Would love to just have a bar within walking distance, that was catered to the college. Walking to Effins and Woodstocks is too much, Trujillo's gets too slammed, 4.0 closes early, and Oggi's is going to be slammed as well. Is there community pushback to having an actual establishment somewhere near the campus or something? I've never gotten it.

There has been beer at monties and louies since I started going there Sports are fun. Be happy Yes...I knew Monty's had beer when I was at SDSU. I thought the rules had changed after that to not allow beer. It sounds like it only impacts NCAA sporting events. that happened in 2006. my freshman year

I see that the powers that be have made smoking a prohibited activity on campus. Does this mean they will have the smoke police on campus? How does a perfectly legal activity, (smoking) suddenly become illegal? So if you want to stroll off between classes to some isolated area on campus to have a smoke you are at risk of being arrested? Went to school when you could go to Monty's Den have a beer and a smoke after class and it was perfectly acceptable. Now you have to check with the NCAA to see if you are allowed to have a beer with an over priced pizza. And don't even think about lighting up that after dinner smoke, because you will wind up with plastic cuffs on your wrists. Anybody know the penalty for smoking outside on campus? It it a misdemeanor punishable by a fine, removal from school, forced to pick up trash on the weekend, a felony that goes on your permanent record? Have thousands of cars everyday on campus that spew polluted exhaust, but you better not smoke because if someone smells your smoke they will get cancer. What a bunch of horse sh^*. Show me one study that confirms that someone got cancer from second hand smoke outside. You could look it up yourself, you know.

When I went to SDSU in the late 60's there were classes in which you could smoke cigarettes (which I did), and even some profs who smoked during lectures. Personally, I'm glad about the current smoking ban.

I think the issue was no beer on campus at NCAA events. Many of us old timers went for pitchers of beer on campus at Monty's Den. I don't recall when and why it closed. Would be nice if Chipotle and The Habit serve beer along with Oggi's. What a great opportunity to showcase San Diego microbrews. as.sdsu.edu/aztec-student-union/content.php?sub=5Ideally they'd stretch their hours past 10pm on game nights to give us somewhere to celebrate rather than sit in a parking lot jam. It was open at least until 2006 (thats when I finished grad school). Of course by then it was called Louies, but still was great. I can't fathom what students (or professors) nowadays do before evening classes, or between morning classes, or after hitting up the arc, or after night classes without a campus pub. Pssh, payback. The entire school was a construction zone in the early 2000's but at least we had a bar. These kids enjoy the benefit of that construction so I'm not shedding a tear for them. // Sent from my GS4 //

My kawai you also have the right to be an uneducated kool-aid drinker. So I am to assume from your reply that you don't drive a car and add zero pollutants to the air everyday. Next you'll want to tell me that Iraq has WMD's

Wow, some how a new student union turns into a smoking policy debate. Used to smoke so I can feel for you Zollner, a beer and a smoke sounds fantastic but your fighting an uphill battle. Smokers are pariahs in CA, you'll get zero sympathy from most people in CA. I really feel for those students that smoke, used to love stepping out of the library for a quick smoke. The e-cigarette business is loving it, ban smoking everywhere.
I personally think CA has way too many regulations. I can't have a drink on the beach, can't walk my dog on the beach, can't have a cigarette on campus ( or anywhere that somebody else might be breathing) , etc. CA is the nanny state, just makes me cherish Las Vegas that much more I guess.

Show me one study that confirms that someone got cancer from second hand smoke outside. I had pretty much the same attitude for some 40 years. Then suddenly my pneumonia allowed my doctor to discover a small cancer mass in my right lung and a spot on my liver. Given my excellent medical treatment by some excellent doctors, the fact that it was discovered early no doubt is a big reason why I'm still on this side of the grass six years later. (That's the new reality of health maintenance verses health care. Constant monitoring of one's health through checkups and physicals. And who knows, maybe even the epidemic of fatso's through out this great nations will be addressed). The bitch of it? I still miss smoking, but I abhor being around it now. Good luck, (as my x-ray technician told me that fateful day).

I also remember those Friday afternoon's at Andy's Saloon. What was it? $.25 pitchers and $.05 mugs? Life was truly good.

Las Vegas is a sh-t hole even with the ridiculous amount of cleaning they do every single morning. It sounds good in theory but have a conversion with an average human and you see why those regulations are needed. // Sent from my GS4 //

Since they passed the no-smoking policy on campus, I've pretty much ignored it and smoke anyway. No repercussions so far.

For us real old timers, the closest, best and cheapest venue for a big pitcher of cold beer was the Two Bit Sandwich Shop. If only it could come back.
