OC Toledo was on 1090 radio this AM . Going into the start of Fall Practices next week . He expects to run a West Coast offense this year . Strengths on offense: experienced QB in QK , great Tail Back in D.P who he believes will be over 1000 total yards- have him run the ball and get him the ball in space , Ruffin a very good receiver , spread the passing out including shot gun. Read the other team's D , take advantage of mis matches as they occur. OL looks as though they have size and should be important part of the offense, will see when practice starts next week .

Interesting. Does this signal the end of the power running game? I thought that was effective because few run it. But with no Muema, and no Chad Young maybe the personell are better suited to the West Coast Offense.

With Pumphrey and Price #1 and #2, I see a lot of screens and outisde running plays. If Stamps steps up, we may see some power.

Coach Toledo said he wanted a balanced attack , do not want to be predictable, keep the other team's D guessing what we are going to do .Know our strength's and weakness and same for our opponents. Take what the defense gives you . Put players in position to do their best .

In another thread I said that two factors will help attendance. Winning and an exciting offense. This may be a big step towards the exciting offense and hopefully will also result in more wins. Interesting Wikipedia article on "West Coast Offense." "In American football, the "West Coast offense" is an offense that places a greater emphasis on passing than on running. There are two similar but distinct offensive strategic systems which are commonly referred to as "West Coast offenses". Originally the term referred to the Air Coryell system popularized by Don Coryell, but, following a journalistic error, it now more commonly refers to the offensive system popularized by Bill Walsh, characterized by short, horizontal passing routes in lieu of running plays to "stretch out" defenses, opening up the potential for long runs or long passes." (Emphasis added.)

on another note, coach Long was on 1090 yesterday and was acting like he had a complete personality transplant in the off season. maybe i just hadn't heard much from him recently, but he was joking with the guys, talking about non-football stuff, and just came across as an overall great guy. not that he's not a great guy, but in most interviews and such he comes across pretty direct, to the point and not too personable. it was good to hear.

He must be getting comfortable because he likes what he sees, and it shows. Also, he's delegating more authority to his assistants and they must be doing a good job. Less burden on Rocky's back. Oldie Out seemed like a totally different guy... it was nice... hope it sticks. at times he tended to come off as bill belichick with more personality. more personality that billy b still sets the bar pretty low.

I don't think we've seen the last of the "26 Power O"… But I sure hope they'll try more dunks into the middle or some options to the flat.

Offenses should be balanced attacks , and are driven in both the NFL and in college by your QB . If you want to attract quality QB's then you better be known for it . Heard Rocky on the radio and TV . He said it was in a great mood talking about football and his team going into fall practices next week . It is also important for him and as many coaches and players to get out into the public or at least on every radio station , TV station or even out in the public now to build up interest in the team , as positive as possible. Then he added that his mood might not be as great next week ,when he gets the guys on the field. Sure hope he invites the media and fans out to watch or talk with the team at some of the practices. Also think a theme of "Back to the Good Old Days of Coryell " would not hurt with the fans . Exciting plays that produce WINS does put fans in the stands and even fans watching the team on TV - all important for the Aztec resume .

Brady Hoke explained that he liked the power running game as a means to make his teams tougher, more physical, willful and capable of winning through domination of opponents. Hence OC's who used that approach as their base.
From my recollection of Bob Toledo in his time at UCLA, he seemed like a coach who preferred to have an offense that operated from a base of being unpredictable for defenses, assuming he had the horses.
I suspect that he has increasingly worked to get the right horses for the kind of offense he likes to run which features flexibility and unpredictablility, particularly in relation to down and distance.
If that is the case, this could be an interesting season and a preview of the future.

Everything above is consistent with a couple comments Rocky made on MWC media day. He said that contrary to the last couple years, our RB isn't going to be a big bruiser but rather Pumphrey. Although Pumphrey is able to run between the tackles, he's most dangerous getting the ball in space so we're going to have different looks that accomplish that.
A couple comments Rocky made about Jake Rodrigues suggest the offense is also gradually going to be tweaked to take advantage of his strengths. It's tough to be patient but I have a feeling we're going to have a powerhouse of an offense in 2016.

I think Toledo is going to the Walsh offense & trying to get the ball out of the QBs hands quickly rather than throwing timing routes (Air Coryell) downfield to highly talented WRs. Just a thought. "The West Coast offense should really be the Ohio River offense because it's Paul Brown's offense that [Bill] Walsh took out of there," Belichick said, referencing Walsh's 1980s San Francisco 49ers teams that won three Super Bowls. Though he passed away in 1991, Paul Brown is still influencing the NFL game. Much like Walsh's scheme, which helped revolutionize the modern-day NFL, Brown's system called for short-yardage throws to receivers and running backs in spaces where they could take off and gain yards after the catch. It opened up offenses, and put the onus on defenders to account for more than two or three playmakers. espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/75211/belichick-hails-paul-browns-ohio-river-o

Good OC evaluates his talent and adjusts his offense to fit the players . It means knowing the strength of your skill players and OL . He knows what QK , DP and Ruffin can do , use them in the best possible situations . What is the OL able to do on a consistent basis helps what calls you make for the offense , especially for the QB . Get the ball in the hands of your play makers and let them make plays . Think an exciting offense could attract fans . A variety of plays in attack mode , even the no huddle if he thinks QK can handle it .

Power has long been a staple of the west coast running game. I don't believe that we will see much difference in the types of running plays called this year versus last year.

The West Coast offense is really too complicated for college and you need an experienced QB and WR's to run it which is why I prefer the spread offense. Simple and difficult to defend, especially with the uptempo nature that teams are using now.
