mexico State, Idaho, Eastern Michigan and several dozen other FBS schools, perhaps, but the odds are very long indeed. I'm afraid that the last school to rise from the depths to the status of a respected program was Boise State, and they may well be on a downward trajectory.
The full impact of the P5 cartel has not yet been felt and will not be for a couple of years. I think we are going to learn that recruiting, and perhaps even scheduling money games at P5 schools will become more and more difficult. As if things were not bad enough already.
Our only chance will come if we can hire a program saving coach such as K State got in Snyder or we got in Coryell. Somebody truly exceptional in every way. I'd say the odds of that happening are below .500, but you never can tell. The scary part is that the odds of replicating the hires of Craft and C. Long are better than the odds of getting a Coryell.
Oh, yes. If we end up running the table and finish the regular season at 9-3, I will rejoice! I'll also rejoice if I can lose those unwanted 25 or 30 pounds in the next few months, too. In fact, I will rejoice if all sorts of wonderful though improbable events take place.

Go 6-6 year in and year out-good luck with TV ratings and market....+ 28

The fact that a crucial conference game . . . a winnable game . . . was lost because we had to rely on a totally untested true freshman QB is a devastating indictment of the program. Yes, we are winning 8.5 games a year. That's great, especially when compared with the previous 11 seasons of futility. But if we are to become more than a pretty good MWC program, we must never again be caught in a situation in which no decent backup QB is available. It would be different if a team were to lose its #1 QB, and the "decent backup" I mentioned gets injured as well.
Even a strong P5 team might have to rely on an rookie QB if it's down to the third string player. But a program that has aspirations greater than the Mountain West Conference has to be able to recruit better than has been the case during the past several years. That's especially true at the QB position. Remember, we are talking about the lack of a decent 2nd string QB. If you are going to have trouble recruiting, it had better not be at the quarterback position.
We have so little margin for error at SDSU. A bad pass leading to an interception kills a golden opportunity . . . ANOTHER golden opportunity . . . to register a meaningful non-conference win. If we had been able to develop a better QB in the first place, that opportunity might well have been taken advantage of. But then, not long after that, with our not-terribly-impressive former walk-on QB out with an injury, we are sabotaged by having absolutely no one ready to step in and do even a half-way decent job. Can someone tell me why I should NOT be frustrated that we had to put a kid just a few months out of high school to lead Aztec football in so important a game?
And this reminds me of something someone posted a few days ago. It did not hit me at the time, but in retrospect it seems significant. Why is it that SDSU, with a QB coach who was an MVP in the NFL, is not able to do better in the recruitment of quality QBs? Please explain that one to me, as well.

AzWm I actually share your frustration about Sipe and the QB situation, but "devastating indictment" is an overreaction. Injuries happen, recruiting gaps can happen. It's certainly not that they haven't targetted good players (Rodriguez and Gentry out of high school) but maybe they're having the same problem Gwynn admitted he had with the baseball program early on. They are trying to recruit out of their league to get that program changing guy but just can't quite entice them over the P5 schools ( or the draft in baseball). Maybe if they lower their sights a tad they'd get more under the radar guys, I don't know. Either way we can agree it's a problem that needs to be fixed.

"devastating indictment" may be too harsh. But if we want to excel (which means finishing winnable games against P5 schools such as Oregon St. in '13 and North Caroline this year) we will need more above average skill players. It seems that we are recruiting pretty well at other positions, which is probably why the Aztec defense has been good.

Need to develop a reputation as a QB school to get quality HS QB's to consider SDSU . We know we are not going to get 4 or 5 * guys coming out HS but need to find direction to compete with the other MW schools that get the top 3 * or transfers . We will see with J .R ,next year plus Bawden or even Chapman. Also if the QB is also a runner or gets rocked by the other team . you better develop 2 guys or more . Spend time during the summer with Kevin O C 7 .

A 3-star recruit at QB might well be our savior. I'm sure that some 3-star rated H.S. seniors are, or will become, as good or better than some given 4 stars initially. It's up to our staff to find those 3-star players who show real promise. Maybe players whose high school teams didn't do much though they personally performed well.
