This is going to be another one of my infamous long posts so buyer beware and don't read any further if that bugs you.
We are still over a week away from practice starting and getting more information we know now that the two remaining junior-college transfers did not make it in the fall nor did Dionte Sikes. There are two more high school players who may make it in in August or not. I wonder with the 3 to 5 scholarships suddenly opened up if a last-minute transfer might pop up.?
It looks like were pretty solid in almost every position but I am particularly happy about what has happened to the trenches. Just a few years ago we had walk ons and 230 pound defensive ends, now we have a lot of guys who were three and one even four-star athletes with excellent size on the defensive line. The o'line which has not been particularly good the last two years nonetheless has a lot of high-quality athletes and the line if it stays as it is now, averages 6 foot five and 308 pounds. That line also has a lot of highly rated athletes in it. Most importantly for the first time in two years Rocky says he thinks the offensive line will be good. The last two years he told us he was very worried about it.
I'm interested in the key battles that are going to be going on in fall camp. There will be the battle for backup quarterback, the battle between Stamps and Price for who alternates with DJ, the contest at right tackle between Corbett and Pierce Slater. On defense is mostly going to come down to who can fill the Warrior safety spots I think McGee is going to be an outstanding Aztec safety. As long as the line is just adequate on offense and Quinn stays healthy were going to win eight of wargames and go to a bowl. If Quinn not only stays healthy but improves as much as I think you will in his second year we are going to be our debate in the Mountain West. Except for the sleepwalker at Las Vegas the offense finally got in to roll down the road.
Laster Toledo complained about the size of the line and his physical strength so obviously they worked on that almost everyone on the line is much bigger and hopefully much stronger. I also think that points to a lot of two tight end sets and a lot of power running and a ball control passing game.
Those games against North Carolina and Oregon State are early enough in the season that anything can happen. It will come down to who makes the fewest mistakes. We have a little advantage in that North Carolina game only in that respect, they will have a new quarterback. The way it looks right now I don't expect Jake Feley to get much work before conference starts. However, Josh Gavert did a great job in his absence I also don't expect Christian Hayward to have much of an impact until the end of the season.
I think our pass rush with Meredith were he belongs, Dontrel, Barrett(who is my choice for breakout player of the year) Fred M. And Derek Largent are really going to cause havoc. One of the things you have to notice if your Coach Toledo when we get to the Boise game is at their cornerbacks are 5 foot eight and 5 foot nine. I would give them a big dose of Larry Clark. I am open by that time one of our young tight ends starts to step up as well. Pretty much everything Rocky has said concerning his team seems to be pretty accurate, he doesn't inflate them and he doesn't sandbag too much. He does do the latter when he feels like is being annoyed by the press. He obviously is very high on Marcus Stamps so I wouldn't be surprised if Marcus wasn't the breakout player on offense.
