With the basketball season fast approaching, the Oracle thought it would be fun to list the top 10 players under Fisher's teams here at SDSU. Without further adieu here is the Oracle's 10 ten.
1. Kawhi Leonard (this one was easy)
2. Xavier Thames
3. Randy Holcomb
4. Marcus Slaughter
5. Brandon Heath
6. Jamaal Franklin
7. Mohammed Abukar
8. Aerick Sanders
9. DJ Gay
10. Billy White
The Oracle's rational for this list was mostly focused on how much value they had at SDSU with some consideration as to their professional careers. The top 7 (excluding Xavier because this is his rookie year) had decent professional careers here and overseas.
You may notice that Malcolm is not on this list. The Oracle's rational here is that Malcolm has become significantly better after graduation. I give him a lot of credit for working very hard to become a boarder line NBA player. My knock on Malcolm while at SDSU was that he did have times where he disappeared and blended with the supporting cast. Plus, it was hard to make a good argument that despite his talents, he provided more value than the players ranked 6-10.
If any of the players are reading this. This is all for fun. Players like Malcolm/Lo Wade/Spain/Faux/Tapley all are fantastic players and were major contributors while at SDSU.

I don't know why you guys have Marcus Slaughter ahead of Brandon Heath on your list. If he decided to stay in school and not declare for the draft him and Brandon Heath would of made the sweet 16 that year but nope he was an idiot and didn't get drafted.

If he decided to stay in school and not declare for the draft him and Brandon Heath would of made the sweet 16 that year but nope he was an idiot and didn't get drafted. Slaughter is playing in maybe the best league outside the NBA and making good money. |

I disagree with Malcolm not being on the list. The best passing big man we have ever had, complimented Kawhi and DJ extremely well. If oracle argues that Malcolm disappeared at times... what is Billy White doing on his list then?? Nobody in Fisher's era did less with more than BW. Billy could take over a game any time he wanted (Gonzaga, Wichita State, BYU in MWC title game, etc.) but more often than not had a quiet 8 pts and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes. I loved Billy, one of my favorites to watch but he was very inconsistent.

I disagree with Malcolm not being on the list. The best passing big man we have ever had, complimented Kawhi and DJ extremely well. If oracle argues that Malcolm disappeared at times... what is Billy White doing on his list then?? Nobody in Fisher's era did less with more than BW. Billy could take over a game any time he wanted (Gonzaga, Wichita State, BYU in MWC title game, etc.) but more often than not had a quiet 8 pts and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes. I loved Billy, one of my favorites to watch but he was very inconsistent. Eye test simply tells you want you want to see, whatever the smell test is I have no idea. |

Also, he had one of the best post-season tournament performances for SDSU his senior year. He was simply a beast during the MWC tourney and in the big dance. The best game played in SDSU BB history in a win was hands down the 30 points scored by Billy White at Gonzaga.

I think it's justified Kawhi being the #1 spot. He did lots of things that stats dont show, simply with his length and athleticism on defense (plus his stats were pretty damn good). He also was the key player on the best team SDSU has ever had... Which is why I also think Xavier deserves #2 since he led our 2nd best team (and did it with less of a supporting cast). Winning matters

Obviously this is totally subjective, there are many things that help contribute to the program. Xavier Thames carried the team on his back more than any player in the Fisher era. Jamaal Franklin had a statistically the best years in the Fisher era, Brandon Heath had incredible career numbers, but Kawhi Leonard had great years plus an incredible pro career so far.
Combining all that into one subjective pile of biased rankings here is mine:
1. Kawhi Leonard
2. Xavier Thames
3. Jamaal Franklin
4. Brandon Heath
5. Malcolm Thomas
6 Randy Holcomb
7. Marcus Slaughter.
8. DJ Gay
9. Tony Bland

Outside of the Gonzaga game, Billy's best play of his career were his last 5 or 6 games... that was after FOUR years as a starter. I remember he was quoted saying that Fish told him he needed to step up, which he certainly did. I do agree that his two best games were two of the best in SDSU history (@gonzaga, BYU MWC title game). Funny thing, that double double aganst BYU was his first of the season as a starting power forward. He only had 5 double doubles in his entire career of 134 games played. In comparioson, Malcolm had 19 double doubles in 71 career games. Malcolm was the most prolific shot blocker in Aztecs history until some kid named Skylar Spencer showed up. He also led the team in assists 18 different times. He was just a very verastile post player. Just a more consistent player in my eyes - and other's eyes too as he was voted to 2nd team all-conference in both seasons at SDSU, while BW was honorable mention his final 3 years after being 3rd team/Freshman of the year his first season. Billy was baffling to me because he had it in him, he really could have been a top 5 player to ever put on the red and black but he just disappeared way too much. Or deferred to others too much. His defense was outstanding when he was focused. Again, one of my personal favorites, and a very exciting player, but too many times you couldn't remember if he was even on the floor that night. Anyway, my intent is not to bash on Billy - he was definitely a great player on our greatest team ever. I just can't put him on my top 10 list in the Fisher era, especially ahead of Malcolm Thomas. As others mentioned, its all subjective and full of personal opinions and bias. I cheered proudly and loudly for all of the guys I listed. |

Crazy how everyone knew, but Marcus and family, that he was not ready for the League Some of you guys wanna share a lil bit of Holcomb's game? Did he create a buzz around town like the guys today? |
