Most of the talk has been centered around Polee and Shepard, even more JJ O Brien talk. I have heard little about Skylar but I expect him to have a very good year, he was always considered raw offensively and with this being his third year I look for him to take a big step on that end, and improve on the board. We already know about his rim protection, and his good defense. I'm a big fan of his.

This past summer...the reports talked about Skylar being the most improved player on the team...
His FT shooting improved tremendously toward the end of last season (although the shot looks bad still).
He still needs to work on a few aspects of his game to really improve including:
- some sort of go-to shot down low (maybe a sky hook or fade away jumper) - he puts the ball back okay (not great) and can jam the ball when fed close to the basket (he has pretty good hands for a big man)
- he'll need to pick up some rebounding slack with the absence of JD - he's never been a rebounder...but rather a shot blocker (two very different skills)
- work on FT shooting as he'll get to the line more often than not
- work on denying the other teams' big men the ball down low (although he moves really good in not allowing the other teams' big men to get an easy dunk down low)
I'm looking for big things with Spencer and Chol (coming in as either a replacement for Spencer or playing along side him at times)
I can't wait until the season starts

I don't know if a universal consensus that he'll start for our crazy good and crazy deep squad means he's "forgotten". He isn't a question mark in any way at the 5 and is sure to improve from a great Sophomore campaign.

I absolutely love Skylar, he's one of my favorite current Aztecs. I loved hearing the reports last month that he'd developed more of an offensive game and continues to improved his free throws. With that said, I actually don't think his minutes will change much this year due to the fact that they won't always need him. There will be several teams they play where they just don't need a center. In those games I'd love to see Fisher use Skylar for about 15 min and develop some of the newer and inexperienced players.

Comments from Shepard about Skylar's improvement ,were great to hear and hope he is the real deal and the coaches do their part getting him involved in the offense.
Do believe Skylar 's improvement is very important for the Aztecs on both ends of the court . The coaching staff needs to first actually include Skylar in the offensive game plan , not just the ball screen . If they are going to run an offense that makes movement with out the ball a key element .When, not if, the guys down low get open ,then get them the ball with the thought implanted, we need you as part of the offense , that it needs to be slammed home for 2 points or 3 if fouled , or passed to another open guy but it could be coming back to you .
To me would rather have the guys down low moving, involved in the offense , then some of the guys trying to catch and shoot threes . Offensive threats from Sky, Chol, JJ-OB , Cheatham would really open up the offense . Also think Sky will be there for RB's with the other guys as it opens up the fast break or put backs
Another plus if Sky continues to develop and possibly become an NBA draft choice . It would also show other C/PF 's that SDSU is a place to come play ( M. Cage Jr........) Recruits do notice .

Love Skylar. There's a quiet competence and confidence about him that's very reassuring.

His vast improvement, if continued should result in him being a reliable inside option on offense and not just a garbage scorer where most of his points came from.

I liked Fisher's comment: The best thing that ever happened to Skylar Spencer was Angelo Chol.
This statement portends better play for Skylar going forward, in my opinion. Also positive for Mr. Chol's future as an Aztec.

Skylar Spencer blocked 11.5% of the 2 points attempts last season when he was in the game. That is #1 in the MWC last season. Skylar Spencer blocked 11.4% of the 2 points attempts career when he was in the game. That is #2 in the MWC history. Not only was his blocks amazing, he also led the conference in rebounding at 11.0 per game. It is not easy to rebound when you are out trying to block shots.

This year we go as far as Skyler and JJ takes us offensively. There is no excused on why Skyler can't be a 10 pts and 12 rebound every night guy.. What he needs to focus on is getting better at offense of rebounding and putting back in chip shots... I've given up on JJ Obrien ever making a 2ft shoot. JJ's whole career at SDSU has been marked with missed easy layups...

But, I think he has potential to keep adding to his tool belt. The way he's developed combined with his natural shot-blocking abilities, I think he will have pro scouts visiting the Mesa to see him.

It's tough for a shot blocker to also be a good rebounder. Usually when you block a shot or try to block a shot, you're out of position for the rebound. He could still get offensive boards, but those are harder to get since the defense is generally in better position. I see Chol being our big time rebounder, and I still see Spencer getting ~6 per game, which would be fine
