The MTN ahead of its time. I loved the channel and should have partnered with CBS on the deal. It was just too soon and didn't know what they were doing.

The problem was we didn't have someone who had a savvy media background to nurture it during its infancy. We still don't.

They syndicate football and basketball for many more conferences, including the Big 12, and they operate the SEC Network for the conference. The MWC is pretty much filler programming for ESPN.

The problem was it was rarely broadcast in HD. Was not available on all the cable outlets and the broadcast crews were filled with BYU wonks! They only had enough money to pay for HD in football and the conference basketball tournament. If the network had been run by TV folk, I think it could have survived. The PAC12 network is surviving without a directv deal for Pete's sake! I have no idea if they plan to look at starting it back up, I wish they did.

In case you haven't noticed, the major networks, ESPN, ABC, CBS and Fox, still carry the games that have the greatest interest and the Big10, Pac10 and SEC networks usually carry the games withou much national interest.

I do miss those days. I could sit on my couch from like 11 a.m. to almost midnight in some cases watching really good quality football and hoops. The MTN made it possible to follow the MWC in-depth, game by game at time when the conference was really at its peak -- certainly better than at least 2 of the BCS conferences, and giving the PAC 10 fits on a weekly basis in their own backyard. It gave a feeling of a cohesive conference rather than 10 or so individual teams, something that's been missing since the network's demise.
To paraphrase a dead singer: Didn't we almost have it all?
