AHL hockey: bring it on! I think an NHL/Anaheim - AHL/San Diego partnership would be a great fit... although based on past hockey ownership in this town I'd prefer the Ducks maintain ownership. As always, the question will be "how many hockey fans are there in San Diego?" The original Gulls of the Western Hockey League (1966-74) drew very good crowds on a regular basis but the brand of hockey of the WHL was quite high for a AAA minor league. The AAA AHL could be a similar product that may garner support, and the relatively easy access up I5 to the parent club for occasional NHL action would be a bonus for the San Diego fan. In any event, I'm all for a new incarnation of the San Diego Gulls.

Big woop. The 8th largest city in the U.S. might have a minor league hockey team....again. Being the 8th "largest city" is a statistical fluke. Place the footprint of the "city" on other areas and then compare population. You will find us not in the top 10. San Francisco is only 12 square miles. Include an extra 360 square miles that San Diego claims as part of the city and San Francisco's population would swell to well beyond what San Diego has. Just calling outlying areas "San Diego" doesn't really add anything toward supporting a hockey team - either in attendance or TV. Everywhere I'm looking says San Francisco is about 49 square miles as a city, and the county is like 230 square miles. I'm not saying you're wrong just wondering where you got 12 square miles from.

I don't know where I remembered 12 from. San Francisco City is 46.9 square miles and San Francisco county is 46.9 square miles. The only consolidated city-county in California. The difference between your 230 and the 46.9 above is land versus land and water. San Francisco city and county is 80% water. 46.9 Square Miles is the land area of both. From Wiki: The city and its surroundings are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, part of the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, with an estimated population of 8.5 million. Sq KM, Population, Area 27,624 8,469,854 San Francisco Statistical Area 41,940 4,922,723 San Diego Statistical Area

If the San Diego Gulls are to make a comeback, they better have this logo and uniforms: They should go back to orange, blue and white. Then the colors could finally go back to matching the arena seats. Plus, I still have an original GULLS pennant--faded, but still hanging proudly.

Funny, of all people referring to a stat as a statistical fluke....Stat Boy. 8th, 10th, 12th,....whatever. No city this big should have anything minor league. San Antonio is larger than San Diego and has only 1 major league team (for now). Although I, too, would prefer all 4 major sports in town, I can always head up the I-5 to see the Ducks, Kings or Clippers, but should the AHL show up here next season, I will be there--smelly arena not withstanding.

Oh f**k Bill. Most of the world? Says who? If it were cold and cloudy in San Diego today it might have SNOWED. How's that for f**king abstract? If Kaehler had hit his own receiver instead of the DB we might have won. If it were sunny at night it wouldn't be dark. Go support your minor league bull$#!+. For me, it's just a waste of time unless I decide to drive up to Elsinore for $1 beers. If it were sunny at night, you'd be in the arctic and it would be summer. Bill--Wikipedia says the SD Metro area is just under 3.1 million, for what that's worth.
