Not knowing anything about the situation, I am proud of SDSU athletics for keeping Tony (and Mark Fisher) employed. Anyone who has ever been sick knows the terror of fearing unemployment and lack of insurance that comes with unemployment. Not that having insurance is a cure, but not being covered is hell. Best wishes to Tony and Mark.

I have absolutely nothing against T. Gwynn. Any opinions on why we cannot compete with Cal Poly, Fullerton, Irvine, etc. in baseball. Have you no decency?

The man is a San Diego Icon and legend, a Hall of Famer. He's fighting for his life and you can't think of anything decent to say here. Simply inexcuseable

I don't wish to be alarmist, but what I'm reading in this thread sounds very grim for Tony. I fear the worst. Tony probably should have stepped aside a year ago, mostly for his own sake. Right now he does not need the stress of running a sports team. AzWm I went to our game at CSUN three years ago and Tony didn't look well then. I just checked to remind myself and we gave up 12 runs that day so there were a lot of visits to the mound to calm down or change pitchers. However, Tony made only one of them himself and on only one other occasion did he get out of the dugout to argue a call and even then, the umpire literally met him halfway. I actually wondered whether just battling traffic to get up to Northridge wasn't difficult for him. Bottom line is the man's present health problems are nothing unique unfortunately.

Nothing unique compared to what/who? None of us know what he's going through right now. We just know that whatever it is is bad enough that he can't coach or do his gig w/ the Pads.

Of course I sympathize with Tony's condition. I watched my father die of lung cancer when I was 35 and I've missed him ever since. I was simply posing a question the answer for which I do not know. I was told to post it elsewhere and that it fine. People are making assumptions about me and my feelings that are not warranted.

One of the all time great Aztecs, not even just in sports...who is more identified with SDSU than Tony Gwynn?
Get better soon Tony, you are the man!

I know what it's like to be really sick so I have all the sympathy in the world for Tony. I had no idea that our present record is the best that we've had in 30 years. It's really sad that Tony can't really enjoy it. I'm sure he can appreciate it, but it's hard to really enjoy something when one is feeling poorly.

Having thoroughly enjoyed those young men in Vegas, win or lose, and having to make the decision to either attend the tournament in Vegas, or my Grand Nephew's high school graduation in Chandler, AZ, (then he's on to ASU), a decision that shouldn't be that difficult really, I feel more for the players than I do Tony. As I fear he's on the clock, I wish him nothing but happiness and contentment for whatever time he has left on this side of the grass. As all we take with us are memories, this man is king. God Bless Him.
