If only our football program were as respected as Aztec basketball. The Sporting News college basketball preview magazine is out, and it's clear that they like Fisherball.
First of all, SDSU is ranked #16 in their preseason poll. That's right after UCONN and ahead of Virginia Commonwealth. Also ahead of Michigan State, Oklahoma, Utah, Ohio State, etc. Our Aztecs are predicted to take the MWC title in '14-'15. But there's more!
Magazines such as this one highlight players and teams they think will excel. Well, guess whose photo is on the cover of this issue (though up in the corner)? If you guessed Winston Shepard, you are correct. The caption says that this is his year to shine! Still not done! Open the magazine and there are two photos on the contents page. The one on the inside cover is features Kansas and Oklahoma; on the facing page is a shot of Shepard driving past a UNLV player. Hey, would you have thought that the program would get such publicity even a decade ago! Of course not!
Of Fisher, the magazine says . . .
Years from now, long after he has retired, basketball historians are going to look back at the job Steve Fisher did in bringing back San Diego State's program from the dead and ask a simple question: "How on earth did he do it?
Polee and Chol also receive recognition.
Ah, yes, Aztec basketball. Remember '92 when the team won 2 games? Or Fish's first year when they won just 4? What a difference.

So did Fisher's from about '03-'09. We are building a solid foundation in football and we'll take off in 1-3 years. Great pool of young talent at SDSU right now |

It is? It seems Rocky Long's program has stalled. So did Fisher's from about '03-'09. We are building a solid foundation in football and we'll take off in 1-3 years. Great pool of young talent at SDSU right now Agreed. How soon they forget. Fishers conference win percentage in his first 6 years at SDSU 0.00% 28.57% 50.00% 42.86% 35.71% 28.57% That is from 2000-2005. After that point the Aztecs have had a winning record in conference, every year. It is safe to say that Rocky will have a better W/L in conference than that over his first 6 years. Rocky's W/L % including as DC. 25.0% 62.5% 57.1% 87.5% 75.0% This is his 6th year. In Fisher's 6th year he had a 28.57% winning record in conference. Anyone want to bet that Rocky won't be better? Didn't think so. |

The article said it would wondered "How on earth did he do it?". One big contributing factor was not getting fired during his first 6 years. A lot of his improvement wasn't being seen in actual wins.
After the 2004-2005 season
11-18 (4-10) record in his 6th season.
The conference record was worse every year over the past 4
The Aztecs finished the regular season with 6 straight loses.
The Aztecs lost a 10 point lead, at home, in 19 seconds to lose to UNLV.
Many schools would fire their coach with those results.

Most wouldn't give him the 4th year. Obviously Fisher's history gives him added time most anywhere he would have gone, especially when starting at ground zero. Football is on a good trajectory when you consider the program as a whole, but has a lower ceiling given the difference in the two sports. Basketball has a 64 team plus four playoff in which at least theoretically, any of the those annointed has an unlimited ceiling and shot at the national championship and any Division I program has a chance to be a plyoff qualifier.
Football on the other hand was sold out to a cartel of five conferences resulting in a very low ceiling of opportunity for the remaining majority of Division I programs.
There is just no comparison between the two sports when it comes to opportunity/trajectory.
There is a fair comparison between Coaches Fisher and Long in that they are both very good at what they do, have improved their programs significantly, improved the quality and character of the student athletes they have recruited and increased graduation rates.

To even make the Final 4 (which to me is an incredible achievement for either sport) in football we'd need to have a year where most of our 2-deep were juniors/seniors, and 100% healthy with an experienced & very talented QB. When you're talking 22+ people on the field the disparity overall is so much greater and since we won't recruit at the UCLA/USC/UO level we have to overcome talent with experience. In hoops you have high turnover, which helps balance out the talent pool to some degree (look at how young Kentucky is annually), and even mid majors spend on par with several major schools. Plus, 1-2 really good players can lift the entire team to another level - not so much in football. With football you have 100k capacity stadiums, vs. 30k for many, whereas in hoops you're talking 5k vs. 12k typically. Definitely easier to get a SDSU, Wichita St, Gonzaga, etc. into the final 4 in hoops than for SDSU to accomplish the same in football. Then again, I don't think the final 4 is a necessary goal for football either. Programs are defined by conference championships & quality bowls in football. In hoops, it's march madness & how well you play over 2-3 weekends, basically. |

Finals for basketball is like football winning that bowl game. Championship for basketball would be like getting into the final 4 in football. |
