This is such a difficult question considering all the great basketball players we have had in the Aztec family. However, I am going with Al Faux because he was a sniper. I still remember him against Oklahoma State and he could not miss. Also, lefty Randy Holcomb was the first big recruit to sign with SDSU so he gets some love. I remember sitting next to Akbar on a plane from LAX to Dallas and we talked about this same subject. We talked for three hours about Aztec sports and some of the best athletes to step foot on the Mesa.

Kawahi Leonard DJ Gay Chase Tapley Malcolm Thomas Brandon Heath Michael Cage X Thames (rising up the chart) Al Faux Randy Holcolm Jamaal Franklin Myron Epps Billy White (Would have rated him higher but his game reminded me of a person with bipolar... Some days were great days and other days not so great) Tony Bland Tim Shelton

Al Skalecky, Bob Clem, Jack Shawcroft, Noel Mickelsen. Yes, they were all outstanding Aztec basketball players.

This is an easy answer for me, Chase Tapley, without a doubt. I loved his character and team play and felt like he was probably the most balanced player that SDSU has ever had. He pretty much did everything right, IMO, started four years and helped get SDSU into the postseason.

Wow... The list continues to grow every year... Last year I was volunteering for an event at a local Elementary school and saw two six graders playing basketball with each other... One pretended to be X Thames and the other pretended to be chase tapley.... I was very amazed that this kids even knew any of the Aztec players... 16 years ago as a die hard aztec basketball fan it would have been difficlt to name 5 all aztec basketball greats let alone one starter from that roster.... We have come a long way....

Does anybody find it interesting that there has not been one positive mention of Jamaal Franklin (or) Winston Shepard? Winston was our highest ranked recruit until this year and to me he remains a liability. He has made strides this year, but still has a long way to go. Jamaal still has a solid chance of being a good player in the NBA. My piece of advice for him this off-season would be to do anything KL does. Live, learn and love it!

For me my favorite players were Faux and Holcomb, because they were there in the beginning trying to elevate this program from the absolute bottom of the barrel, and they took us to the tournament for the fist time in like 17 years. My next two are Tapley and X as they just play hard and the right way all the time, you just rarely see them make mistakes.
My favorite name: Raymond "Circus" King, I think he played one year before transferring to CAL. My Favorite All-Time Moment: When Ben Wardrop fouled out in just 1:11, still the NCAA record. He came of the bench and did his job.

Couple of different questions in that post get different answers. Evan Burns - McDonalds all American , man would have loved to see what he could have done if he hadn't gotten hurt. By hurt do you mean kicked off the team for not going to class? He did have the potential to be the best Aztec ever, and a star in the NBA. I think he had the most raw talent of any player we've ever had. Without hi-jacking the thread, here are my 3 favorite Aztecs ever: 1. Kawhi 2. Al Faux 3. Brandon Heath

In no particular order:
Kawhi Leonard DJ Gay Brandon Heath Jamaal Franklin Chase Tapley (quickly rising up the ranks) Winston Shepard
I can't believe I'm the first one to list Jamaal as favorite player. He was so fun to watch and his intensity on the court was something you wanted to see out of everyone.
Also, I miss the E-brake.

If you didn't say Ben Wardrop, you're a bandwagon fan.
Only player I can think of who had a night in honor of him while still on the team. Ben Wardrop Night was something I convinced Schnall to do on a $100 budget. Tripled the avg attendance against UCSD.

The no-brainer vote would be Cage or Kawhi for obvious reasons. But if I'm voting with my heart - Tony Bland - and this is why: espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=230780021Aztecs win first postseason game in Division I "The Aztecs (16-13) won for the first time in a Division I postseason game. San Diego State had lost their first five games, including a 93-64 first-round loss to Illinois in last year's NCAA Tournament. Johnson hit his 3-pointer out of the right corner to give the Aztecs a 63-60 lead after they trailed by six points." "San Diego State's Tony Bland forced overtime when he hit a running 10-footer with 1.9 seconds left to tie the game at 54-54. Bland then stole Hull's inbound pass and missed from 23 feet out as his shot hit off the rim at the buzzer." This was a BIG FRIGGIN DEAL at the time that it occurred and that is what started the fun we are experiencing now in the world of Aztecs Basketball. THANK YOU TONY BLAND for getting the WINNING started!!
