What I do want is those students -- who are showing up now -- involved. That means getting them down to field level. As it stands, they sit on their duffs for the first half and then leave. Why? Because it's boring to sit. They'd stand for hours on end, but to what end when they are that remote from the action with little influence on the game's outcome? As it stands now, beyond the End Zone is a Dead Zone until your reach that wall. It's gotta be punched up with those students, who are the ones that bring the "College Game Day Atmosphere". We won't even need the cheer squad to step up their game when the students are brought into the mix because they are plenty clever (see Viejas Arena). Really good and funny feedback on all these responses... I particularly like the Random Canon blasts haha The idea of moving the student section to me, is huge and a much needed change. One that cannot be modified until next season however due to ticketing adjustments. Visiting the Oregon State game this year, i really like how they line up their students on the field level. But even something directly behind the goalposts would be sweet. Something/ANYTHING to get the students more physically involved and impactful. All in all, i think its best to focus on the things that are easy to control and adjust quickly. With that said, i would never expect SDSU to compete with the SEC in terms of atmosphere. But the main reason i point out the audio/video adjustments and the marching band adjustments, is because those two areas are things that can be upgraded fairly easily. Our band is very talented and fully capable of raising their game a bit. And if they for some reason are not capable of playing between the action more or leading the crowd in chants, i would absolutely think the jumbo screen could play some of the same material they use at Chargers games for D-Fense at the least? The other ideas and creativity are long shots, i know. And would take massive amounts of planning and execution. But for the now, its just little tweeks that could help steer the crowd into getting more involved in the game especially with three home games remaining on the schedule. Jumbo screen! Most of us have bigger TVs in our living rooms.

Can't blame the Q. The Chargers play in the same venue yet the game day experience is amazing, especially when the team is doing well. The Aztecs need more interested fans who "turn up" during third downs to help our defense get off the field.

Love these guys! If only we could infuse the rest of the stadium with their energy! Now that would be FUN! Gotta love the saxes! They're always full of energy. That is so awesome...the whole band should sport the lucha libre look one game. Definitely need an Aztec luchador mask giveaway.

True, the fans just need to step it up, but there are certain simple knowledgeable things that they do at the Q for Chargers games that they dont do at Aztecs games. Most notably, music selection and timing and playing a simple D-Fense at the appropriate times.

The Chargers are in the NFL and have a hard enough time filling the place up. We are in the freaking MWC playing crap schools for the most part. Throw in the fact that the seats are farther away from the action than any other collegiate stadium in the nation and it pretty easy to say the venue we play in is our biggest issue with atmosphere. Cut the number of seats in half and bring the fans closer to the action and you'd magically have a much better atmosphere. Do you really disagree with this?

How many seats are left if they block off the upper-most part of the bowl?

How many seats are left if they block off the upper-most part of the bowl? The upper-most part of the bowl isn't used except for the Sky Show, so blocking it off already effectively happens for all but one game.

Make it a great game experience or not - the choice is always yours.
People will be complaining about the Sky Show attendance because no one comes in until the third quarter - preferring to get hammered in the parking lot beforehand. The place won't even be 25% filled at the start of the game. And on and on and on.
Basketball can't start too soon. …the atmosphere there makes even the sourest of sour milk drinkers get involved in the game.

The Q is a run down dump, but not enough to keep me away from supporting my teams. San Diego State football just has no buzz. People would rather hit the Night clubs and other Saturday events than watch an SDSU football game. Don't blame the Q, blame the sorry ass fanbase for not supporting their team. Isn't there over 100,000 alumni in San Diego? Thats more than enough to fill up the Q. We need some better excuses.

A bunch of decade-built apathy builds a lot of empty seats in a neutral-ish site stadium. Really leaves substition easily understandable to the non-committal.

I agree 100% Anyone can just chalk it up to blaming the actual structure of the Q and leave it at that. But thats low hanging fruit. Yes, Qualcomm stadium is old. Yes, the site lines are terrible. Yes, the bowl is wayy too big for the Aztecs crowds. But as fans and athletic department, you cant just say, "this place blows" and then not make the most out of what you got. The athletic department needs to continue to use what they do have to their advantage as much as possible to offset the antiquated stadium. Because no matter where the team plays, the quality of production and atmosphere should always be top notch. THAT has nothing to do with the structure of the building, but rather the structure of the event and the production of that event. Sky Show is an awesome traditional outing for Aztecs Football. I have nothing bad to say about it. I usually always get friends and guests that want to go to that game and i welcome them. Hopefully the athletic dept. can bring up the level of professionalism all season long so that we can capture the interests of those visitors for the long term.

I agree with much of what is said. Something should be done about creating a better atmosphere.

When the stadium doesn't fit the requirements, the experience is lacking. I was in the lower bowl and it was about a mile away from the field. Seeing all the empty seats is a bummer. Still didn't ruin my experience.

Seriously , the Charges game day experience consists of a bunch of drunken dockworkers cursing and brawling. Yes I wish we have more Aztec fans in the stadium but no way would I trade it for the "charger Experience" which I could get if I am arrested for DUI but never because I go to a Charger game voluntarily.

But seriously, I can't EVER see the SDSU home crowd turning into the bad sides of what the Chargers crowd currently shows sometimes. First off, because those type of rowdy knuckle heads dont care about the College game. Typically, because most of those dudes, probably didnt go to college. 2nd if things ever got rowdy in that ways, it would no doubt be when Fresno state is in town. I almost got into it with one of their punks here last year. Our fans do need to 'Turn Up' more, but not in the drunken sense, more in the get loud and cheer on defense sense. And there are simple, key ways the administration can ensure that they can get the most out of this wether at the Q or not.

That's a bunch of bull. The Q is a run down dump, but not enough to keep me away from supporting my teams. Anyone who posts on this board is more than likely very passionate and not the problem. But the Q is a freaking morgue and contributes greatly to the lack of atmosphere. Sure, if we had twice the number of fans it would be as big a deal but we aren't an NFL program we are a MWC program. Our attendance Saturday would have sold out the majority of the stadiums in the MWC but at the Q the place is half full and people are complaining about atmosphere and putting a microphone in front of the band because they can't even hear them. If you want to say that improving the product on the field will help improve the atmosphere I completely agree with you...but to just try and insinuate that the venue we play in has nothing to do with it is crazy. I was pleasantly surprised to see 35,000 (announced) show up to see a 3-3 squad play a crappy Hawaii team at 7:30PM. The students up to this point have really represented. With the Skyshow for Idaho and hopefully some meaningful games for a potential conference championship to close out the season we might have some decent attendance this year despite a crap schedule and crap venue.

There's a reason any given Charger telecast contains about 4-5 ad spots for King Stahlman Bail Bonds -- and it cuz the Charger fans just got out of church...
