I keep thinking to myself I wonder what the economic value of Jamaal's dunk for the perception of our program from a branding perspective? Considering the dunk almost has 2 million views combined with all of the clips, #1 play on Sportscenter top 10, discussed on PTI, and reposted on several media outlets. This is the type of attention for the program that couldn't be achieved with any type of commercial or advertisement.
Anyone in marketing have any formulas for economic value of such hype?

Just more proof that Men's Basketball rules the roost at San Diego State. I think all athletic program decisions should now be made with Men's Basketball in mind.

Also, I would trade that dunk and all the media exposure it gave us for an Elite Eight appearance. That would do plenty more for us!

It is worth exactly $46,294.12. The teacher inside of me wants me to show your work. I was wondering is there a formula for youtube views?

The oracle thinks that any SDSU fan that enjoys learning the economics of college sports had thought about the value of this dunk.
In the Oracle's opinion, of course JF's dunk does have value. But probably not to the extent some may think. All the dunk does is put a face to a school. This effect is short lived as there will be other dunks in College and Pros that will get their 5 minutes of fame.
The greater value is actually have a ranked team each week as it serves as a constant reminder to the nation who SDSU is. In the Oracle's opinion, the fact that SDSU makes it on ESPN's top 25 scrolling scoreboard at the bottom of TVs and worth many times more than JF's dunk. One can argue that the scrolling scoreboard is worth hundreds of thousands to a university per year.

Let me think this one through...
If Aztec Basketball was an eCommerce site, then the success of the dunk's exposure would be determined by converting the traffic into sales.
We would take the cost of driving the traffic and divide by the number of conversions to determine our cost to acquire the customer.
Aztec Basketball is not selling something, other than letting people know we rock and Jamaal is pretty damn talented, and there is no cost of driving the traffic to know about us via the video clips, which are viral and free.
Therefore, take all economic value of Jamaal's dunk from a eCommerce standpoint and throw it out the window unless we can make it into a product somehow. (Hello Aztec marketing.)
Never fear though, there are people out there who can determine values based upon reach on YouTube, as they were able to determine the economic value of "Gangnam Style" based on YouTube views. I'm not one of them, but can do some research.
Overall, this is taking a life of it's own.
Andy Katz this morning on ESPN College Game Day picked Jamaal as the player to watch and they showed the clip. All of the studio guys (Digger, Jay Williams, etc.) "oooohhhed and ahhhhhed" again. He even joked about "East Coast Bias." This after he complimented the Show as one of the toughest places to play in college basketball.
This dunk is not everything because it has been building for years with our performances, but it is reaffirming our position as a brand overall in the college basketball landscape.
Pretty exciting and something we have all been dreaming about for seemingly forever.

You guys think people like me are too old and you miss the value to recruiting young people who sees Fish lets you play. That turns into more wining and NCAA appearances.
I also believe that opens the door to out of State recruiting.

Just imagine all of the young hot dogs lining up so they can do their thing and not get benched. With the Fisher Filter he can turn that to his advantage.

Alright, I found it. The Jamaal dunk is on YouTube posted by SD Diego. It has 1,533,745 views. For every 1,000 views, YouTube pays $2. Therefore, total revenue for this video right now based on YouTube views is $3,067 to the video poster. The marketing value beyond that is what we are trying to determine, and it is agreed that it is worth so much more than this number, but this is at least some economic number to add into the discussion. nymag.com/news/intelligencer/topic/gangnam-style-profits-2012-12/

believe the J-"Dunk' does help the Aztecs recruiting. SDSU is noted for being a team that stresses Defense. That J-Dunk, will be watched by a lot of high school guys that want to use their skills and play an up tempo style. Action speaks louder then a lots words, Aztecs couldn't get any better promo then the J-Dunk. Jay Bilas for Director of the South West BE conference , along with a major contract with ESPN

I think it has HUGE value. If im a recruit and I see the dunk on sportscenter... Im like "dayyuummmm!!! yo check out that dunk, its like street ball YO! Coach Fish knows whats up. I want to play for a coach like that." Bottom line is I think it was huge for recruiting. Better recruits = a higher end program which = more tourney wins which = a G5 airplane and lots and lots of $$$
