Because he's proven he can win here. HE was the head coach last year, the team responded. Plus he was the guy in charge of player evaluations and recruiting. The players strongly wanted him to be their baseball coach; they've known Tony was just a figure head the past 2-3 seasons, given his health. Some fans will never be happy even when the right guy is already in place. Speaking of "Due diligence", but definition, is doing a comprehensive appraisal of the business/situation in order to evaluate it's potential. Anyone who's followed the team and appraised the situation can see the team is heading in the right direction under Martinez. Since the program has lost Tony, how will that affect recruiting? Can the program still get the same quality of players without a MLB Hall of Famer as head coach? The current players may like Martinez, but is his name strong enough to bring in top talent? I have no problem with the promotion. He was Tony's guy and should be given a shot for that reason alone. Just pointing out that the SDSU brand is not the same without TG.

Why would you publicly undercut your de facto coach and show weakness? Sent from my SM-G900V using proboards I didn't know de facto meant official. Everyone associated with the team knew it and was widely mentioned in this forum by those close to the program when folks were asking about TG and finally when the ceremonial 1 year TG extension and new 3 year contract was given to Coach Martinez. It was also pretty self-evident to the casual observer. De facto was appropriately used in the context off my psot.

But my interest in this program has waned considerably. It reminds me a lot of the Padres.

I guess you can see back-to-back MWC Baseball Champions and NCAA Tourney both of the last two years as not doing better under TG / MM if you want to. I can't speak for everyone, but I can see the improvements being made and a possible future. I don't know what the effect will be on future recruiting, but I favor the consistency going forward.

If being back-to-back conference champs & going to the tourney causes someone's interest to "wane...like the Padres", they may never be satisfied. Martinez definitely doing a great job & it's very obvious.

They have really improved the last two years and have a lot of talented freshman coming in this fall. I don't believe they lost any of them to the draft this year.

Shocked that SGF hasn't come on and mentioned Mike Batesole yet.

Is that asking too much?
