1. Do you have the coaching chops to know whether or not Rocky can handle both jobs?
2. After that long winded response you ignored the fact that his current, sophomore heavy defense may be the best he's had in his six years manning the DC duties. How do you explain that? Or do you deny the defenses improvement? Which then begs the question of how in the world did he improve the defense if he can't handle both jobs? Could it be just maybe that you are wrong (gasp) and he can handle both?
3. You ignore parts of people's posts when you are caught being wrong. Ohio St.
4. The foundation is as strong as it has ever been. The entire culture has changed. Kids come here to win now, not go to the beach or chase tail. They don't have off the field issues. They get good grades. When's the last time this school had all those things? Cracks in the foundation... Laughable!!
Legitimate criticism is always welcome. Chicken little hyperbole is not. You seem to be the only one who has trouble discussing this topic. Everyone else seems to be able to criticize Rocky without invoking this type of response. Maybe you should look in the mirror for the problem.

God your a broken record when Rocky was head coach the MWC had BYU,Utah and TCU for a little of it. nOne has won at New Mexico consistently except Rocky long "The point is Rocky is not beyond criticism" Nobody has said that and here we go again with making up stuff according to your opinion and calling it a fact. I criticize Rocky quite a bit.The idea that it only takes two years to set up a defense that was full of walk ons and guys you couldn't play very well is absurd. There are a hell of a lot guys over 60 years old who were coaching. Rocky Long is in a hell of a lot better shape than most guys in their 50s. I accept intelligent criticism of Coach Long but I'm not getting it from you. I'm getting that he was only a mediocre coach in a mediocre league completely disregarding the was at a traditionally weakest programs in college football. Schools like New Mexico, UTEP, and several others are graveyards for coaches. You seem to think that recruiting to New Mexico is just a piece of cake. You also seem to forget that we've had a series of different offensive coordinators who have a huge input on who was recruited at quarterback.
Your other lame argument is that anyone who disagrees with you on anything is a Rockette or some other nonsense. You go through Rocky Long's record even as an assistant coach with a fine tooth comb to find weaknesses and then you say, well is not black-and-white. You don't define your terms which is fundamental to any logical discussion you simply state whatever your opinion is without verifying it with facts. Regardless far as to criticize the guy for not having been an assistant on a great football team. The vast majority of coaches have not been assistance on a great football team. One of the things that Rocky says it is really true is that players win games coaches don't. As I said before teams don't go to intent and then suddenly turn into top-ranked teams in a couple years.
of course you simply don't answer questions about whether it's the same to have two extremely top out of conference games and win 10 games, and have two patsies on the schedule and win 10 games. Rocky is not perfect the damn well better make sure there is a backup for Rodriguez.that is the last I have to say about this because the answer a broken record you have to become a broken record yourself.

1. Do you have the coaching chops to know whether or not Rocky can handle both jobs? I'm old enough to know that fatigue sets in a lot quicker as you get older than it did just a decade earlier - but sometimes you don't realize how exhausted you are until you're pretty well burned out. How many head coaches are also their own defensive coordinators? For whatever reason that is far less common than the HC taking on double duty as OC. [/quote] They haven't played anyone really good so far this year. The best team they've faced is Oregon State, and they're a middling Pac 12 team. We don't know how good this defense really is. We're about to find out over the next few weeks, though. And if this defense is so sopomore heavy, what happened to all the juniors and seniors that Rocky recruited? Rocky's been recruiting defense for 6 years now. Like I said, we'll find out over the next few weeks how tough this defense really is. Hopefully you're right and they are better than we saw last year. Yep, we faced exactly one genuinely tough out of conference opponent last year. This year, zero. I forgot that Ohio State was last year. My bad. Even so, the point still stands - our out of conference schedule over the last two years hasn't been all that tough. The foundation is as strong as it has ever been? We've been struggling to beat bad teams over the last two years. We've lost to bad or lesser teams over the last two years. The results contradict what you're saying. Bottom line? I want to see the Aztecs win all of their remaining games and turn this season from a disappointment into a rousing success. If they beat both Nevada and Boise and don't have any lapses against the lesser teams like Idaho then I will be willing to admit that I may have been wrong about Rocky.

You could have just responded no to #1, I don't know why you think taking your life experience and applying to all old people is appropriate or logical. Plus we have a living fossil running one of the premier basketball teams in the country here as well. A reminder that age is clearly not an issue in the coaching profession. So your age argument is unfounded and pure speculation on your part.
When recruiting improves over time you eventually see young guys playing over older ones. We are seeing that right now. It is in itself a sign of improvement when young talent without experience is still better than the experienced guys and winds up getting to start. Guys like Munson and Barrett are already getting all conference praise. I am genuinely excited to see how much better these guys can become and that does not make me a Rockette. It makes me a guy who is paying attention.
Your analysis of what makes a tough non conference opponent is also subjective. Oregon State last year was still better than just about everyone in our league. We all agree though that QB issues have cost us those games the last 2 years. Coaches couldn't know that Dingwell would implode that badly after playing well the year before. But they fixed it with Quinn. This year has become a legitimate problem but I think they have addressed it already for next year with Rodriguez and even Bawden who showed potential physically but played like a freshman (big surprise) when given a chance.
And lastly, the foundation of a program is not measured in wins and losses. It's measured by the intangibles. Do these kids play hard? Are they men of good character? Do they quit when the chips are down? Do they study and get good grades? You know the answers to these questions. And before Rocky, this program could not say yes to all those questions for decades. Build a strong foundation and the rest will follow. It takes time, but Rocky has already laid the foundation. He looks like he has addressed all the holes in this roster as well but we won't know for sure until next year. Aside from QB, do you see any other holes on this roster that are not currently filled by young guys with potential?

This is a fun thread. Anything new happening here? So many novels. If a post is more than 400 characters does anybody bother reading it? I don't.

pretty sure we played Ojai-o state last year no? And I think you missed the point there Erik. And I'd wager to guess Rockys first couple years with the defense weren't perfect because he didn't have the personnel for a 3-3-5 not because he couldn't handle both HC and DC duties. Cause if that's your argument, it's not a very good one based on how his defense is doing right now. He didn't have the personnel for the 3-3-5 after 2 years as DC??? How was it that he did a better job as DC before he was HC? Because he wasn't dividing his time between two full time jobs. Come on, it's just common sense - he's not a young man and asking a 65 year old to do two full time jobs at the same time is asking for more than is reasonable. You clearly don't remember his first year as HC when his defenses came out of the gate almost every game looking like a high school unit. They couldn't stop anyone until after halftime, then Rocky made adjustments and the offense had to scramble to catch up. The point is Rocky is not beyond criticism. The fact that there is a rather vocal group that is unwilling to accept any criticism of Rocky is unfortunate. Rocky has done some things very well, he's also done some things poorly. It's not out of line to point out the things that have been done poorly. Expectations are infinitely higher than they were in 2008. What would have seemed great in 2009 is now disappointing. Next year will tell the tale. Rocky supposedly has a great QB group, and everyone on the team will be HIS guys. If he gets the team to 10 regular season wins next year I will gladly eat crow. That's the next level. That would be true progress after 5 straight 7 or 8 win regular seasons. I expect 8 wins in the regular season next year so anything more than that will be great news. But in the meantime it's not out of line to point out what we see as deficiencies in the performance of the team or coaching staff. Just like it wouldn't just be appropriate to congratulate Rocky on a win at Nevada and celebrate a great accomplishment, that kind of celebration would almost be necessary. Except all you do is point out things he does poorly.

And they all tell the same story, just as they have all season. And the season is only half over . . .
