Heard there is a good chance that the Ducks will move their top minor league team to the Sports Arena next year.

There is a move to do to the AHL (top minor league for NHL) what happened to MLB when the Dodgers and Giants moved to California. Expect 4 California teams next season.
San Diego Bakersfield Sacramento Ontario

This would be great, miss going to the old Gulls games.
Would be nice to get a real arena someday and get an NBA or NHL team.

Just read any thread on building a new stadium for the Bolts (and maybe the AZTECS) and you'll see why there will NEVER be a new fancy Arena in San Diego to house a NBA or NHL team. Small minds won't allow it to happen.

Big woop. The 8th largest city in the U.S. might have a minor league hockey team....again. Being the 8th "largest city" is a statistical fluke. Place the footprint of the "city" on other areas and then compare population. You will find us not in the top 10. San Francisco is only 12 square miles. Include an extra 360 square miles that San Diego claims as part of the city and San Francisco's population would swell to well beyond what San Diego has. Just calling outlying areas "San Diego" doesn't really add anything toward supporting a hockey team - either in attendance or TV.

Funny, of all people referring to a stat as a statistical fluke....Stat Boy. 8th, 10th, 12th,....whatever. No city this big should have anything minor league. Than you should move Thought about it before. The only reason people in this city get excited by anything minor league is that they're small time thinkers. Those who are still in the 60s that don't want San Diego to grow. Those who can't see the value in building a new stadium, even if they have to pony up part of it. Those who are satisfied just being competitive every once-in-awhile. I for one am glad Steve Fisher didn't think that OK was good enough. and rather than watch Minor League hockey at the smelly Sports Arena, I'll take the train or drive to Anaheim and see top-notch hockey.

The question raised was how big "this big" is. Being 8th in population is an artifact of the cities immense boundaries. If San Francisco had an area half as big as San Diego, its population would be greater. If San Diego had only 12 square miles counted in the cites "population", it would be considered a small city. Where they draw lines on a map doesn't change the underlying "bigness" of an area.

I know just dreaming of a better day, but this is California. There's talk that Vegas is going to build a new soccer stadium and arena for NHL Hockey. Vegas is 180 from San Diego when it comes to creativity and making things happen. The people of S.D sometimes really piss me off how they can be so "me-me" and small minded. The new $375 mil, 20,000 seat arena being built jointly by AEG and MGM Entertainment is currently under construction, located between New York New York and the Monte Carlo on The Strip. It is 20% complete, and scheduled for a spring 2016 opening.
