The 1090 interview was maybe the most interesting one I've heard Rocky give. He was specific about the importance of winning the two P5 road games we have this year and about eventually getting into the top 25, and he even mentioned, without prompting from Darren Smith, the possibility of earning an invite to a better conference. His theme was having goals and ambition for the program, ideas not commonly associated with Long or the athletic department.
I think Long and Sterk may have more intention toward upward mobility than many posters give them credit for.

Many posters here accuse both Sterk and Long as being slow, indecisive and living in the past. They are not master communicators but they both see the big picture and do the best they can with the weapons they have at their disposal.
I understood the BigXII was impressed with the SDSU presentation a few years ago.

the interview with D. Smith on 1090 lasted over 15 minutes , was great . D Smith said the team last year started 0-3 then came on great . Rocky said he hopes with an experienced QK at QB the team will get off to a much faster start this year. Rocky said the key to the offense is your QB . If he had a vote he would have picked Nevada to win the West because they have the best returning QB . Huge advantage for P5 schools and it could get even larger . Aztecs need to recruit well and then coach the guys so they have the opportunity to beat a P5 school . Beat a couple of them and it could put them in position to be a member of the P5 . He is very proud of going to 4 straight bowl games and feels it was important that he said it last year . If he is not proud of his team then who will be .. He hopes the Aztecs will be a P5 team but to do that you need to beat them . Next step for the team win the conference and do it on a constant basis . Asked about the schedule fine line on who he and Sterk set up on the schedule . Need P5 schools they have an opportunity to beat . Try to get a home and away - what they are now setting up with the PAC but also know they sometimes have to play a "money " gave for the Athletic programs . Buckeyes last year NC this year . S. Rivers yes the Aztecs talked with him but at the time there was no scholarship . June jones idea of the non P5 schools playing their football season in the Spring instead of the fall , is not something Rocky would go for it signals "giving in " to the P5 . Something he does not believe is the correct thing to do . He also feels the Media Event should be in San Diego not in 102 degree heat on Las Vegas . Feels Coach Fisher has done a great job but it was not done quickly . Feels his team should be very competitive this year if QK is healthy and hopes to compete for the MW championship . Great staff that does not get too high over wins or too low on a loss. the complete interview is on the 1090 website -

I caught most of the interview while on the way to an appt. I must admit, I am actually warming up to the guy, although I still wish he would be more of a cheerleader to his players after they make great plays. His old school way has always rubbed me the wrong way, especially with his crossed arms and very little emotion. It was interesting the way he mentioned Fish and the basketball program two or three times. He commented that fans seem to forget it took Fish many years to build this program. I almost sensed a tiny bit of envy there...Overall, the best interview I have EVER heard out of Rocky.

Coach Long has made no secret of the fact that he is following the blueprint established by Coach Fisher, a man he very much admires. Rather than jumping for the brass ring and succeeding every so often, it's better to build a solid foundation and continue to make improvements so that the ring is always within reach. The football team is on a similar trajectory (starting in 2009) that the basketball team began on in 1999. Coach Fisher has a 10 year head start on Coach Long, but Rocky is catching up. The last 4 years have been really good for both programs on the Mesa.
It was just this year that coach Fisher declared we have more than a team, we have a PROGRAM ... I hope that Rocky can say that soon!

One thing I can't get over when folks compare the 2 coaches is that Fisher had won a national championship and recruited the Fab Five. Rocky hasn't come close to anything resembling that kind of success prior to taking over SDSUs program.
With Coach Fish we knew it was possible, with Coach Pong, just not sure....

Even though we "knew" what we were getting with Coach Fisher, it still took 10 years with him at the helm before we WON a game in the NCAA Tourney ... and 15 years before he was comfortable in calling what San Diego St. had -- a PROGRAM. If only we had been as smart as USD in 2004. They hired Jim Harbaugh ... who went on to Stanford and then the 49ers -- successful, even though he'd never won a National Championship at the college level. I'm not sure what it is you expect or don't expect from Coach Long in the 4 years he's been the Head Coach or the 6 years he's been with the program, but after two decades of mediocrity (or worse) -- I think 4 straight years of 8+ wins & 4 Bowl games is a good start for the man in charge of Aztecs Football.

Long, with Hoke kick starting the program prior, has done an awesome job. As for what he'd done prior to SDSU - take a look at what NM had done before he got there & especially since he left. He exceeded expectations there as well.

Sounds as if he gets it that the QB is the most important player on the roster . Important to have QK ready to play and hopefully a back up ready also- be prepared .Also have an idea about QB's for this year and next. Did talk with S.Rivers but there was not a scholarship to give. After QB , have OL to protect him and WR's to throw to .Rules and style of play has changed . Believe he trusts Toledo and may let him run the offense . On the other side of the ball - have guys that can get to their QB . He was great on the interview now realize he/staff needs to be out their with the public / media promoting the team . Also let his players go out and meet the people of San Diego county , establish as many personal connections as possible . Is he a good coach ,? to me that means W's and winning championships , by good recruiting and coaching . As of today Rocky is the coach . Has a must win game ,the opening game of the OOC . Then MW championship .

Coach Fisher was a one in a thousand opportunity. You can't expect to find someone sitting around with his background and results willing to take over a dead in the water program. Then be willing to stay 10 or 15 years instead of moving on to bigger jobs. Really, one in a thousand at best. I have no idea if Rocky can get us into a CFP bowl game or into the final four or into a P5 conference, he may not be capable of it. However, he did win games at UNM, they have only won 10 games since he left. He was won 25 games in three years. He has a .641 winning percentage, the third highest in school history. He has coached in three straight bowl games and won one conference championship. He has beaten good teams on the road and won games in difficult circumstances when many an Aztec team would have failed. There have been some performances that make you scratch your head, but all in all our trajectory is much better.
