People leaving at halftime isn't only an SDSU occurrence. I went to the USC game yesterday and after halftime about 40% of the crowd had left. We're not unique ... just on a smaller scale. I was in Tempe for #23 Stanford vs. #17 Arizona State last night. It was also family/parents night and the place was ~90% full. A good portion of the crowd too left early (it was still a two-score game), however here you can tailgate five hours before kickoff, so there's a lot of hurtin' individuals by the time the clock strikes midnight on the east coast.

For me and some others I know, the 7:30 start time helped. I am a big fan of the 7:30pm start. With so many transplants, most, if not all of the other games are over so football fans that have other teams they like are done for the day. Let's face it, a huge % of san diegians grew up somewhere else.

TV dictates when we play and the other side of the coin is 7:30 kickoffs are terrible for folks like me that make the trek down to SD from the L.A. area.
So I get what you're saying but I think all things considered, 5:30 KOs are ideal.

I didn't get home until almost 1:00 AM this morning. That's ridiculous. A 5:00 start accomplishes what you're talking about - allowing the East Coast and Midwest games to go final before the kickoff of the Aztec game - AND it allows people to have the bulk of their Saturday night free to go see a movie or (for the younger fans) go to a party. 5:00 is the best start time, IMO.

There's a pretty good Hawaii crowd here to help. If there was a large Hawaii contingent, they were very quiet all night. That's because coming to the game is secondary. I'd say they're now in 'Vegas, specifically the Fremont Street area where they cater to Pacific Islanders.

Late game last night - was in the stands. Great to see the 'tecs win. Here's some photos and my live blog from the game last night (and update this morning): Aztecs game blog. Good win but Im exhausted. Wasn't going to go, but decided to check it out. Easier than trying to find it on tv...I need to add a new tier to my cable package to get CBS SN? bull$#!+.

I'll co-sign the comments above: Great crowd; Would have looked even better in a right-sized on-campus college football stadium; Good student support.
As to those students... I've been impressed. They've made a leap from previous seasons in that they at least make the attempt to go to the game, if only for the first half, every game. In previous years, it's been that they show for the first game and that was it. Season over. Here we are approaching late October and they are still showing up.
Many here will remember that The Show at Cox Arena began with the humblest of beginnings -- maybe 3-4 rows of students just showing up and not caring if anybody else was with them or not. They were just having fun, being themselves. Maybe this is the beginning of that for football. If they come early, get a little tailgating in, go in for a half, and then head back to campus at halftime, that's a start. That at least shows they have some interest and have some pride, and that might not only slowly grow the student section and culture, but bring them back to games after they graduate.

I was expecting a crappy turnout for this game and am so glad to be wrong.

For me and some others I know, the 7:30 start time helped. You don't need a late start time on a weekend to help with the attendance. I am not sure I favor the late start. The game ended around 11:00pm. My 5 yo daughter started the "can we go home" around 9:00pm. We got back home to north county around 11:30pm. We left with 4 minutes to go.

Not surprised folks here expected a crappy turnout. The general attitude toward the FB program on this board would dictate as much.

I just wish they'd kickoff that hot first game at 7:30 instead of this cooler evening. 5:00 PM is definitely more family friendly. I didn't bring my youngest because his bedtime is 8. Could stretch to 9 or so but I would have been carrying him out after the game, which is no fun. I'm a fan of another team that usually plays in EST. So while I did watch half of my teams game in the stadium on WatchESPN... I did like having a full-on football extravaganza.

People complain no matter the game time! Afternoon games interfere with kids activities, or time doing something else and later games are just that, too late, it's no wonder "the murph" is empty! Go to Oklahoma and see how the crowd is at 9am or 9pm....no different! They are just appreciative to spend 6 days of the 365 days watching football. It's crazy that people don't just accomodate any time and put their other "activities" off for a day.....it's just 6 freeeking days a year people!!!
Saturday's in the fall should be reserved for Aztec football no matter what. It's just 6 damn days a year!!!

It was a nice turnout. I went into the game with 4 extra (pretty good) tickets in my pocket because I couldn't find anyone who wanted them. Even walking around outside of the stadium I couldn't find anyone looking. Of course not. Qualcomm is so isolated, there is absolutely no reason to be near it without a ticket
