Very very nice weekend to be an AZTEC.
Big victory to put us in first place going into the bye.
When it comes down to it, winning is whats #1 priority.
We all know this.
But now, onto my rant.
Because i'm a season ticket holder who was practically born wearing an Aztec t-shirt out of the womb,
certain things matter to me when watching our games at Qualcomm.
Giving away discounted tickets or not, it was a good sized crowd/tailgating atmosphere Saturday.
But, despite having a pretty good # of spectators at the Q,
i have to say the game day experience during the game was really-really lacking.
Part of it, i have to put on the fans.
Sure, the game was an ugly one.
Sure, it was against the not-so-sexy "Rainbow Warriors"
But still, the fans as a whole were just a little too lethargic for a football game.
I can chop it up to there being a lot of newcomers and say 'okay i understand that.'
But the other part, i really have to put on the powers that be in SDSU who create the game day experience at the Q.
The Audio/Video direction was struggling more than usual.
It wasn't just the embarrassing yet comical miscue of the Aztec dance team striking a pose for minutes as they waited for their routine music to start, but never did.
But also the repetitive Lil Jon 'Turn Down For What' booty bass track that kicked up EVERY 3rd down.
I mean i know the song is catchy and gets the ladies movin, but really? Every 3rd down? lol
The normal jumbo screen games and the guy that MC's those games/giveaways etc does a good job and i have no complaint.
But theres got to more than this right guys?
More production in the form of highlight videos shown of the previous week vs New Mexico.
Or maybe videos of years past Aztecs greats shown on the big screen to celebrate achievements, players or teams would be awesome.
We never see cool footage of Coryell, Santos, Faulk, the Darkside defense, etc. ever?
With all the great Aztecs personalities, past players, & coaches that are now in the media or in professional leagues,
i would think there would be a ton of commercial/promotional spots or just fun video's that could be created to get the crowd excited at key moments.
These kind of videos could go a long way in bringing up the perception of the program as a whole if done correctly.
Especially when there are many 1st time visitors like i assume there were Saturday.
There weren't any Chants or traditional football calls to action other than our 'Aztec First down!'
At least at the CHARGERS games, they put a big D-Fense chant on the big screen at appropriate times.
But when all i hear is 'Chet' leading the Aztec faithful in his booming voice that you can hear all across the Q,
i have to wonder why dont we just un-retire him & his hard-hat and let him lead the cheerleaders again, because
ours dont DO SQUAT.
The other big way that a college game day experience is influenced is thru the Marching Band.
A bands presence makes the college game so distinct as opposed to an nfl game.
I'm sorry, i love our marching Aztecs, i truly do.
But i couldn't help but sit there saturday night and say to myself,
our band is so WORTHLESS tonight.
I will say on TV the band is mic'd up and it sounds good.
But, at the game...it was terrible.
There was no action from the band to stir things up?
Not even the drumline playing something to make some noise between plays?
Which really led to a lack in rhythm to watching the game...just a lot of awkward silence.
Unless you count the band playing pop tunes as your kind of thing to listen to,
its just overall really-really pathetic.
All i hear on this board is how we are not a P5 conference or this & that...
Well, i choose to focus on what we are and what we DO have to use at our disposal.
And believe me, there is a TON to use if they would just use it.
Again,
it was a great weekend for our team.
And maybe its just because of my background that i have such a critical eye and ear.
But the game day experience matters to me big time.
SDSU needs to step its game up in a major way.
We may not be a P5 program, but at least put together a P5 caliber level of game day production.
My only question to this board i guess, would be does it even matter to many of you?
Are you comfortable with the level of effort put forth to create a real college game day atmosphere?
That is all.
